‎Printing images in Antwerp. The introduction of printmaking in a city: fifteenth century to 1585.‎

‎Rotterdam, Sound and Vision Interactive, 1998 Bound in black cloth with orange lettering, illustr. editor's dustjacket, 508pp., 17x24.5cm., 18 col. and 110 b/w ills., as new. ISBN 9789075607130.‎

‎This book discusses the production and consumption of printed images in an urban environment in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, up to 1585. The story begins in the fifteenth century. At some point - no one knows exactly when - prints were suddenly being offered for sale in Antwerp. Initially they may have been brought from other cities by merchants and travellers, but at length the first printmaker established himself in the city. In the sixteenth century Antwerp fast developed into one of the main centres of print making in the western world. The author explores the complex way in which the printed image secured a place for itself in the urban fabric. He reconstructs the different traditions from which the print producers evolved, and explains how existing institutions in the city related to the new medium. He traces the way in which the traditional guilds tried to bring practitioners of this 'singular skill', as it was labelled in 1452, into their ranks, and shows how the government tried to gain control of the new medium. He discusses the interplay between printmakers seeking strategies to market their wares, and a public confronted with an interesting array of cheap new products. The reader is given an impression of the variety of prints produced, which have thus far received little attention in art history. Archival research has generated a good deal of detailed new information on the prices of prints, the numbers of impressions made, the costs of printing and colouring, and so forth. Printing Images in Antwerp is an exploration of the impact of print making in the sixteenth century. It contains an abundance of new information, not only for print historians but for anyone interested in cultural history.‎

‎Paintings, drawings, prints, maps, jewels, gems, statuettes, medals, exotica, antiquities, dried animals, shells, corals, and scientific instruments. All these objects and more were on display in collectors? cabinets in Early Modern Antwerp. This book tells the story of the collections of artists and artisans, who stood at the centre of and shaped the city?s cultural life. In their double roles as maker-collectors, they put a strong mark on the culture of collecting. The culture of collecting was inextricably linked to changing conceptions of the material world, which went hand in hand with the emergence of new pictorial genres and the increasing dominance of forms of knowledge based on objects and material evidence. This book traces the important role of Antwerp artists and artisans in this culture of art and knowledge. It is a story about friendship and networks; about new forms of connoisseurship; and about innovation and appreciation.‎

‎Summary How did medieval authors publish their works in the age before print? This study seeks to achieve new insights into the publishing strategies of medieval authors by focusing on Nicholas Trevet, an English Dominican friar and Oxford master. Shortly after 1317, Trevet was commissioned by his provincial prior to write a literal commentary on the Psalter. He chose as his reference version the less commonly used Latin translation by Jerome from the Hebrew, and delivered his work before 1321/22. The first book-length examination of Trevet's commentary, this detailed study traces the ways in which the work was circulated by the author and his proxies. Through a combined analysis of codicological, textual, and historical features of the nine extant fourteenth-century manuscripts, this study identifies contemporary efforts to make Trevet's work available to readers within and without the Dominican Order, in England and on the Continent. Even during the author's lifetime the commentary was copied in Paris and reached readers in Avignon and likely in Naples. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Chapter 1. ‎Summary Written transmission relies on the fact of 'publication,' the step between the authorial process and reception. But what does 'publishing' mean in the context of a manuscript culture, in which books were copied slowly and singly by hand? This is a fundamental question. If one fails to appreciate the act of publication, one's understanding of any authorial work and its reception from any period will remain defective. The case studies in this volume ask what it meant for medieval and renaissance authors and their associates to publish. The contexts under scrutiny range from England to Italy, from hagiography to literary criticism, and from Carolingian monasteries to renaissance libraries. Medieval publishing remains undiscovered territory in the main. This volume constitutes a first effort towards a long-term narrative, from the ninth to the sixteenth century. ‎Repertorio di letteratura biblica in italiano a stampa (Ca 1462-1650)‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 637 pages, Size:210 x 270 mm, Language: Italian. ISBN 9782503584058.‎

