La spada che dona la vita (Heiho kadensho, letteralmente "Il libro della nostra tradizione sull'arte della guerra"), il trattato composto da Yagyu Munenori nel 1632 o poco dopo, offre una visione dell'arte della scherma rinnovata dalla temperie storica del Giappone pacificato del periodo Edo: la spada non è più solamente uno strumento di morte e distruzione, ma è dispensatrice di vita. Ponendosi a cavallo tra l'astratta filosofia del Fudochishinmyoroku di Takuan Soho e l'approccio pratico del Gorin no sho ("Il libro dei cinque anelli") di Miyamoto Musashi, l' Heiho kadensho contempera teoria e tecnica. Senza fare ricorso a motivazioni soprannaturali ma rimanendo sempre ancorato a quelle razionali e psicologiche, spiega l'arte del combattimento e illustra le idee, di chiara ispirazione zen, sottese alla Via della spada, fino al metodo cruciale della Non spada. Quello indicato da Munenori è soprattutto un percorso iniziatico per il praticante: trascendendo la tecnica dopo averla padroneggiata, facendola diventare tutt'uno con la propria natura, egli potrà infatti accedere al mushin, la nonmente, e diventerà non solo abilissimo nel mestiere delle armi, ma anche e soprattutto un uomo completo.
