‎LIFE AND EXPLOITS of the Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote‎

‎1742. Vanderbank John. CERVANTES DE SAAVEDRA Miguel. THE LIFE AND EXPLOITS OF THE INGENIOUS GENTLEMAN DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA. Translated from the Original Spanish by Charles Jarvis Esq; London J. & R. Tonson and R. Dodsley 1742. Two quarto volumes. i-xxiv8xxv-xxxiii-viii9014355 pp.; i-xii388 pp. Second issue with "Supplement to the Translator's Preface" on the origin of books of chivalry by Wiliam Warburton inserted after I.xxiv. Illustrated with a portrait of Cervantes and 68 copperplate illustrations drawn by John Vanderbank and engraved by Gerard Vander Gucht from a Spanish-language Tonson edition of 1738 Lord Carteret's edition - the first deluxe edition ever printed and the first edition in Spanish published in England with new page labels. Vanderbank a popular portraitist 37 of whose works are in the National Portrait Gallery studied with Godfrey Kneller. The choice of a portraitist becomes clear in the "Advertisement concerning the Prints" where John Oldfield explains the restrained aesthetic hinging on facial expression rather than action which went into their planning. The portrait of Cervantes by G. Kent engraved by George Vertue is opposite the first page of the 90-page "Life of Michael de Cervantes Saavedra" dated 1738 in Volume I. Ten engraved headpieces and initials. Text and illustrations are clean but for some occasional light foxing or soiling. Recently bound to period in quarter calf with gilt rules and red and green labels on spine and marbled paper boards. This is a handsome copy of a lavishly illustrated edition of the Spanish classic. $3750.00. unknown books‎

‎CERVANTES DE SAAVEDRA Miguel‎

‎The Life and Exploits of the ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha. Translated from the Original Spanish.by Charles Jarvis‎

‎Engraved frontis. port. of Cervantes by Virtue several engraved head-pieces & 67 engraved plates. xxiii 8 xxv-xxxii vi 2 90 14 first leaf a blank 355 pp.; xii 388 pp. Two vols. Large 4to cont. speckled calf joints very expertly repaired spines gilt brown & green morocco lettering pieces on spines. London: J. & R. Tonson & R. Dodsley 1742. First edition of this esteemed translation and a wonderful association copy; this set belonged to Edward Gibbon and bears his bookplate in each volume. Gibbon was known for the wide range of his reading and he refers to this work in several of his letters and writings. He clearly liked this text; he owned an Ibarra edition in Spanish 1782 two editions of Smollett's translation 1755 and 1770 and the present edition. Jarvis 1675-1739 was a portrait painter and translator. A part of the literary circle of Addison Pope and Swift his stylized portraits of society ladies were very fashionable. Jarvis advised Sir Robert Walpole in forming his art collection and was appointed king's painter in 1723. "His major literary undertaking was an English translation of Cervantes' Don Quixote. Published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted it is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original."-ODNB. The superb engravings are mostly signed by John Vanderbank 1694-1739 painter and draughtsman. They were first used in the 1738 quarto edition of Don Quixote issued by the Tonsons in the original Spanish. The 90 pages in Vol. I print the first English translation of Mayans & Siscar's important Life of Cervantes. Fine and handsome set with his fine armorial bookplate in each volume. Minor rubbing and wear to extremities. unknown books‎

‎Cervantes de Salazar Francisco 1514? 1575 From the library of Zelia Nuttal and George M Foster‎

