Visible speech: the science of universal alphabetics; or self-interpreting physiological letters for the writing of all languages in one alphabet
London and NY: Simpkin Marshall & Co. etc. 1867. Inaugural i.e. first edition royal 8vo pp. 126 4 ads; 16 stereotype plates representing the invented alphabet in handwriting and longhand; the text with ample instances of Bell's invention in type; navy pebbled cloth gilt title on cover and spine spine gilt faded extremities rubbed textblock shaken and tender on account of paper quality but holding owner's signature on title page. Bell 1819-1905 the father of Alexander Graham Bell the inventor of the telephone "was the leading teacher of the science of correct speech at the three capitals of England Ireland and Scotland for twenty-two years . His books on elocution remain the standard authority more than 250 editions of The Principles of Elocution and The Standard Elocutionist having been printed" DAB. His visible speech system predates the International Phonetic Alphabet by about 20 years and was his attempt at creating a system of writing that could both represent every sound produced in any language and would also be derived from the physical act of producing sound so that it could be taught to deaf students by way of the physiology of language alone. The system only saw serious use for about a dozen years before it was deemed less efficient than other methods and was abandoned by educators. <br/><br/> Simpkin, Marshall & Co. etc. hardcover books

Mardi: and A Voyage Thither
2 volumes. xii-365 pages; xii-3878 ad pages. Small octavo 7 1/2" x 5 1/4" Original blind stamped plum cloth gilt title to spines Harpers gilt logo at base of spine with yellow coated end-papers in a three quarter leather in custom made half leather over marbled boards slipcase. BAL 13658 First American edition.<br /><br /><i>Mardi</i> the Polynesian word meaning "the world" is Melville's first pure fiction work while featuring fictional narrators his previous novels were heavily autobiographical. It details much like <i>Typee</i> and <i>Omoo</i> the travelings of an American sailor who abandons his whaling vessel to explore the South Pacific. Unlike the first two however <i>Mardi </i>is highly philosophical and said to be the first work to show Melville's true potential. The tale begins as a simple narrative but quickly focuses upon discourse between the main characters and their interactions with the different symbolic countries they encounter. While not as cohesive or lengthy as <i>Moby-Dick</i> it shares a similar writing style as well as many of the same themes.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Plumb coloring has faded and spine sunned with gilt dulled some foxing through out corners bumped with some light rubbing previous owner's name in pencil on title else about very good in a fine slipcase. Melville Herman
Redburn: His First Voyage
London: Richard Bentley 1849. First edition. Bound in contemporary quarter red morocco over marbled boards with marbled end papers and a marbled text block. Front hinge a little tender but otherwise a handsome binding. Bound with contents of both volumes up front no half-titles or title page to the second volume. Textually complete. Contemporary inscription on the title page. <br/><br/>Redburn is the story of a young man's first voyage at sea from New York to Liverpool and back and was based on Melville's own first hand experiences as a seaman on a similar voyage ten years before. The book was Melville's attempt at a more commercial sort of fiction - "a plain straightforward amusing narrative of personal experience" as he described it -- and Melville himself did not accord the book much esteem. Indeed Melville finished the work in under ten weeks and submitted the draft to his publisher with nary a rewrite. Many critics however have enjoyed the work - F.O. Matthiessen considers Redburn "the most moving of its author's books before Moby-Dick." <br/><br/>"But the great charm of the work is its realness. It seems to be fact word for word bating a little that is melo-dramatic and exaggerated in the hero at the outset. With this exception the tale is told simply and without the least pretension; and yet within its narrow bounds are flashes of genuine humor strokes of pure pathos and real and original characters" Contemporary Review in The Boston Post. ISRAEL POTTER: His Fifty Years of Exile
Boston: The St. Botolph Society 1925. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 301 p. Illustrated by Frank T. Merrill. First edition. Based on the life of an actual soldier who claimed to have fought at Bunker Hill Israel Potter is unique among Herman Melville's books: a novel in the guise of a biography. In telling the story of Israel Potter's fall from Revolutionary War hero to peddler on the streets of London where he obtained a livelihood by crying "Old Chairs to Mend" Melville 1819-91 alternated between invented scenes and historical episodes granting cameos to such famous men of the era as Benjamin Franklin and John Paul Jones and providing a portrait of the American Revolution as the rollicking adventure and violent series of events that it really was. Octavo. Original blue cloth binding with gilt black and white stamping. Exceedingly faint stain to the spine heel. The dust jacket is moderately browned more so along the spine and folds with some general minor edgewear; otherwise very good. The St. Botolph Society hardcover books

