La Divina commedia di Dante Alighieri (terminata nel 1321) è universalmente considerata la più grande opera letteraria composta in lingua italiana e un capolavoro della letteratura mondiale. Il poema che descrive il viaggio di Dante attraverso Inferno, Purgatorio e Paradiso, a un livello più profondo rappresenta l'allegoria del viaggio dell'anima verso Dio. Negli ultimi anni di vita, il poeta e artista William Blake (1757-1827) portò a termine 102 illustrazioni del capolavoro dantesco, spaziando dagli schizzi a matita agli acquerelli. Come l'onnicomprensivo poema dantesco, i lavori di Blake spaziano da scene di sofferenza a immagini di luce, da orribili trasfigurazioni umane fino alla perfezione della forma fisica. Pur rimanendo fedele al testo, Blake apportò il proprio punto di vista ad alcuni dei temi centrali dell'opera dantesca, introducendo elementi interpretativi propri a concetti vasti quali il peccato, la colpa, il castigo, la vendetta e la salvezza. Oggi le illustrazioni di Blake, rimaste a diversi stadi di completezza al momento della sua morte, sono disperse in sette diverse istituzioni. Questa nuova edizione - corredata da dieci pagine pieghevoli formato paesaggio - le riunisce nuovamente, accompagnandole a brani tratti dal poema dantesco, in un'eccezionale accoppiata di due dei più raffinati talenti artistici della storia. Il più ortodosso degli scrittori e il più eterodosso degli artisti, ovvero il cattolico Gilbert Keith Chesterton e il visionario William Blake: un incontro apparentemente impossibile e che invece prende corpo in questo piccolo capolavoro dimenticato. Apparsa originariamente nel 1910 e finora mai tradotta in italiano, la rapida biografia che Chesterton dedica all'autore dei "Canti dell'Innocenza e dell'Esperienza" è molto più che una semplice ricognizione nella vita di un personaggio eccentrico, inclassificabile e geniale. Pittore mancato e occasionale frequentatore dello spiritismo in gioventù, Chesterton riconosce in Blake gli elementi di un'intesa profonda, fondata anzitutto sulla virtù - universale, eppure tipicamente inglese - dell'immaginazione, da intendersi non come costruzione fantastica ma come capacità di cogliere con un colpo d'occhio la reale sostanza delle cose. Il risultato è un pamphlet paradossale e pungente, nel quale le considerazioni di natura artistica si mescolano a fulminanti notazioni di politica e di costume (una fra tutte: l'Inghilterra del passato grandioso come nazione di bottegai e dunque di poeti, contrapposta al presente nel quale prosperano solo i "proprietari di negozi"). Paradossale e ispirato, Chesterton scorge nell'isolamento di Blake rispetto al suo secolo, il Settecento, un'anticipazione della propria irriducibilità alle categorie novecentesche...
