Folio, First Edition, on laid paper, some minor spotting (mainly marginal) and some light offsetting in the text; mid-nineteenth century half calf, marbled boards with some shelf-scuffing to paper surfaces, sprinkled edges, back tooled in gilt and blind with five raised bands, very neatly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, a very good, clean copy. THIS COPY WAS FORMERLY IN THE LIBRARY OF SIR ANTHONY WAGNER, ARGUABLY THE TWENTIETH CENTURY'S MOST EMINENT GARTER KING OF ARMS. ITS BEARS HIS SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION 'Anthony R. Wagner, Portcullis Pursuivant of Arms, 4 Oct 1933' ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. In the late eighteenth century, the BM thoroughly revised the previous Cottonian catalogue (Smith, 1696) under the principal editorship of Planta. The mammoth revision was completed in 1800 and published on the instructions of the Royal Commission on public records. It remains the best published catalogue. Joseph Planta (1744-1827) succeeded his father as assistant librarian at the BM in 1773, was promoted to Keeper of Manuscripts in 1776 and finally to Principal Librarian from 1799-1827. See CDNB: III, 1397. Interestingly the printer, Luke Hansard, began printing the 'House of Commons Journal' in 1774; it is commonly known as 'Hansard' to this day. A SPLENDID ASSOCIATION COPY. EDITION LIMITED TO 400 COPIES. This magnificent library, assembled principally by W.H. Miller, was dispersed by Sotheby between 1920 and 1927. The books registered in the 'Handlist' comprise some of the rarest and most interesting works both of English and of foreign authors. The catalogue was compiled by Herbert Collmann until his death in 1930 and thereafter to completion by G.A. Paternoster Brown. A standard reference. THE 'HANDLIST' IS UNCOMMON IN THIS CONDITION SINCE MANY SETS WENT STRAIGHT TO INSTITUTIONS NEVER TO EMERGE UNSCATHED.

With the engraved armorial bookplate of a town museum and the donor's original signed presentation slip on front paste-down. Scapula's 'Lexicon' was first published by Henri Stephanus in 1557. This Appendix is dedicated to Anthony Askew (1722-1774), founder of the Bibliotheca Askeviana, and an eminent Classical scholar educated at Emmanuel College Cambridge and at Leiden. He became MD in 1750 and was appointed physician to St. Bartholomew's and Christ's hospitals, and registrar of the College of Physicians. Himself the author of a manuscript volume of Greek inscriptions, his outstanding library was sold by Baker & Leigh in 1775. See Quaritch (DEBC, p. 323). 'Askew's house was crowded with books up to the garrets. The collection was chiefly Classical, and it was its possessor's aim to have every edition of a Greek author' ([Sale catalogue of the] Bibliotheca Askeviana. Sive Catalogus Librorum Rarissimorum, Baker & Leigh, 1775). The sale of his library lasted twenty days and realised a total of £3,993 0s 6d; the principal purchasers were Dr. Hunter, Mr. Cracherode, the British Museum, and the kings of England and of France. Askew's manuscripts (presumably including those pertinent to the present work) were catalogued separately; their sale took place in 1785. The sale catalogue indicates that an appendix to Scapula's Lexicon was edited by Dr. Chas Burney in 1789 so it is likely that the present work is the title referred to. Charles Burney (1757-1817), classical scholar, was the son of Charles Burney the musician and musicologist. Since Burney the younger published numerous tracts and papers relating to Greek literature he could well be the author, but we have been unable to verify this attribution from any other source. Extremely scarce.
