Manuscript - Notes on Cholera Treatment of Early Hydrotherapy - Onset of 2nd Pandemic
[England], September 1848. Manuscript notes on the treatment of cholera by R. Baikie, former surgeon in the Madras Medical Service, made during the second cholera pandemic, and transcribed by an unknown nineteenth century hand. 8vo. Double leaf measuring 11 x 18 cm, watermarked with the year 1848. Very good condition. Written during the second cholera pandemic,which erupted in 1839 and persisted until 1856, and at the onset of the outbreak in London, British physician Dr. Baikie's notes examine early hydrotherapy treatments by Vincenz Priessnitz and Heinrich Friedrich Francke, leaders in the study and cure of the disease in the mid-1800s. Most interestingly, the cures prescribed here are partly accurate and partly opposite to what science have since discovered to be effective. For example,while continued eating aids in the speed of recovery of normal intestinal function, herein the experts suggest eating as little as possible. However, continuous hydration with fluid intake was also prescribed, and remains a paramount part of treatment today. [Robert Baikie, MD, was a military surgeon with the Thirty-sixth Native Infantry in Madras, retiring from service in 1844.] Indeed, as Baikie predicts, in 1849, a second major outbreak spread across Europe. In London, it was the worst outbreak in the city's history, claiming 14,137 lives, over twice as many as the 1832 outbreak, and also claiming 5,308 lives in the major port city of Liverpool. Excerpts from the letter: "It will doubtless at this time, when cholera appears to be rapidly approaching, be both interesting & useful to know how the disease was treated by the celebrated Priessnitz of Graefenberg, during the last epidemic of 1832-33, when, as stated from good authority he had from 30-40 cases brought to him , & did not lose one. The subjoined was taken down from his own lips by a German friend who communicated it to me..." "[from Priessnitz]... In light cases it was found sufficient to use sitting baths at 59 degrees continued in some cases so long as two hours, with uninterrupted friction of the abdomen & extremities, plentiful drinking of cold water, & thereafter 1 or 2 clysters... In several cases where cramps... paralysis had already come on, the patient was put into a half bath... rubbed while every part of the body attained natural warmth... several hours... then packed in a wet sheet till gentle perspiration came on... frequent enemata of cold water, & sitting baths... according as severe pain in the belly or cramps in the bowels occurred... The after cure consisted of repeated wet packing, 2 long side baths daily, 2 enemata daily, & compress round the body. The patient to eat as little as possible... light white bread & cold water being the best diet." [end] "... The mode of treatment recommended by his celebrated scholar Francke (Rausse)... used the sitting baths & shallow baths at a temperature of 65 degrees to 68 degrees & not more than 20 minutes... Instead of the wet packing, he put the patient to bed, & covered him up warm... washed in a half bath, or if very weak, gently washed down in bed..." "The case above described, which occurred just after M. Franke's melancholy death, was treated on his principles by his pupil & assistant M. Halin." End Excerpts. Vincenz Priessnitz, also written Prießnitz (1799-1851) was a peasant farmer in Gräfenberg, Austrian Silesia, who is generally considered the founder of modern hydrotherapy, which is used in alternative and orthodox medicine. Priessnitz stressed remedies such as suitable food, air, exercise, rest and water, over conventional medicine. Priessnitz gave water treatments to patients of the Great Cholera Pandemic of 1832. Heinrich Friedrich Francke (1805-1848) (Pseudonym: J. H. Rausse) was an expert in hydrotherapy, and wrote several papers on the subject beginning in 1839. His enthusiasm for the treatment method came after a water cure with Priessnitz in Gräfenberg, 1838. Francke subsequently opened his own cold water treatment facilities. Manuscript

[...] nos vies sont bien occupées et j'ai peur qu'elles ne se rencontrent pas souvent! [...] J'espere être en Bretagne par la fin de l'été [...]" (4 June). - With slight paper flaws and traces of mounting.

