‎Moby Dick; or The Whale The Franklin Library‎

‎Pennsylvania: The Franklin Library 1979. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Near fine. 1979 Hard Cover. 527 pp. Navy cloth binding with gilt decoration and gilt edges. Decorative endpapers. With a portfolio of nineteenth century whaling prints selected and introduced by Willard Thorp. "Moby-Dick; or The Whale is an 1851 novel by American writer Herman Melville. The book is the sailor Ishmael's narrative of the obsessive quest of Ahab captain of the whaling ship Pequod for revenge on Moby Dick the giant white sperm whale that on the ship's previous voyage bit off Ahab's leg at the knee. A contribution to the literature of the American Renaissance Moby-Dick was published to mixed reviews was a commercial failure and was out of print at the time of the author's death in 1891. Its reputation as a "Great American Novel" was established only in the 20th century after the centennial of its author's birth. William Faulkner said he wished he had written the book himself1 and D. H. Lawrence called it "one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world" and "the greatest book of the sea ever written".2 Its opening sentence "Call me Ishmael" is among world literature's most famous.3 Melville began writing Moby-Dick in February 1850 and finished 18 months later a year longer than he had anticipated. Melville drew on his experience as a common sailor from 1841 to 1844 including several years on whalers and on wide reading in whaling literature. The white whale is modeled on the notoriously hard-to-catch albino whale Mocha Dick and the book's ending is based on the sinking of the whaleship Essex in 1820. His literary influences include Shakespeare and the Bible. The detailed and realistic descriptions of whale hunting and of extracting whale oil as well as life aboard ship among a culturally diverse crew are mixed with exploration of class and social status good and evil and the existence of God. In addition to narrative prose Melville uses styles and literary devices ranging from songs poetry and catalogs to Shakespearean stage directions soliloquies and asides. In August 1850 with the manuscript perhaps half finished he met Nathaniel Hawthorne and was deeply moved by his Mosses from an Old Manse which he compared to Shakespeare in its cosmic ambitions. This encounter may have inspired him to revise and expand Moby-Dick which is dedicated to Hawthorne "in token of my admiration for his genius"."--Wikipedia The Franklin Library hardcover books‎

‎Saint-Paul A.-M: Les Cahiers du Contadour 1939. First edition in French one of a very few copies printed. With headpiece after woodcut by Alexandre Noll and two plates. 512 4 xx pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Nut brown half morocco with gilt decorative paper sides spine gilt t.e.g. wrappers preserved by Devauchelle. Textblock lightly toned else fine. First edition in French one of a very few copies printed. With headpiece after woodcut by Alexandre Noll and two plates. 512 4 xx pp. 1 vols. 8vo. 'Je m'appelle Ishmaèl" - véritable édition originale de Moby Dick en français. The first notice of Moby Dick in French dates from the first volume of the Revue des Deux Mondes 1853 but Melville's vast novel was not translated into French until the 1930s. Jean Giono 1895-1970 was deeply influenced by American writers of the nineteenth century starting with Whitman. "The second great American Giono discovered in the 1930s was Melville . translating Melville was a labor of love - for years Giono would read him in the open fields" Edmund White. He began his translation in 1936; Joan Smith worked up a first draft that was rewritten by Giono and her friend Lucien Jacques publisher of the Cahiers du Contadour. The translation appeared in pre-publication serial form in numbers V-VIII of the Cahiers May 1938 to February 1939.<br/>The first edition was published in the first half of 1939 in a small print run variously described as only thirty copies or 600 copies here in a choice contemporary binding with the wrappers preserved. The outbreak of war put an end to the literary efforts of the Cahiers du Contadour. Giono's translation gained wider distribution in the Gallimard reprint in May 1941. Giono's fictional reflections on Melville Pour saluer Melville were also published in 1941.<br/><br/>RARE. OCLC: 459465908 BnF; 97456850 Harvard Kentucky Les Cahiers du Contadour unknown books‎

Covers browned and separate edges chipping else a very good copy. Separately-issued offprint from the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society Vol. XXXVI No. 156. 454-461 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The Arctic Drift. Melville's Remarks given in response to Nansen's Fram Expedition largely relates his own experience of having drifted in the "Jeannette" with comparisons to Nansen's intentional voyage among the Arctic drifts. In pursuit of evidence of an Arctic current and reaching the Pole Nansen in the "Fram" the first custom-build "arctic ship" set off in June of 1893. By approaching the floes off East Siberia and allowing the current to carry them the ship was frozen in for 2 1/2 years and travelled some 400 miles without the usual hardship associated with arctic exploration. Nansen realizing that the current was not to carry them to the North Pole in January 1895 set off with a dog team and a single man Hjalmar Johansen to attempt to reach the Pole. When it became evident that this would not be possible and after great difficulties they made their way to Franz Joseph Land where they met up with Frederick Jackson who had been seeking a land route to the Pole. They returned to Norway on his ship where they met the "Fram" in perfect condition. Nansen had proven that the North Pole was surrounded by ice and that the arctic drift. WH/9/86/6 unknown books‎