‎Summary This catalogue collects Italian biblical works issued from the beginning of print to the middle of the 17th century. The abundant literature had multiple uses: the transmission of the sacred text, its interpretation, preaching, religious education, and devotional uses (meditation and prayer). It was also used as a foundation of learning and general knowledge, ethics, professional practices (i.e. in medecine and politics), domestic piety and everyday life, as well as literary and theatrical entertainment. This catalogue will help to reconstruct the access to the Bible by Italian lay people. It contributes to the historiographical debate on how Italians could read the Bible after the ban of biblical translations. It represents an extremely rich source of information for future research about authorship, readership and the very nature and use of this production, shedding light on forgotten bestsellers of Italian Renaissance.‎

‎Summary This volume brings together studies about books as artefacts within transitional zones. The history of the book from the handwritten to the printed medium is understood as a process marked by innovation and social change, but also by disorientation and bewilderment. The journey of a book from production to use was determined by a complex set of factors: communication among authors, makers of books, patrons, and readership; the emergence of publishers; and decisions to be made concerning production and publication. These factors underwent tremendous changes during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries owing to the spread of printing and the rise of Humanism in Europe. Particular focus is put on the physical evidence of books, both handwritten and printed, and what it can tell us about a book's production and its reception. ‎New Approaches to the Materiality of Text in the Ancient Mediterranean. From Monuments and Buildings to Small Portable Objects‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 262 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:119 b/w, 18 col., 1 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503601564.‎

‎Summary In recent years, the study of epigraphy and ancient writings has undergone a 'material turn', as scholars have increasingly looked beyond just the contents of written sources to also focus on their broader material and visual contexts as a way of exploring the layers of different meanings that can attach to written evidence. Taking this interdisciplinary approach as its starting point, this volume draws together contributions from specialists in different fields in order to analyze text-bearing objects and monuments from across the ancient Mediterranean world. From texts inscribed on large stone monuments and buildings, clay, or metal tablets, to writings on papyrus and parchment rolls, jewellery, vases, coins, and textiles, writing on different materials had manifold possibilities. The case studies gathered here examine novel approaches to the creation and display of inscribed objects, as well as to the ways in which such items were approached and perceived by people during a chronological period ranging from the Late Bronze Age to Late Antiquity. In doing so, the volume sheds new light not only on the interplay between ancient texts, text-bearers, and viewers within their wider spatial and physical contexts, but also on the possibilities opened by exploring the material aspects of writing through interdisciplinary approaches. ‎Summary Long-distance ties connecting Europeans from all geographical corners of the continent during the fifteenth and sixteenth century facilitated the sharing of religious texts, books, iconography, ideas, and practices. The contributions to this book aim to reconstruct these European networks of knowledge exchange by exploring how religious ideas and strategies of transformation 'travelled' and were shared in European and transatlantic cultural spaces. In order to come to a better understanding of Europe-wide processes of religious culture and religious change, the chapters focus on the agency of the laity in 'new communities of interpretation', instead of intellectual elites, the aristocracy, and religious institutions. These new communities of interpretation were often formed by an urban laity active in politics, finance, and commerce. The agency of religious literatures in the European vernaculars in processes of religious purification, reform, and innovation during the long fifteenth century is still largely underestimated. 'Networking Europe' aims to step away from studying 'national' textual production and consumption by approaching these topics instead from a European and interconnected perspective. The contributions to this book explore late medieval and early modern networks connecting people and transporting texts following three main axes of investigation: 'European Connections', 'Exiles, Diasporas, and Migrants', and 'Mobility and Dissemination'. ‎Summary This volume proposes a framework for reflection on practices of writing personal names in medieval sacred spaces, uniting historians, art historians, and specialists in written culture (both epigraphers and palaeographers). It traces the forms and functions of names that can be found within the space of early medieval churches and cemeteries, focusing mainly, but not solely, on inscriptions. By examining names written in various kinds of media, from liturgical books to graffiti and more formal inscriptions, the contributors investigate the intentions and effects of the act of writing one's own name or having one's name written down. Their interest resides less in the name itself than the interactions it had with its spatial, iconographic, linguistic, ritual, and cultural context, and what this indicates about medieval graphical practices. What is a name from a graphic point of view? What are the specificities of the epigraphic manifestations of names? By whom were names written, and for whom were they intended (if they were even meant to be accessed)? Addressing these and other questions, this volume shows the importance of inscriptions as historical sources and the contribution they give to the study of medieval societies at the intersection of history, anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, and semiology. ‎Summary A collaborative investigation of one of the best-known works of late medieval European literature, the Franco-Burgundian collection of short stories known as the Cent Nouvelles nouvelles. Modelled loosely on Boccaccio's Decameron and incorporating elements from Old French fabliaux as well as Poggio Bracciolini's Liber Facetiarum, the anonymous collection attributes its morally challenging and frequently humorous tales to named narrators including Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy and Louis of Luxembourg, Count of Saint Pol. The contribution of this new volume of essays is threefold: - empirical, in that it brings entirely new interdisciplinary insights into the study of the genesis and reception of the work; - methodological, in that it integrates study of the text within a 360-degree evaluation of the work's manuscript and early printed context; and - conceptual, in that it seeks to understand the social dimensions of textual production and consumption. These approaches unite ten principal contributions by specialists in the fields of art history, book history, court history and linguistics from France, the Netherlands, the USA and the UK. ‎Circulating the Word of God in Medieval and Early Modern Europe. Catholic Preaching and Preachers across Manuscript and Print (c. 1450 to c. 1550)‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 516 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:14 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503585154.‎

