‎Brach, Pierre de (Reinhold Dezeimeris, editor)‎

‎Oeuvres poetiques de Pierre de Brach, Sieur de la Motte Montussan (including Oeuvres Inedites)‎

‎THE ONLY COPY PRINTED ON VELLUM OF THIS IMPORTANT AND BEAUTIFUL PUBLICATION. Two volumes, complete. FIRST AND ONLY COMPLETE EDITION, and first and only critical edition of the works of Pierre de Brach, an important 16th-century poet from Bordeaux, a close friend of Montaigne and many other key French Renaissance literary figures. ABOUT HALF THE WORKS ARE PUBLISHED HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME: Dezeimeris had discovered an important manuscript which included many texts thought lost forever, including the "Tombeau et regrets funebres sur la mort d'Aymee" and the second book of the "Amours". Extensive scholarly apparatus, notes, and index. Edition limited to 260 copies, of which this is THE UNIQUE COPY beautifully printed (by Gounouilhou of Bordeaux) on FINE VELLUM, with numerous woodcut ornaments, headpieces, and tailpieces. Title-pages printed in red and black, with large woodcut printer's device. Text in Italic type, notes in Roman type. Two engraved portraits on chine applique and two wood-engraved plates. 4to. Attractively bound in contemporary half red morocco. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Minimal traces of wear to bindings, else a fine set. Vicaire I, 919 (citing this copy); Brunet supp. I, 167 (citing this copy): "Belle publication."

‎Fleuret, Fernand and/or Emile Henriot (Gaston-Louis Vuitton)‎

‎Eloge de la plaquette‎

‎First and only edition. THE EXTRAORDINARILY RARE FIRST PUBLICATION (of a grand total of two) OF THE SOCIETE DE BIBLIOPHILES "LES PLAQUETTES", AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF FRENCH PRE-WAR FINE AVANT-GARDE TYPOGRAPHIC PRINTING. 2 blank leaves; 27 pp. This bibliophile society was conceived by Gaston-Louis Vuitton in 1929, and by 1932 it had 57 members but hadn't yet published anything. In that year it lost all of its funds when its bank went belly up. The Society got rolling again in 1938, and finally printed this gorgeous book in 1939. The text, of course, is about booklets, and their history in France and in the world. Shortly after this book was printed World War II and the German Occupation put a final end to this Bibliophile Society: its only other publication was an equally rare edition of St Francis' "Cantique du soleil", printed in 1943. (Fleuret died in 1945.) Notable avant-garde typographical design on cover. Edition limited to 111 numbered copies (but much rarer, as few if any copies were ever actually distributed to the members of the SociÈtÈ) beautifully printed with huge margins on fine Montval laid paper. Folio. Publisher's wraps. UNCUT AND UNOPENED, FINE AND BRIGHT, LIKE NEW WITH NO DEFECTS. Original paper knife laid in. An incredible survival, even more so in such pristine condition. The only copy in WorldCat is the one in the BibliothËque Nationale.‎

‎Manuel, Blaise Etienne and FranÁois Dufart (Jacques-Eustache Deseve et al., illustrators)‎

‎Nouveau museum d'histoire naturelle; ou representation fidelle des etres les plus remarquables compris dans les trois regnes de la nature en figures coloriees sur planche.... Tome premier. Regne animal.--Classe des quadrupedes vivipares ou mammifer‎

‎ALL PUBLISHED of this abortive yet spectacular attempt at a comprehensive survey of natural history, THE FIRST BOOK ON ZOOLOGY WITH COLOR-PRINTED (as opposed to hand-colored) PLATES. Comprises a general preface describing the entire project (by Dufart), an introduction to this volume (by Manuel), 101 GORGEOUS FULL-PAGE COLOR-PRINTED STIPPLE-ENGRAVED PLATES OF MAMMALS IN EXOTIC LANDSCAPES (usually two scenes per plate, after Deseve and other artists), and descriptive notes on each mammal depicted (by Manuel). 30 pp., 101 plates, 60 pp. Dedicated to Napoleon. Text printed on fine wove paper, plates on very fine, thick wove paper. After the appearance of this volume, the project was suspended because the publishers could not find enough subscribers (there is a list of the 24 who subscribed to this first volume on the back of the half-title). The reasons for this failure are obvious: each volume cost a staggering 60 francs (not including the binding) and the images of the animals, although bright, beautiful, and charming, are not particularly accurate. Large thick 8vo. BOUND IN CONTEMPORARY FULL CRIMSON MOROCCO, WITH ELEGANT GILT DECORATION ON COVERS AND SPINE. All edges gilt. Light wear to extremities of binding, but still very attractive. Internally bright. Two copies in NUC. QuÈrard (La France littÈraire, V, 497) doubts the very existence of this work: "...ne paraÓt avoir ÈtÈ que projetÈ, car on n'en trouve mention nulle autre part que dans le vol. de M. Debray." An extremely rare, unusual, and altogether stunning book.‎