‎Cronica de la Nueva Espana‎

‎xxiv843 pages with plates and index. Quarto 10 3/4" x 7 3/4" rebound in half red leather with gilt lettering to spine with original wrappers bound in. From the library of Zelia Nuttal and George M Foster. Limited to 500 copies. First edition. <br /><br />Cervantes de Salazar was one of the principal chroniclers who gathered data on the history and ethnography of Mexico. His most important book <i>Cronica de la Nueva Espana</i> <i>Chronicle of New Spain</i> written at the command of City Council. The manuscript of this work was sent by the author to Spain in 1567 with a request for the post of royal chronicler. This manuscript was uncovered in the early 1900s uncatalogued in the National Library of Madrid as an anonymous manuscript. the first volume was published in 1914 and the second and third in 1936. The <i>Chronicle</i> is fragmentary since the first part which was to include the period up to the conquest of Yucatan either was never written or was lost; and the second part which was to be a history of the conquest breaks off with Columbus sending Villafuerte and Sandoval to the Pacific Ocean. Cervantes de Salazar's sources were the <i>Letters</i> of Cortes; the memoirs of Alonso de Ojeda and Andres de Tapia captains in Cortes' army; the <i>Memoranda</i> of Motilinia; the work of Lopez de Gomara; and the information gathered from others who had taken part in the conquest who were sill living in Mexico City twenty-five years later from whom he received useful information. The <i>Chronicle</i> is valued for its understanding and evaluation of the events it describes.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />"With compliments of the Hispanic Society" slip tipped in and slip from the Congresso de los Diputados tipped in to copyright page with Nuttall's name as receiving copy number three which is such labeled of 500 copies. The present volume was printed on "ex profeso" paper with melted types of "ex novo" on the pages both of which Ibarra created in his Madrid workshop specifically for this project. In near fine condition. A superior example of Ibarra's best-known work. Don Quixote tells the tale of a man so entranced by reading about the chivalrous romantic ideals touted in books that he decides to take up his sword and become a knight-errant himself with the aims of defending the helpless and warding off the wicked. With his somewhat confused laborer-turned-squire Sancho Panza they roam the world together and have adventures that have haunted reader's imaginations for nearly four hundred years. Don Quixote is generally recognized as the first modern novel. Over those years it has had an incredible influence on thousands of writers from Dickens to Faulkner who once said he reread it once a year "just as some people read the Bible". Vladimir Nabokov is quoted as saying "Don Quixote is greater today than he was in Cervantes's womb. He looms so wonderfully above the skyline of literature a gaunt giant on a lean nag that the book lives and will live through his sheer vitality. He stands for everything that is gentle forlorn pure unselfish and gallant. The parody has become a paragon." Printed for La Real Academia Espanola the Spanish Royal Academy by Joaquin Ibarra y Marin this edition was intended to be a supreme example of Spanish craftsmanship lavished on the nation's greatest literary work. This edition excels in beauty of type design paper illustration and printing as well as incorporating a carefully edited and corrected text. The illustrations and delightful ornaments were designed by the best Spanish artists of the day the paper was milled expressly for this edition and the type was specially cut. It contains the first map depicting the route taken by Don Quixote and Sancho Panza through Spain. The edition's fame among bibliophiles was thoroughly established throughout Europe within a very few years. The English bibliomane William Davis wrote in 1821 that "the celebrated Ibarra edition is so well known that I need only refer to M. Paris's sale 1791 where a copy sold for GBP16 16 shillings and Col. Stanley's where a copy sold for GBP17 6 shillings 6 pence" A Journey Round the Library of a Bibliomaniac. ‎First Part of El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha. Barcelona 1617.‎

‎Barcelona: Bautista Sorita for Miguel Gracian 1617. The earliest extant Barcelona edition of Cervantes' masterpiece and the first part of the first complete edition of Don Quixote. Small octavo bound in full contemporary calf with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine gilt turn-ins marbled endpapers all edges red illustrated title page. The second part of the first complete edition was printed simultaneously by Sebastian Matevad and sold as a complete set with the present volume by Miguel Gracian Juan Simon and Rafael Vives. Small stamp and inscription to the title page. Bookplate to the pastedown. Scarce and desirable. "Cervantes' great ironical romantic story is written in a style so noble so nervous so humane so branded with reality that as the wise critic has said the mere touch and impact of it puts courage into our veins. Not to have ever opened it. is to have missed being present at one of the 'great gestures' of the undying unconquerable spirit of humanity" Powys 27. Widely regarded as "the first modern novel" Cervantes' masterpiece was first published in two parts in 1605 and 1615. This the first known edition of the first part of Don Quixote printed in Barcelona was printed by Bautista Sorita for three different Barcelona booksellers: Miguel Gracian Juan Simon and Rafael Vives. The second part was printed simultaneously in 1617 by Sebastian Matevad for the same booksellers making the two parts combined the first complete edition of Don Quixote though just as the two parts were usually bound separately they are now found typically found separately when they seldom appear. ‎Tours: A Mame et Cie Imprimeurs-Libraires 1858. Both parts abridged but then it is the Grandville steel engravings that are the attraction here; good strong strikes if a bit diminutive no patch on Dore' of course. Hardbound in quarter pressed morocco with morocco corner-tips over green cloth boards old marbled endsheets a nineteenth century custom job in sound shape details below but first of all item has been sophisticated by a clever amateur. The giveaway is the much-too-strong tint a modern dark blue to textblock edges which clashes with book's general aesthetic; adroitly applied edge tints are dry stroked on with saturated cottonball but simply not comme il faut. Done to disguise an ex library state possibly. Further the corner-tips have most probably been strengthened with glue. As for the item as it stands there are trivial abrasions and text paper is not fully alkaline and is foxed throughout. nothing else to report. Plates are all in good condition these were struck on alkaline tissue and laid down on thickish alkaline paper. Viva Grandville! who has his own personal vision of our madman. ‎Novelas Exemplares‎

