Autograph letter signed from the agent of the New York Iron Bridge Co. to George W. Strong of Rutland Vermont who was involved with the Rutland and Washington Railroad Company
New York 1850. Very good overall. An interesting letter detailing the negotiation over wooden vs. iron railroad bridges. In this letter addressed to Strong M. M. White agent of the New York Iron Bridge Co. seeking to persuade the Vermont railroad to eschew a wooden bridge and setting out advantageous terms for purchasing an iron bridge.<br /> <br /> Strong was "liable as endorser on paper for the Rutland and Washington Railroad Company which subsequently failed to an amount considerable exceeding all his property." He was sued in the Supreme Court of Vermont lter in the 1850s and looks to have been bankrupted losing his real estate marble quarry share etc. See "Reports of Cases Argued and Determined in the Supreme Court of Vermont vol. 42 Montpelier Vt 1870 by Wheelock Veazey a Vermont Civil War hero.<br /> <br /> Letter written on blue laid paper 4pp 8 x 10 1/4"written on 1pp docketed on the verso with period folds. Niagara Falls 1938 Bridge Collapse Before and After Photo Archive of Structural Damage and Ice Floes Leading to the Failure
1938. Natural DisastersEngineering Niagara Falls bridge collapse photo archive documenting the failure of the Honeymoon Bridge during the catastrophic ice jam of January 1938 one of the most dramatic engineering failures in the history of the Niagara frontier. Built in 1898 as the Upper Steel Arch Bridge and renamed the Honeymoon Bridge in 1937 the structure connected Niagara Falls New York and Niagara Falls Ontario carrying tourists automobiles and cross-border traffic directly beside the falls. During the severe winter of 1938 massive accumulations of ice in the Niagara River created extraordinary pressure against the bridge's steel arch and supports. On January 27 1938 after days of strain and closure to traffic the bridge collapsed into the frozen river below. The destruction ended forty years of continuous operation at one of the most heavily visited tourist and transportation corridors in North America and directly led to construction of the Rainbow Bridge completed in 1941. The archive captures both the frozen landscape that preceded the disaster and the immediate aftermath including crowds gathered along the edge of the falls observing the twisted remains of the bridge lodged in the ice.<br /> <br /> Photo archive of 13 black and white silver gelatin photographs approximately 3"x5" to 3 x 4.5 inches Niagara Falls New York and Ontario circa January-February 1938. Images show the Horseshoe Falls and American Falls almost entirely surrounded by ice formations with enormous frozen shelves extending across the river basin and dense accumulations of icicles hanging from the cliff faces beside pedestrian overlooks. Several scenes show groups of bundled spectators standing near railings at the edge of the falls while the collapsed steel arch of the Honeymoon Bridge lies broken and partially submerged downstream. Two photographs focus closely on the twisted central truss section bent sharply downward into the ice-choked river while another wider view shows the destroyed span framed directly beside the falls emphasizing the scale of the collapse relative to the landscape. Additional views depict the intact approach structures before failure heavy ice movement beneath the bridge and broad panoramas of the frozen gorge crowded with drifting ice masses. Four photos unmarked appear to show the icy conditions preceding the collapse while the remaining nine stamped "Feb 10 1938" show the aftermath of the disaster.<br /> <br /> The collapse exposed the fatal weakness of the Honeymoon Bridge's low placement in the gorge where winter ice could press directly against its abutments. Authorities closed the bridge before the final collapse and workers escaped before the steel arch failed resulting in a dramatic but ultimately non-deadly engineering failure. The Rainbow Bridge opened in 1941 about 500 feet from the old site with higher clearance and a design better suited to ice and flood pressure. The event permanently altered the architectural and transportation structure of Niagara Falls with projects designed around ice floes as a primary structural threat not a seasonal inconvenience. Johannes Orth January 14 1847 - January 13 1923 Was A German Pathologist Who Was A Native Of Wallmerod. He Studied Medicine At The University Of