‎Summary This volume concentrates on how the sermon, a pivotal element in mass communication, aimed to shape the people of Europe. Rather than setting up the usual binary divides, it highlights the linguistic complications, the textual inter-relationships, the confessional cross-currents, and the variations between public and private sermon dissemination operating at different rates and with variable results throughout Europe. Effectively the emphasis here is on how Catholic preachers and Catholic preaching carried on in the period between the handwritten and the printed sermon, a time when not only the mode of production was changing but when the very purpose and meaning of preaching itself would soon alter in a western Christian world that was becoming no longer completely Catholic. By examining case-studies chosen from countries with contrasting manuscript and printing traditions (Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Low Countries, Romania, Spain, and Sweden), we aim to examine some of the main historical, literary, and theological factors in the development of the sermon in Latin and the vernaculars, which is itself in the process of changing formats, and sometimes languages, at a time of religious ferment from the advent of print to the death of Martin Luther. These essays, which are effectively in dialogue with each other, are divided into geographical/linguistic sections organized along broadly chronological lines. They circulate from the peripheries of Europe to the centre, moving from areas where evidence is now scarce to situations of thriving production. ‎How the Secularization of Religious Houses Transformed the Libraries of Europe, 16th-19th Centuries‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 720 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:16 b/w, 9 col., Language(s):English, French, Italian. ISBN 9782503593920.‎

