8vo. (16), 302 pp. With woodcut printer's device on t. p. 18th-c. marbled calf with label to richly gilt spine. Edges gilt. First and only edition of Hulsbusch's collection of ribald tales. Contains, among other anecdotes, ten stories from Martinus Montanus's "Wegkürzer" and 43 items from Jakob Frey's "Gartengesellschaft", translated into Latin. Among those written by himself is the story of a girl who showed herself naked at her window during a pageant in Augsburg. - The present copy is that of the Méon library described by Brunet: it was auctioned in 1803 at the Meón sale (no. 2446) and was regarded as rare even then. The front flyleaf bears Méon's purchasing memo: he had bought the book for 37 francs at the sale of the library of the great German scientist Johann Heinrich Lambert in 1780. At the Méon sale, it was knocked down to the French veterinarian Jean Baptiste Huzard (1755-1838), whose library stamp is on the reverse of the title page. In the 20th century, the book belonged to the French writer and collector of erotic literature Pierre Lous, whose pencil note is on the front flyleaf. Cf. Hauptwerk des spanischen Jesuiten Juan de Maldonado (französisch: Jean Maldonati, 1533-83), gefeiert als Pionier der Exegese. Als Lehrer der Philosophie und Theologie am Pariser Collegium von Clermont brach er mit der scholastischen Tradition und erzielte damit eine sensationelle Popularität unter seiner Hörerschaft. 1576 ließ ihn die Sorbonne aus Paris entfernen. In Bourges verfaßte er seinen Evangelienkommentar und wurde Visitator der französischen Provinz. Nach seinem Tod im Alter von nicht einmal 50 Jahren hinterließ er nur Manuskripte. "Durch seine Bibelkommentare, vor allem sein Hauptwerk über die vier Evangelien, verdient er als einer der Gründer der theologischen Exegese Ansehen" (Bautz, BBKL V, 613ff.). "Einer der größten Exegeten" (Wetzer/W. VIII, 547). - Einband stärker lädiert, mit Wurmspuren und Fehlstellen im Deckel- und Rückenbezug. Innen etwas gebräunt; vereinzelt Wurmspuren in w. Rand. Am Titelblatt hs. Besitzvermerk "Hier[oni]mi Michaelii" (17. Jh.). The "Martyrologium romanum" was newly edited by Cardinal Baronius in 1584 after the calendar reforms of Pope Gregory XIII. The 1586 edition published in Rome is rare, as well, as the author had most copies called back after he had been made aware of mistakes owing to his poor command of Greek. He corrected the work and issued it once more in Antwerp in 1589, in Rome in 1598, and in Paris in 1607" (cf. Wetzer/W. I, 2038). Another edition of the uncorrected first version was printed in Venice in 1587 (cf . ibid. I, 181). This present Spanish translation by the Jesuit Dionysio Vazquez can only be a largely unknown version based on the uncorrected original and is illustrated with 12 little woocuts (one for each month). Extremely rare; only an incomplete copy in OCLC (Newberry Library; last f. supplied in ms.). Collation shows departures from Palau ([13], 278, [2] ff.), but complete without an index. Later editions (published until the 18th century) are probably based on the revised text. - Contemp. ms. ownership note "Juan Igancio de Fuentes" on t. p.; signature of the Spanish composer Joan Pacheco Montion ("maestro de catedral" in 1684; cf. The book was published "on the occasion of Albrecht of Brandenburg's creation as cardinal in honour of his defence of Christianity against the Turks, and the awarding of a sword and helmet-like fur cap, blessed by Pope Leo X on Christmas Day, to Emperor Maximilian through the hands of the Papal legates Cajetan and Lang" (cf. Musper). - The title woodcut shows an angel bearing the insignia of both these awards; the final woodcut shows Mennel's arms. - A clean and wide-margined copy. Rare; last at a German auction in 1964. Rare second Venetian edition of the first Hebrew Bible concordance (first published by Bomberg in 1523), with a new Latin dedication to Maggio Parentini. Words are arranged etymologically by roots and stems; the order of the books follows that of the Vulgate. The Arles-born Rabbi Isaac Nathan ben Kalonimus (fl. 1400-48) compiled the work