Il suo sogno è andare negli Stati Uniti, anche se non ha ancora chiara la sua vocazione per il cinema. Questa comincia a mostrarsi quando Billie si trasferisce da Vienna a Berlino: e mentre continua a occuparsi di jazz e spettacoli di varietà, inizia la sua carriera di sceneggiatore per il film "Uomini di domenica", di cui racconta l'avventurosa realizzazione. I testi raccolti in questo volume sono una testimonianza della versatilità del giovane Wilder: reportage non convenzionali (Venezia, Genova e Monte Carlo), brevi racconti surreali e satirici, paradossi, provocazioni, recensioni cinematografiche e teatrali, inchieste sul mercato editoriale, interviste a dive del muto come Asta Nielsen ma anche a ballerine, fattucchiere e venditrici di giornali. Spesso Wilder parla in prima persona, come quando racconta la sua faticosa ed esilarante esperienza di ballerino a pagamento in un hotel di Vienna. Ha legato indissolubilmente la propria fama cinematografica a quella di Mel Brooks e dal loro sodalizio Wilder ha guadagnato ben due nomination all'Oscar. Memorabili anche le sue collaborazioni artistiche con Woody Allen e Richard Pryor. È stato sposato con la comica Gilda Radner (una delle protagoniste del mitico show tv Saturday Night Live) dal 1984 fino alla sua prematura scomparsa avvenuta nel 1989 per un cancro alle ovaie. Da allora, Wilder è un attivo testimonial della lotta al cancro. Oggi vive con la moglie Karen a Stamford nel Connecticut e si dedica alla scrittura. Questa sua autobiografia è preceduta da una prefazione di Mel Brooks.
