‎Anselm and Abelard offers a wide-ranging collection of papers on two of the most well-known medieval thinkers, Anselm of Canterbury and Peter Abelard. Drawn from a conference held in Stuttgart in 2004, the sixteen papers by leading scholars in the field focus on the lives and thought of these two thinkers. The majority of the contributions expore the intellectual world of the medieval west in the century between the mid-eleventh and the mid-twelfth, a period crucial in forming intellectual frameworks that would shape subsequent western thought. The first eight papers focus on Anselm, the second eight on comparisons and contrasts with Abelard. All of Anselm's and most of Abelard's major works are examined in the course of the collection. Contributors explore key philosophical themes of thruth, original sin, logic, reason. Others tease out the often intricate networks between intellectual communities in the period to reveal fresh insights into the development of both Anselm and Abelard's thought. This includes consideration of the physical way in which Anselm's corpus was collected and preserved. Connections between literary artifice and theological observation are investigated, as are Anselm's notion of gift and western intellectual attitudes towards Jewish and Islamic thought. Outside the mid-twelfth century the use made of Anselm's thought and historical existence by thirteenth century scholars and by the post-reformation Church in england are also considered. This is an important and thought-provoking collection, which shows the continuing inspiration to be drawn from both Anselm and Abelard as well as providing a thorough investigation of the contexts in which their thought developed, evolved, was expressed ans was understood by contemporaries and subsequent generations. ‎Palimpsests are texts from which the primary text has been effaced to make room for fresh writing. The practice was particularly important in the early Middle Ages, when numerous, often precious, books were subjected to this treatment. As a result, many ancient texts lay hidden in European libraries for centuries. Ever since the first palimpsests were discovered in the seventeenth century, scholars have been fascinated by the possibility of discovering hitherto unknown texts. For a long time, the lower script of palimpsests could only be brought back to the light of day through the use of chemical reagents that proved very detrimental to the manuscripts. The great advance away from these destructive techniques came at the beginning of the twentieth century with the application of ultra-violet photography. Today, striking advances in this field are again being made with the development of digital imaging. The contributions in this volume focus mainly on the cultural evidence offered by palimpsests from the early Middle Ages. Some contributors have examined particular manuscripts in great detail (the London palimpsest of Jerome's Chronicle or the Munich palimpsest codex from Benediktbeuern); others have looked at specific types of texts that have suffered deletion in this way (liturgical palimpsests, Carolingian letters). ‎The Sermones ad populum are a part of Augustine's work that, especially in its relation to the rest of the Augustinian corpus, deserves more attention. Frequently studied topics are the transmission of the sermons, the bishop's homiletic methodology, his use of Scripture and classical rhetoric, his view on the episcopate, his theology of proclamation and his opinions about the cult of the martyrs. Augustine's sermons also serve as an invaluable source for the study of the North African Church and its liturgical practices at the end of the fourth and the beginning of the fifth century. The dating and the chronology of the sermons have likewise been the object of many publications. As a matter of fact, they are still much debated. On May 29-31, 2008, the research units History of Church and Theology and Literary Studies: Latin Literature of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven organized an international conference on Augustine's Sermones ad populum in collaboration with the Scientific Committee of the Series Latina of Corpus Christianorum (Brepols Publishers), the Revue benedictine (Maredsous) and the Augustinian Historical Institute (Heverlee). ‎Général Gabriel de Chamberet – Registre militaire, Chartres, juin 1871 Registre manuscrit de la main d'un secrétaire militaire, clos et signé par le général Gabriel de Chamberet, alors commandant de la subdivision d'Eure-et-Loir, recopiant plusieurs circulaires adressées par le Ministère de la Guerre depuis Versailles. Ancien officier d'état-major, aide de camp du maréchal Vaillant puis dernier aide de camp du prince Jérôme Bonaparte, blessé à Solférino, Gabriel de Chamberet est promu général de brigade le 8 décembre 1870 pendant le siège de Paris, avant de prendre le commandement de la subdivision d'Eure-et-Loir au lendemain de l'armistice. Rédigé à l'encre brune sur feuillet de papier vélin, le registre compile quatre circulaires datées entre le 16 et le 21 juin 1871 : Un appel aux militaires volontaires pour rejoindre les corps d'Algérie ; L'ouverture d'une souscription publique nationale destinée à financer, à hauteur d'un million de francs, la reconstruction du palais de la Légion d'Honneur incendié par les insurgés de la Commune ; Une circulaire relative à la révision des pensions de retraite des militaires blessés durant la guerre de 1870 ; L'annonce d'une visite du général à l'hôpital de Chartres pour l'examen des hommes proposés à la retraite ou à la réforme. Le document est clos et signé « Chartres, le 20 juin 1871 » par le général de Chamberet. État : Bon état général.