commonly referred to as "Meir Nativ" ("Light of the Way") between 1437 and 1447 with the twofold aim to facilitate the study of Biblical exegesis and to keep Jews who had converted to Christianity from misquoting the Bible in religious controversies (cf. Jewish Encyclopaedia). Nathan himself moved in Christian scholarly circles and participated in theological disputations with his Christian colleagues. Notably, he based his present concordance on a work compiled by the Franciscan Arlotto de Prato. Occasionally (as here) the book is falsely attributed to Isaac's nephew Mordechai Nathan. - Text ruled in red throughout; the edges' yellow paint has seeped into the margins in places. Title page somewhat brownstained; a few corner defects early on, otherwise very clean and largely unbrowned. Ms. ownership of the Jesuit college at Chambéry (Savoy), dated 1585, on title (and repeated on last leaf but one); old stamp and long bibliographical note in French (c. 1900). Das erstmals 1544 posthum herausgegebene Rechtsbuch des bayerischen Juristen Perneder (um 1500-1543) wurde, mit immer neuen Anhängen vermehrt, zum führenden Lehrbuch seiner Zeit. "Perneders 'Halsgerichtsordnung' war bis in das 17. Jh. hinein die in Deutschland maßgebliche Strafrechtsordnung. Alle seine Schriften wurden seit 1544 nach teils ungenauen Abschriften und Manuskripten vom Ingolstädter Professor Wolfgang Hunger herausgegeben" (DBE). Die ADB zählt 21 Ausgaben dieser von Hunger mit Einleitungen versehenen "vielgebrauchtesten und besten Schriften popularisierender Richtung; sie sind [...] der erste Versuch eines in der Praxis wohlbewanderten Mannes, einheimisches und ausländisches Recht in einem der Legalordnung verwandten System zu verbinden" (ebd.). - Titel mit kl. Salviani, der die Totenrede als literarische Gattung pflegte, war es auch, der zwei Jahre später die Grabrede auf Michelangelo hielt. Am Schluß der vorliegenden Rede (gewidmet Giulio de' Medici) finden sich ein Sonett Salviatis auf Benedetto Varchi sowie ein Erwiderungssonett desselben auf den Verfasser. Der Humanist Varchi (1502-65) zählte ebenfalls zum Freundeskreis um Michelangelo und sollte nach seinem Tod gleichfalls mit einer Trauerrede Salviatis bedacht werden. - Etwas braunfleckig und im oberen Bug auch leicht wasserrandig. His polemics against Osiander, Heerbrand, and other Lutherans occasioned a long series of printed refutations. Scherer's writings prove that he was "ein rühriger, gewandter, schlagfertiger Schriftsteller [...] und sich zugleich durch einen für jene Zeit ganz vorzüglichen Stil auszeichnete [...] Darunter sind von bleibendem Werthe namentlich 'Neun und zwaintig Predigen ... von Notis, Merck- und Kenn-Zeichen der wahren und falschen Kirchen', eine gründliche, durchaus praktische, für das Volk leicht verständliche Abhandlung über die Kirche" (Wetzer/W.). Part 2 contains (at the end) the famous children's catechism. - Printed at the first and only 16th and 17th century press in Bruck an der Thaya (Louckem pod Znojmem) in Moravia, established in 1595 by abbot Sebastian II from Baden near Vienna. The printer was probably Bartholomäus Albert Fuhrmann; until the press was closed in 1608, it produced merely 22 known works. - Title page with contemp. ms. note by Johann Rupert Hegemüller, to whom the author himself had presented the volumes as a gift. Later in the collection of the Austrian local historian Candid von Engelshofen (1803-66; with his library stamp and shelfmark on title page); then in the library of the Bohemian nobleman Franz Graf Thun-Hohenstein (1809-70; with his heraldic bookplate on the front pastedown). Long contemporary Latin note on front flyleaf. Front pastedown has contemp. autogr. acquisition note by the Upper Palatinate jurist and Electoral councillor Wolfgang Haller (d. 1593; cf. The attractive binding, apparently created for Haller or personalized for him somewhat later with his initials and the year of acquisition, shows the Seven Liberal Arts (front: plate-stamp of Grammatica - Dialectica - Retorica - Arithmetic; back: Musica - Geometria - Astrologia: Haebler I, 459, plates VII and