‎Pamplona: Nicolas de Assiayn Impressor del Reyno de Navarra 1614. Second edition. xvi 391 3 pp. Collation: ¶8 A-2Z8 3A-3C8. 8vo. Early twentieth-century pigskin spine titled in gilt. Light rubbing to extremities some toning and spotting to text small wormhole at inner margin of title-page and following two leaves light dampstain to margins of first few gatherings. Contemporary inscription on title. Second edition. xvi 391 3 pp. Collation: ¶8 A-2Z8 3A-3C8. 8vo. The rare true second edition of Cervantes' Novelas Ejemplares a collection of 12 novellas inspired by Boccaccio and first published by Robles in Madrid in 1613 between publication of the first and second parts of Don Quixote 1605 1615.<br/><br/>A Madrid edition of 1614 with the imprint of Juan de la Cuesta and Francisco de Robles was long thought to be the second edition and is identified as such by Ruis. It is in fact a piracy variously ascribed to the Lisbon printer Antonio Alvare vide Astrana Marín and more recently to the the Seville printer Gabriel Ramos Bejarano vide Jaime Moll "Novelas ejemplares Madrid 1614: edición contrahecha sevillana". <br/><br/>The present 1614 Pamplona edition is the true second edition with the privilege from the kingdom of Navarre granted on 11 January 1614. Cervantes' Madrid publisher Francisco de Robles had obtained privileges from Castille and Arragón for the 1613 first edition published in July of that year. He was determined to combat illegal reprintings and sued booksellers in Zaragosa intending to pirate the Novelas Marín VII p. 74. But he was unable to stop either the indignity of the 1614 piracy which used his own name or this authorized 1614 Pamplona edition printed by Nicolas de Assiayn. <br/><br/>This edition removes the sonnet of Juan de Solís Mexia printed in the first edition. Assiayn published a second Pamplona edition in 1617.<br/> <br/>The 1613 Madrid edition is rare known only in a handful of copies and we trace no copies at auction. The 1614 Pamplona edition is likewise uncommon with OCLC locating 9 complete copies only 2 of which are in the US UPenn and University of Chicago and the only recent auction record for an incomplete copy lacking its title-page. ‎En Haia The Hague: Por P. Gosse y A. Moetjens 1744. Rare early printing and one of the most highly coveted editions of Cervantes' masterpiece. Octavo 4 volumes bound in full calf gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine burgundy spine labels triple gilt ruled marbled endpapers all edges red ribbons bound in with numerous engravings after the drawings of Antoine Coypel renowned for the paintings he produced for King Louis XIV of France including those decorating the ceiling of the Royal chapel at Versailles. In near fine condition. An exceptional example. Vladimir Nabokov said of the book: "Don Quixote is greater today than he was in Cervantes's womb. He looms so wonderfully above the skyline of literature a gaunt giant on a lean nag that the book lives and will live through his sheer vitality. He stands for everything that is gentle forlorn pure unselfish and gallant. The parody has become a paragon." Por P. Gosse y A. Moetjens unknown books‎

Famous Dore illustrated edition of Cervantes with 120 full-page wood-<span class="glossaryQtip qTip">engravings</span> and 257 head- and tail-pieces by Gustave Dore engraved in the wood by Heliodore Pisan. Quarto bound in contemporary three quarters leather gilt titles to the spine raised bands illustrations by Dore. With text edited by J.W. Clark and a biographical notice of Cervantes by T. Teignmouth Shore. In near fine condition. One can hardly deny that Gustave Dore is not merely one of the most popular but also one of the greatest of all illustrators. Don Quixote was a text calculated to test even Dore. He was matching himself against Coypel and Tony Johannot not to mention the Spanish illustrators of the great Ibarra edition published in Madrid in 1780. He met the challenge superbly. At first he intended only 40 designs but Cervantes' book captured his imagination and he arranged for a major work. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza reached their definitive rendering in Dore's designs" Ray 328-29 337. The English-language edition of Dore's Don Quixote first appeared in 30 monthly parts beginning in December 1864. In September of 1866 Cassell announced the publication of Don Quixote in book form.
