Spines sunned pencil ownership inscription in each volume coated endsheets show heavy discolorations from evidently an early form of protective wrapper some isolated small ink spots to cloth otherwise for this edition about very good with only very slight scattered foxing. Worn slipcase. First American edition of Melville's third book and first novel issued a few days after the scarce three volume London edition. The original London printing which preceded the U.S. edition by two months consisted of only one thousand sets. As a consequence of their tepid sales in 1853 Bentley bound up remaining sets of sheets of this title of REDBURN and of THE WHALE in several forms of remainder cloth bindings including two-and three- volumes in one format with cancel titles bearing the new date. In the remainder format both due to the somewhat smaller quantities issued thus as well as to the exceptionally vulnerable multi-volume in one format they are much less often seen than the primary issues. There was but a single printing of 4508 copies; by the time of the Harper fire of 1853 2433 copies had been bound in cloth and 1955 in wrappers. The fire destroyed the 120 remaining unbound copies and 176 unsold bound copies. Although specific numbers relating to the first state are unknown it is much scarcer than the second state; even the copyright deposit copy was a second state copy. Volume I is in Blanck's TZ cloth with orange-yellow coated endpapers whereas Volume II is in A cloth with yellow coated endpapers. The stamping on Volume I is a simpler pattern than that on Volume II. Volume II's binding is the earlier corresponding to that described by Blanck in the "Note" contained in the entry. Stenciled in brown ink in gothic letter on the front free endpaper of Volume I is the name "Thomas Melville." NY: Sheldon & Company 1872. 1st edition. 8Vo. Blind stamped decorative red-orange cloth black lettering gilt spine title. 249 pgs sub-title Fun Love Society & Satire. Illustrated with 200 photo etchings by Arthur Lumley 1837-1912 who was the first artist sent to the Army of the Potomac by Leslies to cover the Civil War. Landon 1839-1910 was among the foremost humorists of his day although Twain disliked him as a writer. Supposedly a series of letters written in the future from Saratoga NY. Many appearing first I the NY Commercial Advertiser and here "pruned enriched with suitable additions." Corners spine cap are only slightly frayed front fly leaf with a one inch piece missing at top corner almost no foxing. OW a bright tight and Good scarce and humorous title. No markings.