VI) within a roll-tooled border of generals; horizontal bars of front cover stamped "WHD" ("Wolfgang Haller Doctor") and "1571". The bookbinder "HVM", who used these plates according to Haebler, "probably worked in the border area between Baden und Wuerttemberg" (ibid., p. 460). Binding slightly rubbed; minute traces of worming to front cover; altogether very attractively preserved. Müller, 1548-1607). Die Stadt wehrt sich gegen die darin erhobenen Vorwürfe und rechtfertigt die Ausweisung des protestantischen Theologen: Mylius hatte sich, als Papst Gregor XIII. 1582 den gregorianischen Kalender verordnete und Augsburg aus Kaisertreue die Reform übernahm, an die Spitze der örtlichen protestantischen Widerstandsbewegung gestellt, die den neuen Kalender zumindest für das Kirchenjahr boykottierte. "Darüber erbost, ließ der [Augsburger] Senat [Mylius] durch Bewaffnete aus der Stadt bringen, aber die Bürger befreiten ihn und führten ihn im Triumph zurück. Doch wurde er gezwungen, am 28. Mai 1584 die Stadt zu verlassen. Mylius wandte sich nach Ulm, wo er freundliche Aufnahme fand [...] Im Juni 1585 [folgte er] einem Rufe als Prediger und Professor in Wittenberg" (ADB 23, 143). "25 Schülergespräche, die an Auflagenzahl, Kommentierungen und Übersetzungen gemessen, sich in ganz Westeuropa größter Beliebtheit erfreuten. [...] Das Werk ist Philipp II. gewidmet und soll Knaben zum Erlernen der lateinischen Sprache dienen, deren Kenntnis erst den Zugang zur Wissenschaft eröffne, wie es im Widmungsbrief des Verfassers heißt" (Brüggemann). Juan Luis Vives (1492-1540) war einer der berühmtesten spanischen Humanisten und Pädagogen; mit Erasmus und Budaeus bildete er das literarische Triumvirat seiner Zeit. 1523-28 war er Erzieher am Hof Heinrich VIII. von England und seit 1528 bis zu seinem Tode schriftstellerisch in Brügge tätig. "Seine Hauptbedeutung liegt in seinen pädagogischen Schriften. Im Allgemeinen lassen sich fast alle leitenden Principien der neuen Pädagogik auf Vives zurückführen, aber hoch überragt dieser die meisten Pädagogen durch die Betonung der Einheit von Unterricht und Erziehung" (Wetzer/W. XII, 1024ff.). - Die vorliegende Bearbeitung ist mit einem Kommentar und Worterklärungen (teils mit deutschen Übersetzungen) zu jedem Schülergespräch versehen von Johann Thomas Freige (1543-83), einem Philosophen und Anhänger des Ramus, geboren in Freiburg und längere Zeit in Basel tätig (vgl. ADB VII, 341ff.). Solche Kommentierungen waren für Vives' "Exercitatio" typisch: "Vives beabsichtigte mit seinem Werke, den Schülern für den gesamten Bereich des täglichen Lebens in Schule und Haus bis in die kleinsten Teile hinein mit den richtigen lateinischen Bezeichnungen an die Hand zu gehen, und er zog deshalb mit peinlicher Sorgfalt alle nur denkbaren Dinge und Verhältnisse in die Gespräche hinein. Wenn der Sprachschatz seiner Zeit erschöpft war, holte er neues Material aus den technischen Schriften der Alten; genügte das Lateinische nicht, so wurde das Griechische herangezogen und, wo auch dieses nicht ausreichte, zu neuen Bildungen nach der Analogie geschritten. Diese wohlanzuerkennende Absicht des Humanisten, eine möglichst weitgehende praktische Verwendung der lateinischen Sprache zu ermöglichen, brachte aber auch einen Vives nicht ohne Grund zum Vorwurf gemachten Uebelstand mit sich, dass nämlich die Lektüre der Schrift durch die fast erdrückende Fülle des Materials zu sehr erschwert wird. Later half calf with 18th-c. spine label. All edges sprinkled in red. First edition of Jost Amman's encyclopedic book of costumes. A strongly fragmented copy, as usual; in the early 19th century, the plates were mounted on backing paper by the owner, the trained landscape painter Jakob Linckh (1786-1841) from Stuttgart (cf. Thieme/B. 23, 254), who also coloured the volume throughout and supplemented all missing parts of the images and even of the text by hand. Linckh, who had studied in Rome, visited Greece in 1810. There he met Byron, who commissioned him to provide the illustrations for Hobhouse's travel book. - Wants 59 plates altogether; the remainder are trimmed closely at the upper edge, and most have severe defects in the lower half. Although the present collection begins with the plate showing the Emperor, as originally issued, the remaining woodcuts follow no apparent order. 