‎Rundbrief: "Sehr geehrter Herr Kollege! Angesichts der nahenden Weihnachtsferien erlaube ich mir Sie darauf aufmerksam zu machen, dass der Termin für die Ablieferung der Manuskripte für die II. Auflage des Handbuches der Geburtshilfe Ostern 1923 gedacht ist. Das Buch ist mit Ausnahme des 3. Bandes vollkommen vergriffen und der Verleger legt den grössten Wert darauf, dass es so bald wie möglich neu gedruckt wird, da der Druck des umfangreichen Werkes ja geraume Zeit in Anspruch nimmt. Ich wiederhole deshalb meine Bitte, den Termin Ostern beizubehalten, da der Verleger es auch als dringend notwendig bezeichnet, dass diesmal alle 3 Bände zusammen in Angriff genommen werden, um gleichzeitig erscheinen zu können, was natürlich für den Absatz des Buches von grösstem Wert wäre. Bei den hohen Kosten wären wir nun weiterhin sehr verbunden, wenn es Ihnen möglich wäre Ihr Kapitel etwas zu kürzen, ohne dass natürlich darunter der Charakter der Arbeit gemäss dem Zwecke eines Handbuches irgendwie beeinträchtigt würde. Erfahrungsgemäss lässt sich ja bei einer gedruckt vorliegenden Arbeit der Inhalt viel leichter übersehen als im Manuskript, und wenn Sie bei der Durchsicht Ihres Teiles Streichungen für möglich halten, so würde dies dem Ganzen zum Vorteil gereichen. Sehr verbunden wäre ich Ihnen, wenn Sie mir vielleicht durch Postkarte ganz kurz mitteilen würden, ob ich auf Lieferung Ihres Teiles an Ostern mit Sicherheit rechnen kann." Bald mehr." - Döderlein lehrte 1907-34 als Nachfolger F. von Winckels in München, wo er 1916 die Klinik in der Maistraße gründete. "[...] Da die Preußische Regierung mich zu den Todten geworfen hat und alle meine Versuche zur akademischen Wirksamkeit, die mein eigentlicher Beruf, zurückzukehren, an ihrer Hartnäckigkeit gescheitert, so lebe ich noch immer in Köln, wohin ich im Jahre 1846 bei völliger Aussichtslosigkeit an der rheinischen Universität befördert zu werden, zurückgekehrt bin. Daher kam Ihre so höchst willkommene Sendung mir erst so spät in die Hände [...] Ihre Ausführungen über Goethes christliches Trauerspiel, über das ich kurz im Weimarer Sonntagsblatt gesprochen, war mir höchst angenehm. Wegen des Elpenor muss ich gestehen Bedenken zu tragen; er scheint mir wirklich rein erfunden. Lehrreich ist, was Sie über den Triumph der Empfindsamkeit beigebracht haben. Über Stella muß ich die in meinen Erklärungen zu Goethe (Heft VIII) entwickelte Ansicht für die einzig richtige und dazu für die Beurteilung Goethes, höchst bedeutend halten. Eine erfreuliche Bereicherung war mir Ihre Nachweisung von Goethes Beziehungen zum sächsischen Erzgebirge. Solche eingehende Studien, wie Sie Goethe zugewandt haben, sind nöthig, um den ins Unendliche gehenden Stoff zu einem gewissen Abschluss zu bringen. Gäbe es nur in unserem lieben Deutschland einen Goetheverein, der ähnlich wie die englischen Shakespearegesellschaften für Förderung unserer Kenntnis des Dichters sorgte. Der Schillerverein sollte in dieser Beziehung für Schiller und seinen großen Freund eintreten, damit Kundige und Befähigte sich zusammenthun und sich planmäßig dieser großen Aufgabe widmen könnten. Aber daran ist wohl kaum zu denken. Bei uns muß jeder auf eigene Hand thun, und sehn was ihn gelingen mag, aber zugleich wohl gefasst sein, daß Halb- oder Unkunde sein mühsam gewonnenes reifes Ergebnis verspotten und mit windigen Gründen in die Luft zu sprengen sich anschickt [...] Auf sich selbst und seine eigene Kraft zu sehn, dazu hat mich unser Meister angeleitet, als dessen herrlichste Offenbarung ich das Wort verehre: 'Edel sei der Mensch, hilfreich und gut!' [...]" - II. "[...] Einen so kundigen und warmen Verehrer Goethes zu begrüssen kann mir nur höchst erwünscht sein und sehe ich diesem Augenblick mit Verlangen entgegen. Ihre Ansicht über Elpenor will ich nach einiger Zeit noch einmal in ihrer ganzen Ausführung auf mich wirken lassen; bis jetzt kann ich noch immer nicht zustimmen, sondern glaube, daß Goethe wirklich den Stoff im Gegensatz zu Iphigenie erfunden. Den von Ihnen bemerkten Irrthum in Betreff der Goethe'schen Iphigenie habe ich schon in meiner Schrift 'Schiller und Goethe' zurückgenommen [...] Wie kam aber auch Frau von Gleichen zu diesem Herausgeber? Mit den Nachkommen unseres großen Dichters steht es etwas wunderlich. Das Werk über Sulpiz Boisserée hat mir Veranlassung zu einem Artikel 'Goethe und Sulpiz Boisserée' gegeben, den ich für das Morgenblatt bestimmt habe. Meine Behauptung über Anna Sibylle Münch habe ich in einem Artikel für die Blätter für litterarische Unterhaltung gegen Viehoffs unbefugte Verdächtigung verteidigt [...] Einen Aufsatz über Bessers Familie und Goethes Werther bestimme ich für das Bremer Sonntagsblatt [...]"‎

