4to. XL, (1) ff. (several errors in foliation, but complete, lacking only final blank). Decorated initials. 19th century boards (spine repaired). First edition thus of the satires of Persius, published but a month before the death of the editor, Murmellius. The work is preceded by a short biography of Persius, taken from Petrus Crinitus. Finely printed in a small "lettre bâtarde", including some Greek type, with legenda in the margins for the comments, and the main text printed in a slightly larger type, with the lines set widely apart. Georg Kloß copy, with his bookplate on the front pastedown and the relevant catalogue clipping from his sale (described as bound with an additional work) pasted above. The Frankfurt physician Georg Franz Burkhard Kloß (1787-1854) was also a noted historian of freemasonry. His rather notorious sale was held at Sotheby's in London in 1835. This volume contains long 18th c. notations on the title-page about the rarity of this edition as well as a contemporary humanist's extensive marginalia in Latin from fol. C1v to D2r, then again on D5v and D6v (slightly trimmed at rebinding), mostly pertaining to the text, but also to the commentary. These early handwritten annotations were boldly attributed to Melanchthon by Samuel L. Sotheby in his 1835 catalogue of the Kloß library, an unsustainable notion against which the collector himself spoke out clearly (cf. G. Kloß, Ueber Melanchthons angebliche Handschriften, welche in dem Catalogue of the Library of Dr. Kloss verzeichnet sind, in: Serapeum 2 [1841], no. 24, p. 369-377). In his monumental account of Melanchthon research throughout the centuries, Wilhelm Hammer provided similarly critical reviews of Sotheby's relevant publications: "[Wimmelt] von Sach- und Druckfehlern [...] Die hier zusammengestellten 'Privatexemplare' [Melanchthons] entsprechen nicht den Tatsachen [...] Eine höchst unsinnige Veröffentlichung" ("Abounds with factual and setting errors [...] The 'private copies of Melanchthon' here assembled are not in accordance with fact [...] A deeply misguided publication", cf. Die Melanchthonforschung im Wandel der Jahrhunderte 36 [1968], pp. 96 & 110). Subsequently in the collection of Cosmo (Cosmas) Nevill, Esq. of Holt, Leicestershire, with his 19th century engraved bookplate. Nevill would have acquired the book from the Kloß sale. - Some browning and minor dampstains. Pasteboards rubbed, extremeties bumped, spine professionally restored, as is a tear in the title page. Final index leaf H3 repaired by an early owner with loss of text (colophon on verso preserved). A slight wormtrack in top margin of H1 and H2 repaired (with slight text loss to H2). Fine Sammelband, containing the very scarce first edition of Peutinger's work dealing with the old borders of Gaul and Germania. Under the heading "De Lusitanis nautis qui in Indiam navigant", Peutinger discusses the travels of his fellow Augsburg citizens to the East Indies. Also includes poems by Sebastian Brant and Ringmann Philesius. - The volume contains four additional early prints: II: The work of the Roman geographer Gaius Julius Solinus (3rd c.). "The greater part of this work is taken from Pliny's 'Natural History' and Mela's 'Cosmographia'. It was revised in the sixth century under the title of 'Polyhistor'. It was a popular work in the middle ages" (Cox II, 336). - III: Rare Petit edition (ed. P. Phoenix) of the oldest preserved Roman geographical work. - IV: First edition of this Roman history to be printed in the German-spaking countries. - V: Rare edition of Bruni's history of the Gothic Wars. - Occasional insignificant waterstaining to inner margin; upper margin of first 10 ff. have small brownstain. The rarer of two Latin editions of the "Judenbeichte", both published in 1508, after the "Judenspiegel" the second treatise by the fanatical convert Johann Pfefferkorn (1469-1522/23), in which he discusses his former brothers in the Jewish faith and their celebrations, asserting that the Jews were more corrupting than the devil himself and petitioning the Christian authorities to force all Jews to convert or emigrate. The woodcut illustrations in Pfefferkorn's work are the earliest prints depicting Jewish customs and ceremonies. They include a Kapparot scene, ritual bath, matzo preparation, jumbled together with imaginary representations of Jews telling their sins to crows and a Tashlich service during Rosh Hashanah when sins are cast into water. - Pfefferkorn was a German Catholic theologian and writer. Born Jewish, possibly in Nuremberg, he moved to Cologne after many years of wandering. After committing a burglary, he was imprisoned and released in 1504. He converted and was baptized together with his family. Pfefferkorn became an assistant to the prior of the Dominicans at Cologne, Jacob van Hoogstraaten, and under their auspices published several libellous pamphlets in which he tried to demonstrate that Jewish religious writings were hostile to Christianity, and argued for the destruction of all copies of the Talmud. As late as 1509, Emperor Maximilian empowered Pfefferkorn to confiscate all Hebrew writings in Jewish hands and destroy any he found dangerous. After wide-scale protests, the humanist scholar Johannes Reuchlin was commissioned to give an expert opinion on Jewish writings, which led to a long-running battle of pamphlets between Reuchlin and Pfefferkorn, who was defended by the Dominicans. - A single red pencil annotation to the colophon, otherwise entirely unmarked. The sets of this deluxe issue that reached the market were sold for $10 each, a colossal price when we consider that lot 1462, a copy of Bodoni's 1818 Manuale Tipografico, sold for $4.50! See Hofer's obituary in the New York Times 12 October 1984 in which it is stated that 'Mr. Hofer who was secretary of the Fogg Museum at Harvard for 12 years was a recognized book collector focusing on 18th-century German Iberian and Italian publications. Mr. Hofer put together an Italian book collection considered the finest outside Italy. Konrad Oberhuber professor of fine arts at Harvard said of Mr. Hofer: ''He was one of the most farsighted collectors that Harvard ever had. .â€'. Two airmail letters both in good condition. Both addressed to Harrison at 15 Bryanston Square London. Each 1p. 8vo. ONE. ALS. 19 October 1966. He explains that he has been commissioned by the Oxford and Harvard University Presses 'to do a book on Edward Lear as a Landscape Draughtsman'. The book will 'contain a short chapter on the present whereabouts of Lear drawings the ownership of which has changed greatly in the last years'. He has been informed by David Markham that Harrison has 'a fairly substantial number of them' and asks to know 'how many'. He explains that he is 'not dealing with oil paintings except casually but with watercolors ink and pencil sketches'. He concludes with an appeal for information about 'any other considerable collectors of Lear of your acquaintance'. TWO: TNS. 28 November 1966. He thanks him for 'the information concerning the nineteen Lear drawings' in Harrison's collection. 'This for now is exactly what I need but I will inquire for further details from you if the occasion arises.' Hofer's book appeared in 1967.