Bonn Earning His Doctorate In 1872. Afterwards He Became An Assistant To Rudolf Virchow 1821-1902 In Berlin. In 1878 He Became A Professor At The University Of Göttingen And In 1902 Returned To Berlin As Director Of The Pathology Clinic Following The Death Of Virchow. Orth Specialized In The Pathological Study Of Infectious Diseases Particularly Tuberculosis And Endocarditis. In 1875 He Documented An Account Involving An Autopsy Of A Jaundiced Infant With Intense Yellow Staining Of The Basal Ganglia Hippocampus The Third Ventricle As Well As Parts Of The Cerebellum. However It Wouldn't Be Until The Early 20Th Century That This Condition Would Be Further Comprehended. In 1903 Pathologist Christian Georg Schmorl 1861-1932 Presented The Results Of 120 Autopsies Of Jaundiced Infants With Six Of These Cases Having The Staining Phenomena Described By Orth. Schmorl Coined The Term Kernicterus Jaundice Of The Basal Ganglia For This Yellow Staining Phenomenon. This Information Is Based On A Translation Of An Article From The German Wikipedia. Publisher's Half Morocco Over Pebbled Cloth Quite Worn At Edges Hinges Solid Gilt Lettering Bright And Complete. Ownership Stamp Of Dr. Norman Bridge On Title; Dr. Bridge Originally From Chicago Was A Principal Shareholder In The Mexican Petroleum Company Along With E. L. Doheny And C. A. Mainly from London and Westminster. Dating from between 1855 and 1907. The notable London firm of P. S. King & Son 'Publishers Parliamentary and General Booksellers Bookbinders and Printers' was in existence for more than a hundred years having been established according to its own account in Parliament Street in 1819 and still active until 1941 when it became P. S. King and Staples under which name it traded for around six years. An advertisement for the Staples Press Limited in The Times 14 February 1946 lists among incorporated companies: 'P. S. King and Staples Limited Publishers Parliamentary and General Booksellers Publishers to the London. County. Council. and Iinterational. Labour. Organisation. Printing and Bookbinding Westminster. Founded 1819.' The present collection mainly consisting of correspondence addressed to the founder Philip Stephen King himself is in fair condition aged and with occasional damp staining affecting in particular half a dozen items. Among the 36 items in the collection are signed autograph letters and notes almost all in 12mo from 26 individuals among them: Sir Charles Bowyer Adderley: on letterhead of Hams Hall Minworth Birmingham no date; 'H. B.': on letterhead of the House of Commons Library 7 January 1881; Edward Baines: 32 St Mary's Road Canonbury 25 January 1860; John Aloysius Blake MP for Waterford: Waterford 14 October 1859 listing addresses and making an addition for an entry in a biographical publication; Thomas F. Brady: on letterhead of the Office of Irish Fisheries 12 April 1873; Sir Edward Cholmley Dering: Pluckley 5 September no year 'I have left orders for my journals and Parliamentary papers to be packed and sent to you: Try and sell the former and if not I suppose you must take them as waste at 25/ per cwt but as they are complete I shall hope you will be able to dispose of them to advantage'; T. de Cavalier de Cuverville 'Capitaine de Vaisseau Commandant le Trident': calling card with autograph note in French addressed from Brest 29 December 1880; Charles Louis Léon Dufresne de la Chauvinière French Naval Attache: postcard in English from 12 Wilton Place postmarked 27 January 1881; Ashurst Turner Gilbert 'A. Also 3 Typed Letters Signed from Lord Knollys on letterheads of Windsor Castle Sandringham and H.M. Yacht Victoria and Albert 1904 and 1907 acknowledging presentations of material to King George V all three damp-damaged. Among the other items is the King's own extraction of the printed 'Autograph and MSS. Section Including the Collection of First Numbers of Newspapers and Magazines etc. of Mr. P. S. King' from the printed catalogue of the Crystal Palace Exhibition pp.128-249 marked up in manuscript and with the pink printed wraps of the catalogue. Heavily damp damaged and with an manuscript letter also damaged signed by Henry Gillman General Manager of the Crystal Palace Company on letterhead 13 November 1897 informing King of the return of his manuscripts to Brighton. On the reverse of Gillman's letter King has transcribed a report of the exhibition of his collection from the Journal of the Society of Archivists and Autograph Collectors August 1897.