This American artist was an illustrator for "Harper's Weekly" and other publications and also illustrated many books but is best known for drawings and painting of American and European street scenes -- cityscapes buildings. Signed leaflet heavy buff stock 6" X 9" 4pp n.p. n.y. Fine. Reproduction of Bailey's lithograph of St. Paul's Chapel with printed caption beneath "Columbia University / in the City of New York / on the / New York Central." Just below the image the artist boldly inscribes "To Arnold Gates" and signs in full in black ink. Inner pages 2 and 3 blank and fourth page features two columns of text about Columbia University front and rear pages thus display nicely side by side. No publisher or year noted but likely of 1930s vintage and presumably a New York Central marketing piece. Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 became a noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. unknown

Good content concerning this stamp reading in part: "One might safely say that the concept and substance of the stamp was a case of design by committee; that it had something to say however is gratifying in the way you are using graphic materials to illuminate American history. 12mo, oblong 12mo, and visiting card format. Altogether 10 pp. Two of the letters, the lettercard, and the visiting card are addressed to a Madame Emond and her husband. The lettercard, accepting an invitation, is the earliest dated item in the collection (1 May 1897). In a letter to M. Emond, dated 21 July 1906, Baillet declines an invitation, as he is performing in Augier's "Les Effrontés". In an undated letter to Mme. Emond, Baillet similarly declines an inviation for the same reason, also commenting the health of M. Dubuisson: "Vous êtes mille fois aimable de vouloir bien songer à moi : hélas ! je joue Vendredi - je joue toujours en ce moment - et il ne m'est pas possible de profiter de votre charmante invitation. Les meilleures nouvelles de la santé de Monsieur Dubuisson me font grand plaisir et j'espère avec vous son promt [!] et complet rétablissement". The visiting card was written to thank M. Emond in an unspecified matter. - On 24 January 1899, Baillet writes a somewhat cryptic letter concerning a talisman, with a quotation from Hugo's Ruy Blas: "Voici le talisman ! Votre fidèle serviteur va s'écrier comme Ruy Blas: 'Donc, je marche vivant dans mon rêve étoile!' - Quand il vous plaira lui donner cette joie ... n'hésitez pas". - Finally, on 26 November 1899, Bataille declines an invitation due to a soirée and sends greetings to a Mme. Weill. - Georges Baillet was named Sociétaire of the Comédie-Française in 1887. One of his favourite roles was that of César de Bazan in Ruy Blas. - Lettercard shows minor foxing. Letter dated 26 November 1899 somewhat stained.

To the Polish pianist Antoine de Kontski, thanking him for tickets to a concert of the brothers Kontski but declining the invitation due to scheduling conflicts: "J'ai reçu hier la lettre que Monsieur de Kontsky m'a fait l'honneur de m'écrire le 7. du Ct. en m'addressant des billets pour le concert qu'il doit donner ce soir; Je le prie de m'agréer tout mes remerciements; il m'aurait été bien agréable d'aller l'entendre ainsi que Messieurs ses frères, mais je ne suis point libre aujourd'hui; je ne pourrais donc profiter de son aimable prévenance, Je lui en exprime tous mes regrets sincères et je saisirai la plus favorable occasion de m'en dédomager [!] en allant applaudir à ses talens [...]". - Originating from Kraków, the family of Antoine de Kontski had moved to Paris in 1836. The eldest brother Karol (1815-67) was a violinist, later joining the orchestra of the Opéra comique. Stanislaw (b. 1820) was a pianist, while the youngest, Apollinaire (1825-79), was an internationally acclaimed virtuoso violonist and composer who had studied under Paganini and later became the first director of the Warsaw Institute of Music. - One of the foremost violinists of his time, Pierre Baillot is today best remembered as a violin teacher. Together with Pierre Rode and Rodolphe Kreutzer he co-authored the highly influential official violin method for the Paris conservatory. Baillot is considered the last distinguished representative of the great classical school of violin playing in Paris. In his instructional "L'Art du violon" (1834) he acknowledges the transition to the virtuoso style of interpretation, most famously embodied by Niccolò Paganini, and characterizes the specific differences in style and technique. Antoine and Apollinaire de Kontski, the most successful of the brothers, were famous for their virtuoso style, though sometimes criticized for their showmanship. - Well preserved. Traces of former mounting and minor browning to the upper border.