‎Summary The closure of religious houses, in varying circumstances, affected all of Europe at some point between the sixteenth and nineteenth century. At different times and in different countries the consequences were widely varied, in some cases preserving medieval and early modern collections intact, in others abandoning books to their fate, or transferring them piecemeal into new ownership to serve different cultural purposes. Integral preservation or dispersal may each be viewed in positive or negative terms. For religious and political history there are many, and bigger, factors involved, and the effects of secularization worked on many things beside libraries and books. None the less, by focusing on books and libraries through these changes a particular narrative emerges of great cultural importance. It is the most important book-historical story for the survival and accessibility of Europe's heritage of the written word, one that interacts with major historical themes and still connects with future issues for the continuing role of books and libraries in the European heritage. A conference held in Oxford in 2012 brought together thirty experts in different aspects of this process or with knowledge of its impact in different countries and at different periods. The result was to bring together and share for the first time the similar and different experiences of different European countries, from Portugal and Spain in the west to Poland and Ukraine in the east, from Finland and Sweden in the north to Naples in the south, with ramifications stretching to North and South America. While reading this volume of collected essays, the reader may notice a disparity in the evidence that each author has been able to bring to bear upon their subject. Provenance research is well advanced in some territories, less so in others. In the decade since the conference and this publication, there have been some attempts to bridge certain gaps. But in general, there has been little new work in the years since the conference took place. The editors anticipate that this publication will stimulate further research, bridging some of the gaps visible in the evidence presented in this volume. Multiple avenues for further investigation open up, indeed, in historical and cultural studies, such as the impact of the secularization on nonreligious libraries, and the change in attitude with respect to certain disciplines and even to erudition itself. ‎Summary Visible English recovers for the first time the experience of reading and writing the English language in the medieval period through the perspectives of littera pedagogy, the basis of medieval learning and teaching of literate skills in Latin. Littera is at the heart of the set of theories and practices that constitute the 'graphic culture' of the book's title. The book shows for the first time that littera pedagogy was an 'us and them' discourse that functioned as a vehicle for identity formation. Using littera pedagogy as a framework for understanding the medieval English-language corpus from the point of view of the readers and writers who produced it, Visible English offers new insights on experiences of writing and reading English in communities ranging from those first in contact with Latin literacy to those where print was an alternative to manuscript. Discussing a broad range of materials from so-called 'pen-trials' and graffiti to key literary manuscripts, Visible English provides new perspectives on the ways that the alphabet was understood, on genres such as alphabet poems, riddles, and scribal signatures, and on the different ways in which scribes copied Old and Middle English texts. It argues that the graphic culture underpinned and transmitted by littera pedagogy provided frameworks for the development and understanding of English-language literacy practices and new ways of experiencing social belonging and difference. To be literate in English, it proposes, was to inhabit identities marked by Anglophone literate practices. ‎Summary The volume with a joint introductory chapter is in the first part devoted to Humanists publishing in the circle of the university of Leipzig at the turn of the 15th century: Paulus Niavis / Schneevogel (ca. 1453-1517) and Ioannes Honorius Cubitensis (ca. 1465-1504). The second part includes the translation work of ?eho? Hrub of Jelen (ca. 1460-1514), mostly preserved in manuscript, the first translation from Ancient Greek into Czech by V clav P seck (ca. 1482-1511), and a remarkable edition of Martianus Capella's work De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii prepared by Ioannes Dubravius (ca. 1486-1553). The volume covers a relatively short period beginning in 1488, when the editions of Niavis and Honorius are first documented in Leipzig, and ending with 1516, when Dubravius's edition of Martianus Capella was published in Vienna. ‎Summary An intriguing development in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth-century Christian Hebraism is how and why Christian scholars came to produce their own Hebrew books. Jewish Book - Christian Book: Hebrew Manuscripts in Transition between Jews and Christians in the Context of German Humanism offers a novel examination of this phenomenon in light of nearly unknown Hebrew manuscripts produced by German Hebraists in that period. Anticipating Hebraist printed editions, the Hebraist manuscript copies of Jewish texts represent one of the earliest attempts of Christians to independently form a stock of Jewish literature, which would meet their scholarly needs and interests, and embody a unique encounter of Jewish and Christian views of the Hebrew text and book. How Hebraist copyists coped with the inherent "Jewishness" of the Hebrew texts and in what ways they transformed and adapted them both textually and materially to serve Christian audience are among the key questions discussed in this study. ‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, vi + 369 pages, Size:150 x 230 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9780888448330.‎

