Munn, Orson D.: Editor
Scientific American November (Nov.) 1929 Volume 141 Number 5 - Featuring Timeless Great Depression Advertising Fail
Lucky Strike cigarette ad on back cover provides a truly classic and timeless example of a mis-timed advertisement. Consider that the great Wall St. stock market crash of 1929 occurred mere days before this issue hit the newsstands. Beneath the caption "An Ancient Prejudice has been removed" appears a clenched fist labeled as "American Intelligence" breaking a heavy chain. Top left a paranoid miser stacks his gold by candlelight. Top right a wealthy couple visits their palatial bank. Text beneath miser reads "Hoarding gold with the fanatical zeal of the miser has vanished. American Intelligence sponsors thousands of banking institutions to which the individual (i.e. the wealthy couple) safely entrusts his wealth." The message is clear. Readers should put their trust (and money) in the banks, and shun gold. This issue was likely printed just as the Great Crash occurred, causing countless financial institutions to go under - and destroying even more individual fortunes. (The ad goes on to claim that cigarettes have similarly overcome the prejudice against them.) A truly stunning work which deserves to be preserved and reflected upon in this age of limitless fiat currency printing. Average wear with three-inch crease to lower corner of back cover. Suitably framed and mounted, this ad will make a superlative office display for any precious metals executive. Magazine

Aretino, Pietro.
Quattro comedie [...] Cio' è Il Marescaléo, La Cortegiana, La Talanta, l'Hipocrito. Novellamente ritornate, per mezzo della stampa, a luce, a richiesta de conoscitori del lor valore. [London, John Wolfe], 1588.
Small 8vo. 4 parts in one volume. VIII, 285, (3) ff. With medallion portrait (legend: "D. Petrus Aretinus Flagellum Principum") on title (repeated three times). 19th c. calf (slightly worn). Pirated edition of Aretino's "comedie" (the first appeared 1553 in Venice) printed by one of the most rebellious and outspoken of all the Elizabethan printers. Wolfe's production was in all probability chiefly destined for the European continent, as all of Aretino's works had been on the Roman Index since 1558; copies were offered for sale at the Frankfurt Book Fair of 1589. Aretino's comedies are considered the best of his works. They rank among the great works of Renaissance drama, and many of their leading characters were prototypes for later playwrights. ‘La Talanta’, for example, prepared the way for Shakespeare’s character Falstaff. "[U]n frontespizo particolare ad ogni comedia [...] ha al fine una Lettera dell'Aretino a Daniele Barbaro" (Gamba). - One gathering misbound, but a nice complete copy. Edit 16, CNCE 2486. Index Aureliensis 107.120. BM-STC Italian 517. Adams A 1562. Gamba 1204 note. Brunet I, 408. Pforzheimer 800. Woodfield, Surreptious Printing in England 43.

Astesanus de Ast.
Canones poenitentiales. [Nuremberg, Peter Wagner, c. 1495].
4to. Gothic type, 33 lines. 8 unnumbered ff. Modern half calf with marbled boards and gilt-stamped title to spine. Probably the first separate edition of the 'Canones', taked from Astesanus de Ast's principal work, the 'Summa de casibus conscientiae'. GW cites an undated Leipzig edition, as well as the Vienna edition printed the following year. A specialty of this present printing is its simultaneous use of a woodcut title line together with letter printing on fol. 1, "an experiment not found elsewhere" (BMC). - Traces of a small, obliterated stamp on t. p., otherwise a very fine, well-preserved copy in an attractive binding. GW 2747. Goff A 1158. HC 4340. BMC II, 465. ISTC ia01158000.

[Concilia omnia].
Conciliorum omnium, tam generalium, quam provincialium [...] volumina quinque. Venice, Domenico Nicolini [da Sabbio], 1585.
Folio. 5 vols. (22) ff. (last blank), 24 ff., 1226, (2) pp. (6), (11) ff., 1 blank f., 870, (2) pp. (4), 18 ff., 986, (2) pp. (6), 15 ff., 1 blank f., 927, (1) pp. (2), 14 ff., 791, (1) pp. Title-page printed in red and black throughout. Two different printer's devices to title-page and final leaf of each volume. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards; 2 clasps each. Nicolini's rare five-volume collection of Synods, surpassing all previous collections (cf. LThK). - All volumes but the first bear a ms. dedication on the front flyleaf: "Dises Buech ist dem Herrn Spitelmaister unnd seinem Convent zu Memmingen von Herr Jacob Fugger dem Eltern verehrt worden Imm December Ao. 1588"; all volumes are marked on their spines as "Donum generosi dni. Baronus Jacobi Fuggeri" (the original flyleaf of vol. 1 is probably lost). Jacob Fugger (1542-98; after 1560: Herr von Babenhausen, Wellenburg und Boos) was the son of the banker Anton Fugger (nephew and successor of Jacob Fugger "the Wealthy"). He was known as "the Elder" to distinguish him from his like-named nephew (1567-1626) who in 1588 was still a student in Rome and later became Bishop of Constance. - Slight worming throughout, more pronounced in vol. 2 (especially near beginning and end; some loss to text). The splendid, exceptionally well-preserved pigskin bindings (slightly rubbed, back cover of vol. 2 showing minute chafing, otherwise perfect) are probably the work of the Augsburg master Jakob Bitmer (cf. Gedik, Simon.
Defensio sexus muliebris, opposita futilissimae disputationi recens editae, qua suppresso authoris & typographi nomine blaspheme contenditur, mulieres homines non esse. Leipzig, Michael Lantzenberger [für Henning Grosse], 1595.
4to. (62) pp., last bl. f. With woodcut printer's device on title-page. (12) pp. Boards (c. 1900). Edges sprinkled in red. The two most important literary reactions to the scandalous anonymous anti-feminist polemic, "Disputatio nova contra mulieres, qua probatur eas homines non esse" (no place, 1595; VD 16, ZV 4618), which had denied the humanity of women (and thus their capacity for salvation). The pamphlet sparked a surge of 16th and 17th century satires. The theology department in Wittenberg warned its students against reading the book, while the Leipzig Professor of Hebrew, Simon Gediccus (1551-1631), published an apology of the female sex in which he refutes the pamphlet word for word. - Somewhat browned throughout due to paper; ms. note on last leaf. From the collection of the German lawyer Christian Friedrich Eberhard (1753-1818) with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Both works are very rare; neither one in German auction records since 1950. I: VD 16, G 652. - II: VD 16, W 3701.
