First U.S. edition of the last of Melville's novels published during his life- time and one of his most uncommon. The London edition appeared almost simultaneously. It's allegorical narrative featuring a company of riverboat travelers on their way to New Orleans includes characters partaking of some personality traits of Emerson Hawthorne Thoreau and Poe.
