ill., br. È noto a molti che il 16 dicembre del 1945 a Napoli si disputa la Coppa Mergellina, la prima corsa automobilistica italiana del secondo dopoguerra. È invece un piccolo drappello di appassionati a sapere che il 3 marzo del 1946, sempre in territorio campano, ha luogo la seconda corsa, la cronoscalata Atrani-Ravello. A partire da queste due date, il volume Corse sotto il Vesuvio offre una mappa dettagliata delle competizioni di autovetture svolte in Campania fino agli anni Sessanta. Sono tutte gare su percorsi stradali, in circuito, in salita e di regolarità, dove ai campioni più affermati come Ascari, Farina, Fangio, Moss si affiancano i piloti locali meno noti al grande pubblico come ad esempio Ruggiero, Sorrentino, Fiordelisi, Moselli. Analogamente alle case automobilistiche immortali quali Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo si affiancano artigiani locali tra cui Paganelli, i fratelli Esposito, Monaci. Poco prima degli anni Settanta il ciclo di competizioni comincia a spegnersi progressivamente. Con le limitazioni dovute alla questione della sicurezza, i percorsi stradali non risultano più adatti allo scopo. Piloti e appassionati saranno costretti ad allontanarsi sempre di più dal Vesuvio e gli artigiani scompariranno definitivamente. Con l'aiuto di oltre 600 scatti di Riccardo Carbone, leggendario fotografo napoletano, Massimo Nobile racconta gli anni d'oro delle corse campane, mettendo in risalto, oltre agli attori anche i più sconosciuti, gli scenari magnifici dove queste si svolgevano, immagini che rimarranno un unicum nel panorama dell'automobilismo sportivo italiano.