Melville Herman; Walcutt Charles Child
Moby-Dick
New York: Bantam Classic 2003. Reprint. Reprint. Very Good. Reprint. Spine lightly creased. 2003 Mass Market Paperback. xxvii 670 pp. Edited with an introduction by Charles Child Walcutt criticism and context by various authors follows text including the great D.H. Lawrence essay. "Moby-Dick is a novel first published in 1851 by American author Herman Melville. Moby-Dick is often referred to as a Great American Novel and is considered one of the treasures of world literature. The story tells the adventures of the wandering sailor Ishmael and his voyage on the whaleship Pequod commanded by Captain Ahab. Ishmael soon learns that Ahab seeks one specific whale Moby Dick a ferocious enigmatic white sperm whale. In a previous encounter the whale destroyed Ahab's boat and bit off his leg. Ahab intends to take revenge. In Moby-Dick Melville employs stylized language symbolism and metaphor to explore numerous complex themes. Through the main character's journey the concepts of class and social status good and evil and the existence of gods are all examined as Ishmael speculates upon his personal beliefs and his place in the universe. The narrator's reflections along with his descriptions of a sailor's life aboard a whaling ship are woven into the narrative along with Shakespearean literary devices such as stage directions extended soliloquies and asides. Often classified as American Romanticism Moby-Dick was first published by Richard Bentley in London on October 18 1851 in an expurgated three-volume edition titled The Whale and weeks later as a single volume by New York City publisher Harper and Brothers as Moby-Dick; or The Whale on November 14 1851. Although the book initially received mixed reviews Moby-Dick is now considered one of the greatest novels in the English language. The story is based on the actual events around the whaleship Essex which was attacked by a sperm whale while at sea and sank. Bantam Classic unknown books

Melville Herman
The Piazza Tales
New York: Dix & Edwards 1856. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 1st edition of Melville's first book of short stories the only book of stories he ever got published. Original cloth gilt sharp usually oxidized away slight wear to spine tips very good with almost no foxing surpassing for this cheaply made book. Setup first details to follow. Looking back to the American short story's roots there was Irving's Sketch Book 1819 the invention of the modern short story and the first American book that was a bestseller here and in Europe. 25 years passed while the next generation absorbed Irving's innovation then in a 100-year span came Poe's Tales 1845 Hawthorne's Mosses from an Old Manse 1846 and after The Piazza Tales there was short fiction at the pinnacle by Twain James Crane Bierce and O. Henry then Fitzgerald Hemingway and Steinbeck but Melville touches them all. 6 tales fill the book's 431 pages. The Bell Tower is a psychological gripper of ambiguous devilry that's an advance of Edgar Poe. The Lightning-Rod Man is the shortest but it's a parable of such absorbing invention and depth that it would be a career marker if credited to any other author. The Piazza the delusions of idealism and The Encantadas sketches hellishly reimagining the Galapagos Islands are longer and just as fine. All 4 are half a century ahead of their time and more intricate than most novels but it's the 161 pages of Benito Cereno good versus evil and the 77 pages of Bartleby the Scrivener isolation that soar to the heights and stand tall at the zenith. Every word of atmosphere theme plot and characterization the 4 pillars of short fiction are fused in an unfamiliar manner that is nonetheless easily recognized as truthful seamless symmetrical and readily welcomed but it was all too late for Melville. By 1856 he couldn't believe what wasn't happening to him. He'd already decided that mind is to soul as wave is to ocean and unthreatened by failure he wrote as brilliantly as he could for as long as someone would publish him and dismissed his editor's advice to write down to his readers and enjoy a lucrative commercial career Herman never realized that money is coined liberty. But Melville's martyrdom or the ignorance of 19th century readers does not justify why in the 21st century 100 years after his rediscovery this 1st edition continues to be undervalued beyond reason. In many ways it reads like it was written 65 years ago not 165 and I can cogently argue that it is American literature's finest collection of short stories. The 1st edition that some wrongly speculate may include 3 printings was a small one 2500 copies and sales were slower than bluff erosion 1051 sold. This is ironically though repeatedly the journey of real art so it's not surprising that after one last novel a year later Melville was excommunicated from literature failed to have his prose published again in his lifetime and like so many virtuosos before him he was never rescued.