‎Summary This volume pays homage to manuscripts and early printed books as material witnesses in the Middle Ages. The essays discuss broad questions relating to the partisan interpretation of texts, but they also illustrate how small details of format, script, and decoration uncover the text, its context, and its reception. Some articles explore scientific methods, examining whether social network analysis can offer an advance over traditional methods of establishing textual connections and using statistics to understand the transmission of ancillary materials. Others present critical editions and contextualize lost genres, providing a first edition of an unedited summary of Ovid's Metamorphoses steeped in the Boccaccian genealogical tradition, exploring mock funeral eulogies for animals, and discussing the variety of texts that pay witness to Ovid's penetration into vernacular literature. A closing brace of essays catalogue collections and reflect on changing trends in the study of manuscripts. ‎Summary The development of music publishing in the final years of the eighteenth and first decades of the nineteenth century had a decisive and far-reaching influence on every facet of the music profession. The proliferation of publications substantially altered the conception of the musical work and the nature and extent of intellectual property. Increasingly this allowed composers to support themselves financially through the sale of their own works, or even to establish, or collaborate in, publishing houses. The needs of contemporary consumers of music and new approaches to the production and dissemination of the musical work conditioned, and were conditioned by, the ever-evolving spheres of public and domestic performance that, in turn, stimulated the emergence of new musical forms and genres. This book focuses on the role of music publishing within the daily life and activities of composers at the turn nineteenth century, and its impact on subsequent patterns of development that influenced the course of nineteenth-century music. ‎Renaissance Illuminators in Paris. Artists & Artisans 1500-1715‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2019 Hardback, 280 pages, Size:220 x 280 mm, Illustrations:65 col., Languages: English, Latin, French. ISBN 9781912554287.‎

‎Summary The commercial manuscript book-trade in Paris, that had begun as early as the mid-12th century, was severely disrupted by the arrival of the first printing presses in Paris around 1475. This new invention converted a traditional system of book production that had developed and flourished over the centuries from a handcraft to the mechanical printing press. It was a change that affected not only the livelihood of those who wrote the books and the artists who decorated them, but also the social life of the whole workforce involved in the production of books. This publication traces the activities to which 16th- and 17th-century book artisans had to turn, faced as they were with a dwindling market for manuscripts. Those most affected were the illuminators and scribes who now had to seek alternative ways of making a living and so devise strategems for finding employment in other trades that would benefit from their skills. Thus the reader will discover well-known artists and illuminators finding jobs like adding illustrations to printed books, colouring wood-block prints and designing patterns and motifs for embroideries, tapestries and even glass and metal objects. A most interesting opportunity for illuminators was to get involved with the decorating of fans, a new fashion promoted late in the 17th century by the Sun King Louis XIV himself. In addition to the richly illustrated text, the volume also includes a Register of more than 500 named Illuminators in alphabetical order, giving also their affiliation to their alternative trades and listing personal details including family members and professional associates. The authors Richard and Mary Rouse, who are already widely known for their thorough research into the medieval book trade in Paris with their volume Manuscripts and their Makers, published a similar biographical Register of documented book producers up to the year 1500. With the present publication they are able to reconstruct how much the younger members and relatives of whole families of previous manuscript illuminators were able to continue to contribute to the now newly developing book-trade. This volume is therefore not only a contribution to the history of art and that of the book, but also provides a vivid glimpse into the social history of the period.

‎Summary Graphic devices such as tables and diagrams and other visual strategies of organising text and information are an essential part of communication. The use of these devices and strategies in books and documents developed throughout the medieval and early modern periods, as knowledge was translated and circulated in European vernaculars. Yet the use of graphic practices and multimodal literacies associated with them have mostly been examined in the context of Latin, Greek, Arabic, and Hebrew, and early vernacular writing remains an under-researched area. This volume brings together contributors from English historical linguistics and book studies to highlight multimodal graphic practices and literacies in texts across a range of genres and text types from the late medieval period until the eighteenth century. Contributions in the volume investigate both handwritten and printed materials, from books in the domains of medicine, religion, history, and grammar, to administrative records and letter writing. ‎Multiplicity of Scripture, The Making of the Antwerp Polyglot Bible.‎

‎, brepols, 2025 hardcover, 585 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:8 colour plates, Language(s):English. *New. ISBN 9780888442345.‎