20 plates show costumes of Turkey, Arabia, Persia, Egypt, and Ethiopia; others depict Greeks, Russians, and Englishmen. 28 plates show the costumes of today's Italy; German cities are well represented, as are France and Spain, Bohemia and Hungary. Also includes the famous picture of the Brazilian Tupinamba Indians: a man with a crown and belt of feathers, a knife, and a bow and arrow, beside a long-haired woman carrying a baby in a knotted sling. The illustration is an adaptation of two cuts from the "Recueil de la diversité des habits" (Paris, 1562; Antwerp, 1572) by Francois Descerpz, "one of the first likenesses of the Brazilian Indian" (Borba de Moraes). - Title page shows Jakob Linckh's autograph ownership (dated 1825); somewhat later stamped ownership of Anton Franzin (possibly the like-named Tyrolean law clerk, c. 1840) to flyleaf. An exceptionally fine work from the private press of Peter Apianus (1495-1552), mainly known as a mathematician and geographer. Title woodcut by Hans Brosamer (after Dürer) and Fugger's coat of arms (by M. Ostendorfer) splendidly hand-coloured and raised in gilt; undoubtedly the work of the book's previous owner, Johann Spiegler, who signs his name beneath the imprint on the title page ("Annumeror libris Joannis Spiegleri Juliomagensis"). Spiegler is known as a Constance miniaturist active during the first half of the 18th century (cf. Brun, SKL III, 1913) and is sometimes identified with the Constance painter Franz Joseph (Johann) Spiegler (1691-1757; cf. Thieme/Becker XXXI, 370f.). - Slight dampstains and edge tears near end; occasional paper loss remargined. The section "On the Reckoning of Time" (De temporum ratione) includes an introduction to the traditional ancient and medieval view of the cosmos, including an explanation of how the spherical earth influenced the changing length of daylight, of how the seasonal motion of the sun and moon influenced the changing appearance of the new moon at evening twilight, and a quantitative relation between the changes of the tides at a given place and the daily motion of the moon. "Ce volume contient les principaux traités de l'auteur sur le calendrier" (Houzeau/L.). Die beiden berühmten, nach Volcher Coiters Biographen Robert Herrlinger "vollends originell[en] und wegweisend[en]" Kinderskelett-Tafeln aus den "Externarum et internarum principalium humani corporis partium tabulae" (Nürnberg, 1572). Nachdem der jungverstorbene Mediziner Coiter (1534-76), ein in Nürnberg wirkender Friese, nach seiner Zeit in Italien an keiner Universität mehr lehrte, hatte das Werk zunächst nur einen sehr eingeschränkten Leserkreis, und seine "Auflage kann nicht groß gewesen sein" (Herrlinger, 57). Bei den hier vorliegenden Tafeln handelt es sich um "die ältesten bisher bekannten [Abbildungen] aus dem Gebiet der Embyrologie und Kinderanatomie. Es handelt sich um zwei große Falttafeln von über einem halben Meter Höhe [...] Die erste zeigt das Skelett eines halbjährigen Kindes von schräg vorne, die zweite von schräg hinten; auf dieser ist als 'Abb. 3' ein kleines Skelett einer dreimonatigen Fehlgeburt hinzugefügt [...] Alle Abbildungstafeln sind wie immer mit V.C.D. signiert. Wenn sie auch nicht völlig korrekt sind, so ist vor allem an den beiden großen Kinderskeletten bemerkenswert, wie Coiter versucht, in reiner Schwarz-Weiß-Technik Knorpel und Knochen als zwei verschiedene Materialien zu kennzeichnen: er punktiert den Knorpel und läßt den Knochen weiß. Noch heute ist diese Art der Knorpeldarstellung üblich [...] Coiters Kinderskelette haben Schule gemacht. Felix Platter bringt in seinem anatomischen Lehrbuch von 1583 ebenfalls, als zweiter, Kinderskelette, die ohne Coiter kaum denkbar sind [...] Wirklich neue, bessere Abbildungen vom foetalen und vom kindlichen Skelett gab erst Thomas Kerckring (1670). First edition. - Giasone De Nores (c. 1530-90), a friend of Paolo Manuzio, is