‎New York: Arbor House. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. c.1975. First Edition. Hardcover. nice clean copy with just the teensiest bit of shelfwear; the jacket is similarly nice with only some minimal wear along the top edge light surface-scratching to the rear panel. A Hollywood novel of sorts set in both Rome and California about the love affair between a beautiful Italian film star and a "somewhat balding" middle-aged Jewish American screenwriter. This was the first of just two novels by Shavelson himself a noted screenwriter/director who served three non-consecutive terms as president of the Writers Guild of America-west. Among his films as a director were two starring Sophia Loren -- HOUSEBOAT 1958 and IT STARTED IN NAPLES 1960 -- and it seems conceivable that the novel's titular character may have been somewhat modeled on or inspired by Loren. . "Typee 1846; in full: Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life is American writer Herman Melville's first book partly based on his actual experiences as a captive on Nuku Hiva which Melville spelled as Nukuheva in the South Pacific Marquesas Islands and the title comes from a valley there called Tai Pi Vai. It was Melville's most popular work during his lifetime; for 19th century readers his career seemed to go downhill afterward but during the early 20th century it was seen as just the beginning of a career that peaked with Moby-Dick 1851. ‎Quality Paperback Book Club 1996. Book Club BCE/BOMC. Trade Paperback. Very Good. Ink name and number on quote page a few minor spots to top page ridge. 1996 Trade Paperback. We have more books available by this author!. xi 504 pp. "Based on Melville's experiences as a common seaman aboard the frigate USS United States from 1843 to 1844 and stories that other sailors told him the novel is severely critical of virtually every aspect of American naval life and thus qualifies as Melville's most politically strident work. At the time though the one thing that journalists and politicians focused on in the novel was its graphic descriptions of flogging and the horrors caused by its arbitrary use; in fact because Harper & Bros. made sure the book got into the hands of every member of Congress White-Jacket was instrumental in abolishing flogging in the U.S. Navy forever. Melville scholars also acknowledge the huge number of parallels between White-Jacket and Billy Budd and view the former as a rich source for possible interpretations of the latter. The symbolism of the color white introduced in this novel in the form of the narrator's jacket is more fully expanded upon in Moby-Dick where it becomes an all-encompassing "blankness." The mixture of journalism history and fiction; the presentation of a sequence of striking characters; the metaphor of a sailing ship as the world in miniature Quality Paperback Book Club paperback books‎

‎Digireads.com 2010. Reissue. Trade Paperback. Very Good. Light ink underlining. 2010 Trade Paperback. We have more books available by this author!. 122 pp. "This is the final work of American author Herman Melville 1819-1891 discovered amongst his papers three decades after his death and published in Raymond Weaver's 1924 edition of "The Collected Works of Melville." The emergence of what some consider to be Melville's masterpiece sparked a revived interest in the forgotten writer despite the complex and incomplete nature of the manuscript. This is the first of many attempts to piece together and refine the sometimes illegible text which included questionable additions and omissions made by Melville's wife after his death. The story stemmed from Melville's interest in an 1888 article called "The Mutiny on the Somers" concerning three sailors who in 1842 had been convicted of mutiny. Billy Budd is a navy sailor accused of mutiny by a fellow officer and immediately strikes his accuser dead followed quickly by a trial conviction and execution. The novel presents several different versions of the events organized by Weaver into twenty-six chapters including the omitted "Daniel Orme" chapter. Digireads.com paperback books‎

‎New York: Harper & Brothers 1849 Two volumes. First American edition. Original publisher's blue-green blind-stamped cloth with gilt lettering to spines. A very good or better set with some light wear some toning to spine scattered spotting and small stains to cloth former owner ink signature to first blank of volume II usual scattered foxing to text. Overall a very attractive and tight copy without any repair or restoration. Much nicer than usually found. BAL 13658. Mardi is Herman Meville's third book and marks a departure from his first two works Typee 1846 and Omoo 1847 which are more autobiographical in nature. Mardi begins like Melville's preceding novels with a fictional South Seas whaling adventure story but quickly changes into a more allegorical and experimental text when the main characters abandon their vessel and travel to a variety of fictional symbolic countries. Melville's use of poetry and song also makes this text unique. While it was heavily criticized upon publication Mardi is best understood within the greater context of his entire body of writing. Rather than continue to produce variations of his first two successful novels Melville pushed himself to improve on his own writing and while perhaps not fully recognized in Mardi this laid the groundwork for his later novels including White-Jacket 1850 and Moby Dick 1851. This first American edition published April 14 1849 was preceded only by the three volume first British edition published on March 16th of the same year. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. Back when lectures were like today's performance art. Osborne would appear to have worked the church lecture circuit. Here written in ink at the bottom is scrawled that the performance was going to be at the Methodist Church on Tuesday July 24th. Since there are records of Osborne touring in the early 1920s we presume the date of this performance would have been 1923 in which year July 24th did fall on a Tuesday. Otherwise 1917 would be our next bet. Osborne was the son of missionaries and it would seem he would capitalize on his exposure to Indian culture to create this roadshow of his.

unknown books‎

‎TYPEE A REAL ROMANCE OF THE SOUTH SEAS . WITH BIOGRAPHICAL AND CRITICAL INTRODUCTION .‎

‎New York: United States Book Company 1892. xxxvi389pp. plus portrait and plate. Blue gray pictorial cloth stamped in black and brown. Armorial bookplate of Robert Henry Herbert "Ung Je Serviray" with clipped manuscript gift inscription affixed below illegible small nicks and frays at spine ends two blank lower fore-corners neatly clipped but a good sound copy. The first posthumous printing of the text one of four of Melville's proseworks prepared for reprinting by the United States Book Company by Arthur Stedman and of those four the only one to include an Introduction by Stedman. Melville authority Merton Sealts has called the Introduction "the best short Life of Melville written in the nineteenth century." Stedman commissioned La Farge's imaginative depiction of Fayaway which appears before the first page of text. The four titles appeared in several different colors of cloth. OMOO and TYPEE shared the same cover illustration. These editions are not uncommon but they are difficult to find in agreeable edition. United States Book Company hardcover books‎

‎Four Short Novels: Benito Cereno; Billy Budd Foretopman; Bartleby; The Encantadas or Enchanted Isles‎

‎New York: Bantam 1971. Reprint. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. Wrappers toned spine creased. 1971 Mass Market Paperback. We have more books available by this author!. 281 pp. Four short novels in one volume: Benito Cereno; Billy Budd Foretopman; Bartleby; The Encantadas or Enchanted Isles. "For many people the shorter novels of Herman Melville have been lost in the gigantic shadow of his universally recognized masterpiece Moby Dick. Yet the short novels in this volume written after his popularity had begun to wane actually represent the peak of Melville's artistic development. The compelling story line the profound symbolism the brilliant character delineation are all in evidence and there is a tightness and precision in these stories of which the author had not been capable before. Billy Budd the last of Melville's works is considered by many scholars to be his greatest. Bantam paperback books‎