‎The Antwerp Polyglot Bible (1568?1573) has long been recognized as one of the most ambitious typographical enterprises of the sixteenth century. Upon completion, it was the most elaborate Bible ever printed, a library of biblical erudition with editions of the ancient Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Greek, and Latin versions together with new scholarly instruments necessary to study and compare them. Yet powerful contemporaries also perceived it as a threat to the Church. The very idea of a polyglot Bible, especially one that included the Hebrew Bible and Aramaic Targums of Jewish tradition, ran counter to the Council of Trent?s decree that the Latin Vulgate was the only authentic version of Christian Scripture. In the middle of the sixteenth century, biblical philology and Catholic orthodoxy turned onto a frightful course of collision, and the pages of the Antwerp Polyglot Bible formed the force field at their crossroads. The Multiplicity of Scripture is the first book-length study of how the Antwerp Polyglot was made. Combining the history of the book with the history of scholarship and drawing on primary sources from archives and libraries across Europe, it reconstructs the editorial history of Christopher Plantin?s masterpiece from within his printing shop. Set in the contexts of fierce biblical controversies in Tridentine Europe and the fraught afterlife of Jewish traditions in post-expulsion Spain, it tells a story of crisis and craftsmanship, of ink-stained proofs in four different alphabets and the extraordinary team of scholars and printers that made this monument of Renaissance printing and scholarly endeavour.‎

‎Johann Buxtorf was a Hebrew scholar of prodigious energy and learning who believed that Christian scholars must master not only the Hebrew Bible but also the entire range of Jewish writing. He surveyed a vast corpus of Jewish texts and used them to describe the customs and ceremonies of Ashkenazic Jews. Working as an editor and a censor, he strove ? not always successfully ? to produce editions of the Hebrew Bible and prayerbook that contained the best of Jewish learning but were purified of anti-Christian sentiments. This book uses unpublished sources of many kinds, from Buxtorf?s marginal notes in his Jewish books to letters to him in Hebrew from Jewish print professionals, to tell his story. ‎This is an essential, novel study of the distribution networks, pricing standards, and astounding volume of sales that characterized a vital component of the European print trade in the Early Modern Period, as revealed by the exceptional records of the Plantin-Moretus Press of Antwerp.- The European print trade is an evocative topic. Not only art historians, but social, cultural, and economic historians all agree that it was of vital importance in the Early Modern Period, as the conveyer of established icons, as well as the most recent imagery and news. Yet, thus far it is often discussed solely on the basis of tantalizing, isolated case studies. Bowen and Imhof?s ground-breaking publication will address this significant lacuna by demonstrating in unprecedented detail how booksellers were routinely engaged in the extensive international distribution and sale of hundreds of thousands of prints annually between the mid-sixteenth and mid-seventeenth centuries. Based upon the exceptionally well-preserved archives of the renowned Plantin-Moretus Press of Antwerp, this book presents the often-overlooked interwoven worlds of booksellers and print sellers, while documenting Antwerp?s continued fame for the production and distribution of prints. Together with a remarkable array of clients, ranging from the cultivated and influential elite to ordinary laymen, these figures provide palpable examples of suppliers, buyers, and middlemen that reveal how they interacted with one another. Simultaneously, this work illuminates numerous critical related topics, ranging from how prints were priced and the relative quantities in which they were sold, to the importance of national and professional networks in these transactions. The result is an essential, novel study that clarifies how the print trade worked in practice during a burgeoning period in its evolution. TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter 1. Introduction Chapter 2. ‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2026 Hardback, Pages: 395 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language English. NEW. ISBN 9782503618258.‎

‎Summary What did nature mean to ordinary English readers in an age of Enlightenment? What did they read to connect with its meanings and messages? This book surveys the explosion in household advice, religious, self-help, and leisure reading that accompanied urban growth, improving literacy, and a rapidly growing press. It charts the interrelated fortunes of London authors, printers, booksellers, and readers in a revisionist history of cheap print from the Restoration to the French Revolutionary Wars. This is an account of pamphlets and short books that, according to book trade metrics, constituted most of what lower-to-middle class Britons were buying in 1700. Many of these titles were also owned by the rich. Today?s distinctions between the natural, preternatural, and supernatural began to emerge throughout Western Europe at this time. This helped create an intellectual divide between cheap and expensive publications that would have a lasting impact upon Western culture. This book focuses on popular participation in ? and responses to ? that process by reconstructing the production and reception of bestselling print. Publishers are more important to this story than authors because they tinkered with contents and meanings over time. Their wares consequently illustrate changing mainstream beliefs about fact, experience, causation, logic, and authority. By the later eighteenth century, what was produced for a general audience said important things about how English people perceived their identities, communities, and histories.