Les tablettes de cire etaient utilisees quotidiennement comme brouillon par les comptables royaux au XIIIe et XIVe siecle. The Banquet of the Pheasant was a response to the Fall of Constantinople, and it was staged to enlist support for the coming crusade. Two splendid tributes to heroic crusaders from the duke's family tree, commissioned in the 1450s, provide an opportunity to bring these elements of his reputation - bibliophile and would-be crusader--under the same lens. Our perception of the Charlemagne Chronicle in Brussels (BR, MS 9066-68) and the Jerusalem Chronicle in Vienna (ONB, Cod. 2533) is enhanced when we consider other examples of "crusade literature" and remember the perennial goal of recovering Jerusalem. This study of the visual and literary projects that supported Philip's efforts to launch a crusade, long after the days of the "classic" crusades, sets these manuscripts in the context of his court's interest in history writing and updated historical romances, and against the background of the French crusading tradition and the Burgundian incarnation that succeeded it. Since research on text, language, and manuscript may be impeded by editorial policies operative in older editions of medieval narratives and since viewing the manuscripts directly is often difficult or impossible, the editorial board set protocols for the Lancelot Prose of 229 editions that would address the need for authentic, accessible texts, packaged with ancillaries to address a variety of reading and experience levels. At the same time, the board wished to take into account the potential of electronic images to enhance scholarly work and teaching based on the editions. The idea of a strictly 'diplomatic edition' was discarded in light of digital technology's ability to provide high-resolution images of an original that are useful for close private study and public viewing. Thus each edition provides a useful, portable, authentic reading of Old French Arthurian narrative that is supported externally by online electronic images and internally by a selection of wonderful illustrations and a variety of ancillary materials and essays developed through years of study and teaching based on Yale 229. The Mort begins with the return of Bohors from the quest of the Holy Grail and narrates the declining fortunes of King Arthur and his Round Table through the dissolution of the Table and the 'death' of Arthur. The tale includes Morgain's efforts to convince Arthur of Lancelot and Guinevere's adultery, Lancelot's battle to save Guinevere from burning at the stake, the dramatic discovery of Guinevere and Lancelot by Arthur's knights, the departure of Arthur from his kingdom to fight Lancelot, and Arthur's leaving his Kingdom, the keys to his treasury, and his Queen in the hands of the treacherous Mordret. In the closing folios, Arthur is mortally wounded by Mordret at the apocalyptic Battle of Salisbury Plain, and Lancelot returns to avenge Arthur against Mordret's two sons at the final Battle of Winchester. The book closes shortly after the death of Lancelot, with a rejection of the life of court and chivalry in favor of penance and spiritual fulfillment. Languages: English, French.‎

Le premier (Lectio philosophorum, Amsterdam, 1973) etait centre sur l'Ecole de Chartres, le second (Etudes erigeniennes, Paris, 1987; Prix Victor Cousin, 1990) sur Jean Scot Erigene. Ce troisieme recueil combine les deux themes. Les travaux qui y sont rassembles, et qui couvrent plus de vingt annees de recherches, portent non seulement sur Jean Scot et sur les maitres chartrains, mais sur leurs sources bibliques, patristiques et profanes. In the closing folios, Arthur is mortally wounded by Mordret at the apocalyptic Battle of Salisbury Plain, and Lancelot returns to avenge Arthur against Mordret's two sons at the final Battle of Winchester.