ALS 1p 8½" X 11" Columbus OH 1944 March 28. Addressed to J. Robert Van Pelt of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Near fine. Smudge at upper right corner not affecting text. On letterhead of "Battelle Memorial Institute" Bain arranges a date "to meet with the Chicago section once more. In these war times it is not always possible to keep appointments made so far ahead. As for title for the talk how would this do 'The Place of Philippine Mines in the Far Eastern Future' or 'Ores and Industry in the Philippines' or 'One Mining Man's experiences in the Philippines in War time'." Bold and attractive. It was while in the Philippines that Bain died. A handsome example. unknown

John Gilbert Baker served as the keeper of the herbarium of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, from 1890 to 1899, while Beck was head of the Botanical Department in the K. K. Hofkabinett, now the Natural History Museum, from 1885 to 1899. - Very lightly stained.

TNS 1p 8" X 10¼" Washington DC 30 April 1920. Addressed to Joseph Cummings Chase 1891-1954. Very good. Lightly age toned with original folds. On "War Department" letterhead Baker thanks this noted artist for "the copy of 'Soldiers All' and keenly appreciate your kindness in sending it to me. It is a book which I shall treasure very highly and there will be many happy days when I shall refer to it and recall the friendships and stirring efforts of those whom you have so happily preserved for us." Boldly signed with his usual diminutive signature. Chase had been commissioned by the A.E.F. to paint portraits of commanding generals and hero doughboys and these were published in the 1920 book "Soldiers All: Portraits and Sketches of the Men of the A.E.F." Schönes ganzfigürliches Rollenphoto als Scarpia in Puccinis ‘Tosca’ aus dem Hause Willinger im Verlag Leiser, Berlin. - Nach seinem Bühnendebüt in Kiew 1903 sang der in Petersburg geborene Bariton in den Uraufführungen von Rachmaninows ‘Der geizige Ritter’ und ‘Francesca da Rimini’ (beide 1906) am Moskauer Bolschoi-Theater. Gastspiele führten ihn nach 1910 häufig nach Westeuropa und in die USA, deren Staatsbürgerschaft er 1917 annahm. Seit 1912 als ständiger Gast am Stadttheater Basel und der Stadt auch über seine berufliche Betätigung hinaus verbunden, lebte Baklanoff von 1932 bis zu seinem Tod in Basel. “Er hatte eine besonders schöne Baritonstimme mit großem Stimmumfang, der es ihm erlaubte, verschiedenartige Opernpartien zu interpretieren. Sein dramatisches Spiel fesselte die Zuhörer [...]” (MGG XV, 426).

Even tomorrow I will not be able to see you, as I want to take advantage of an extraordinary opportunity to write to Russia. But the day after tomorrow I certainly want to see your home. Your unchanged, albeit older M. Bakunin" (transl.). - The aristocratic Russian anarchist, a figurehead of permanent revolution, had escaped from Siberia to Japan in 1861, made his way from there to San Francisco, and then to London, where he began to renew his associations in revolutionary circles. A compelling if somewhat intemperate figure, Bakunin loathed Karl Marx and vigorously challenged his authority. This enmity led to Bakunin's expulsion from the International in 1872.

8vo. 2½ pp. on bifolium. In Russian. To a lady friend, concerning the publication of two of his romances with the Italian music publisher Casa Ricordi. Balakirev found it difficult formally to grant the publication rights to Ricordi, as they had previously been granted to the famous Russian publisher Fyodor Stellovsky "for all countries". However, as there was "no literary or musical agreement between Russia and Western European countries", so that "Russian publishers republish whatever they find advantageous", he assumed "that Ricordi can also publish Russian romances without asking for the rights" - also considering that he has seen "some of my romances published in Germany with Russian and German lyrics without my permission". - Balakirev made important contributions to the development of Russian classical music and the Russian romance genre, continuing the pioneering work of Mikhail Glinka. Together with César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakow, and Alexander Borodin, Balakirev formed the group of The Five in St Petersburg that collaborated to create a distinct national style of music. Although the group only existed from 1856 to 1870, it had enormous influence on the following generation of Russian composers. In Western Europe, the symbolist composers Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy adopted their radical tonal language. - With rust-stains from a paperclip affecting the address. Traces of folds.