‎Philes, George P. (Andrew J. Odell)‎

‎Bibliotheca Curiosa: Catalogue of the Library of Andrew J. Odell‎

‎AN IMPORTANT EXAMPLE OF AMERICAN COLOR PRINTING. Two volumes, complete. A remarkable catalogue of a remarkable collection. Odell focused on bibliography, books about books, history of printing and the graphic arts, and fine printing, at a time when few American collectors were interested in these areas. Books in these categories account for well over half of the 2,434 lots. There is also a wide selection of extremely rare books in other areas, especially the occult, including incunables and a few highly important medieval manuscripts. The catalogue itself is notable for two reasons. First, there are the precise, knowledgeable, and extensive descriptions, with numerous references to specialized bibliographies: most American book catalogues of this period give the barest information about the items at hand. Second, this is certainly the most lavishly-produced American book auction catalogue of the 19th century. It was beautifully printed on fine laid paper, with numerous engraved initials, headpieces, and tailpieces. VOLUME I OF THE PRESENT SET IS FROM THE DELUXE ISSUE, ONE OF VERY FEW COPIES PRINTED PRIMARILY FOR PRIVATE CIRCULATION, with the initials, headpieces, and tailpieces printed in different colors. The sets of this deluxe issue that reached the market were sold for $10 each, a colossal price when we consider that lot 1462, a copy of Bodoni's 1818 Manuale Tipografico, sold for $4.50! Volume II is from the regular issue, and is NEATLY PRICED THROUGHOUT in a contemporary hand. Title-pages printed in red and black. Facsimiles. 4to. Volume I is ABSOLUTELY PRISTINE, uncut, unopened, unsewn, unstabbed, and unglued, loosely laid into original wraps (light soiling to wraps). Volume II in bound in half leather and marbled boards, with original wraps bound in (binding somewhat worn at extremities). Both volumes internally FINE, AND BRIGHT. Complete sets are extremely rare (volume II is especially scarce). Not in Bigmore & Wyman or Taylor.‎

‎Thou, Jacques-Auguste de (Jacobus Augustus Thuanus)‎

‎Jacobi Augusti Thuani HISTORIARUM SUI TEMPORIS pars prima‎

‎FIRST EDITION OF THOU'S HISTORY OF THE 16TH CENTURY, A MASTERPIECE OF FRENCH HISTORIOGRAPHY. 18, 684, 36 pp., complete. Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617), was one of the great statesmen and scholars of his time, and the Historiarum is his most important work. THIS IS THE TRUE FIRST EDITION, printed folio (another edition, in two volumes 8vo--with some large-paper copies printed 4to--was published later the same year). Moreover, the TITLE-PAGE IS IN THE FIRST STATE, which is exceedingly rare. Beautifully printed by Robert Estienne (1559-1630), with the title in red and black and attractive woodcut head- and tail-pieces throughout. Folio. Beautifully bound in recent quarter vellum and marbled boards. FINE AND BRIGHT, both inside and out, with excellent margins and bright white paper. Peignot II, 159 (pointing out that this work was suppressed from the moment of publication). An outstanding copy of a rare and important book: the only other copy I have located of the first edition with the first-state title-page is the Oxford copy.‎

‎Morte Arthure. The Alliterative Romance of the Death of King Arthur. Now first printed from a Manuscript in Lincoln Cathedral‎

‎FIRST EDITION OF THE ALLITERATIVE MORTE ARTHURE, one of the great monuments of Arthurian literature and of Medieval English literature. This poem, like Gawain and the Green Knight, is part of the late Medieval literary movement now called the "alliterative revival". According to Larry Benson, the most recent editor of this poem, the Alliterative Morte Arthure "lacks the delicacy and balance of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, but the vigor of its narrative, the epic sweep of its action, and its coolly realistic presentation of fourteenth-century warfare lend the poem an interest of its own." EDITION LIMITED TO JUST 75 COPIES, each numbered and signed by the printer, of which THIS IS ONE OF ONLY 50 COPIES PRINTED ON THIN PAPER. Beautifully printed in large, attractive type on fine wove paper, with large margins. Frontispiece engraving by F. W. Fairholt after a manuscript miniature depicting the Round Table. Large 4to. Bound in original cloth, beautifully decorated in blind. Uncut. Professionally recased, with original endpapers preserved. Frontispiece discolored (as always, because of paper used) and a bit stained. Otherwise FINE AND BRIGHT. A legendary rarity, in its original binding. Extremely rare and important. sxxi‎
