‎AMORIM, Severino (Severino Amorim Ferreira)‎

‎(Folheto Romance) Um Réu inocente o uma Defesa Feita por Frei Damião (AFJN: 'Réu inocente e defesa feita por F. Damião').‎

‎No place, not dated. 16 unopened pages; Original illustrated and titled white wrapper; sm.-8vo.(ca. 17 x 11 cm).‎

‎*** A u f l a g e / Z u s t a n d (E- and Condition): --- FIRST EDITION ('Acervo fundacao Joaquim Nabuco' 85.10.1188; FC-634). - First page with minimal tear, else a fresh copy as new; more original folhetos by Abraao Batista (8; some not in AFJN) and Severino Simeao (1) in our stock, set-price by arrangement. . . --- 'Folheto' is the smallest form of brasilian privately printed booklets in woodcut-illustrated wraps which usually served as individual 'newspaper' or entertaining leaflets and generally were sold by the authors/producers themselves on public markets (feiras) by lining them up on a string which gave the name 'Literatura de cordel' to the whole genre. 'Folheto' is not only the general term for this unique type of publication but also for the smallest of its kind, the 8-pagers, while the 16-pagers are called Romances' and the largest type (32-pagers) 'Estorias'. The author often sings the beginning of his story, sometimes accompagnied by a guitar, to encourage passengers to buy his product. Becoming more and more popular the quality range of this genre spread from trashy tourist items carrying coca cola adverts to intentional serious works of poetry and graphic art while the latter represents a class of its own in popular or naive folcloric art. Originally meant as fast information or entertainment the fragile objects were not supposed to 'live' long or even become collector's items but as they are true documents of local history or of poets early creations this intention has changed over the last years. Especially the early folhetos from the 1970ies and 1980ies are presumably rare even more in a good condition.‎

‎Uses and Reuses of Medieval Manuscript Books / Usi e riusi del libro manoscritto nel Medioevo. Southern Italy. Latin Manuscripts / Italia meridionale. Manoscritti latini‎

‎, Brepols, 2026 Hardback, Pages: 280, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:24 b/w, 83 col., 8 tables b/w., Languages: Italian, French, English. ISBN 9782503616827.‎

‎Summary Manuscript books have many lives. Once assembled, they scarsely remain unchanged. They can be read and re-read, annotated, supplemented, dismembered, restored and physically moved, even more than once. The volume 'Uses and Reuses of Medieval Manuscript Books. Southern Italy. Latin Manuscripts' investigates these multiple lives through an interdisciplinary approach that embraces codicology, paleography, philology, and art history. With a focus on book circulation in Latin Southern Italy, the volume brings together 14 contributions written in three languages. Through rich and diverse case studies, the authors offer a new perspective on the history of the book. Divided into three thematic sections ('Uses and Reuses of Classical Texts, 'Manuscripts en route', 'Material and Immaterial Reuses'), the book explores the 'marginal' traces left by readers, the philological reception of texts, material transformations, and the journeys of codices. The volume reconstructs through these lenses the influence of manuscripts on medieval intellectual activity and offers insights that extend from the specific context of southern Italy to broader geographical and diachronic scales.

VII. 1496.‎

‎4to (150 x 216 mm). (18), CCCCXVI ff. Title-page printed in red. With one woodcut headpiece. Printed in two columns in gothic type throughout. One Lombardic initial in purple ink with penwork decorations. Original blindstamped full calf over thick wooden boards on 3 raised double bands; 5 large and 8 smaller brass bosses on each cover. Wants clasps. Rare incunabular edition of the "Summa Angelica", beautifully preserved in the original Flemish blind-tooled binding. Both covers are quartered by a cross ornamented with rolls of delicately interlaced rods and bands in the late Gothic style. The four quarters outside the cross are filled with impressions of the same rectangular panel (80 x 52 cm). The panel's inner rectangle is divided into two vertical stripes, each occupied by two interlacing vine branches enclosing within their curves four animals: a bear, boar, goat, and fawn facing a stag, monkey, lion, and hare. Round the margin runs an undulating leafy tendril into whose curves further hares, boars and stags are nested. Examples of this characteristic Flemish design, widespread in the early decades of the 16th century, are known in the Goldschmidt collection (no. 107, plate XLII) and in the Otto Schäfer collection (no. 26), bound ca. 1520 by Louis Bloc in Bruges and ca. 1537 Jacob Clercx de Ghele in Antwerp, respectively. Indeed, so strong is the similarity between the central animal-and-vine compartments of panels used by Bloc and the one at hand, exactly the same size and differing merely in the design of the border and in the fact that they are mirror-inverted, that it is tempting to speculate whether not one was produced as a direct copy of the other. - The principal work of the Franciscan canonist Angelo Carleti di Chivasso (1411-95), this is an alphabetically arranged dictionary of moral theology which develops, in 659 chapters, a set of rules for those desirous of leading a Christian life. First published in 1486, its subjects include a wide range of themes such as necromancy, prostitution, usury, inquisition, and alchemy. The work was widely read and aroused the wrath of Martin Luther, who judged it one of the most harmful symbols of Catholic orthodoxy - so much so that he called it "Summa Diabolica" and publicly burned a copy at Wittenberg on 10 December 1520. - Some contemporary marginal annotations in the text, as well as notes to flyleaf and lower pastedown; pretty ink ornaments applied to the title initial. Endpapers and last few leaves of text wormed. Margins show occasional waterstaining. Spine somewhat wormed; covers very well preserved showing only a little wear. Only fragments of the leather straps survive. - Provenance: later bookplate of the Chilean diplomat, bibliophile and art collector Matías Errázuriz Ortúzar (1866-1953) to front pastedown. Extremely rare: only 12 copies in institutional libraries worldwide, none in the United States or Great Britain, that in the Staatsbibliothek Berlin lost. Copinger II, 1665. GW 1941. Pellechet 3829. BSB-Ink A-534.050. ISTC ia00726400. Cf. Goff A-713 (first ed.). For the binding cf. Goldschmidt 107 and Schäfer 26.‎

‎ANNE HIGONNET - FIRST PRINTING‎

‎Lewis Carroll - BRILLIANT PHOTOGRAPHY SELECTION‎

‎Phaidon London 2008 A man of many talents Lewis Carroll 1832-1898 the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was a distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Christ Church College Oxford and a successful author of children's books. But long before he published the famous Alice's Adventures in Wonderland story Carroll was a fine and accomplished photographer. Most famous for his exceptional photographs of children which include portraits of Alice Liddell the inspiration behind his classic book. Carroll compiled his photographs into albums and send them to major cultural figures in Victorian society in the hope that they might want similar portraits of themselves or their children. His photographs thus include sitters such as the family of the Pre-Raphaelite painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti John Everett Millais and Alfred Lord Tennyson amongst others. His work also features portraits of close family and friends as well as landscapes and still lifes demonstrating the remarkable extent and complexity of Carroll's photographic art. His work has become embedded deeply in modern culture influencing many artists and his photographs have seen a recent resurgence in popularity demonstrating their importance to the history of photography. Carroll is now considered one of the greatest Victorian photographers. Anne Higonnet's perceptive discussion of Carroll as a photographer and as a prominent member of Victorian society offers fresh insight into his relationships with his sitters in the light of social conventions of the time and emphasises Carroll's dreamlike vision of childhood. This beautiful book echoes the albums Carroll sent out by clipping the corners of the pages as he did. This first printing is a brilliant presentation of some significant Victorian photography. The perfect jacket is protected. Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng. 1st Edition. Hardcover. As New/As New. Phaidon London hardcover‎