best known for his criticism of Guarini's "Pastor Fido" (which, as he believed, offended Aristotelian poetic principles). His 1574 "Brief Treatise for the Orator" has a "clear and practical aim: it is addressed to the young heirs of noble Venetian families, that is, to those who will later practise the art of eloquence in politics and judicial administration. In order to enhance the efficacy of the work, he published with it an 'essay ... on the distinctions, definitions, and divisions of rhetoric articulated in multiple tables for easy classification'." (Lina Bolzoni, The Gallery of Memory. Toronto 2001, p. 34f.). Krüger führte die in Wittenberg noch häufiger nachgemachte Mode ein, mehrere Platten auf jeweils einer Deckelseite anzubringen - ein Verfahren, das beim Kleinoktav-Format des vorliegenden Bandes außer Betracht blieb. - Gelenke unbedeutend berieben; altes Bibliotheksetikett und Signaturvermerke am Titel. Die originale ziselierte Schließe intakt. Insgesamt prächtig erhaltener Wittenberger Kurfürsteneinband mit sehr prägnanter Prägung, darin ein Klassiker des Humanismus in einem Lyonnaiser Druck. Principal alchemical work of the Swiss physician, botanist and zoologist Gessner: the first complete German edition of the "Thesaurus de remediis secretis", translated by the Zürich theologian Johann Rudolf Landenberger and the physician Johann Jakob Nüscheler. The first part had appeared in German in 1555; only in 1569 did Caspar Wolf edit the posthumous Latin first edition of the second part, based on Gessner's notes. "This collection of recipes for medicines, the distillation of essential oils, and winemaking was first published under the pseudonym Euonymus Philiatrus because Gesner considered it not quite up to his own exact standards. It became his most popular book" (Wellisch). The woodcuts picture various destillation apparatus. - Binding rather rubbed; interior somewhat fingerstained; paper defects to the final three leaves of the index professionally restored (including portions of lost text). As always, the year of printing on the title page, stated as "1582" in Roman numerals, has been corrected to "1583" in slightly different ink. Part 1 contains the Greek text with Greek marginalia and Latin critical apparatus, part 2 contains the various Latin translations by Frischlin and the learned Estienne himself. - Binding very slightly warped and with insignificant chipping to extremeties. Interior somewhat browned as usual; some brownstaining near beginning. From the collection of the English scholar and football champion Harry Chester Goodhart (1858-95), legendary goal scorer for the Old Etonians in four FA Cup finals and then, until his early death, Professor of Humanities at Edinburgh (his engraved bookplate to front pastedown). Erste Ausgabe dieses mehrfach wiederaufgelegten Pionierwerks der französischen Patristikforschung und -kritik. Der Theologe Marguerin de la Bigne (um 1546-95) war Kanonikus von Bayeux und Doktor der Sorbonne. Er "unternahm eine zur leichteren Widerlegung der Magdeburger Centuriatoren längst gewünschte Sammlung aller Väter und Kirchenschriftsteller, soweit von einzelnen derselben nicht bereits größere Editionen vorlagen. Dieß ist die über 200 Schriftsteller enthaltende Bibliotheca" (Wetzer/W.). - Kaum gebräunt; Ecken bestoßen mit Fehlstellen im Bezug. Die hübschen, unterschiedlich beriebenen Einbände zeigen innerhalb einer Bogenfries- und einer Ornamentwerksrolle eine jeweils mit den Initialen "I.B." bezeichnete Tugendenrolle (Haebler I, 54: I.B., V, Nr. 1) sowie im Mittelfeld Crucifixus-, Auferstehungs-, Justitia- und Fortuna-Platten (z. B. Haebler I, 57: I.B. Varia, Nrn. I und II), außerdem Reichswappen und Porträtplatte Maximilians II. "Unter den Initialen I. B. verbergen sich ohne Zweifel eine ganze Anzahl von Druckern [und Bindern...] Das Nürnberger Meisterbuch verzeichnet als ersten Buchbinder vor Begründung der Innung den Joachim Bruck" (Haebler I, 51f.). Zeitgenöss. hs. Besitzvermerk am Kopf des Titels alt überklebt; Stempel der Haller Ritter-Waldauf-Bibliothek. Der kaiserliche Protonotar Florian Waldauf (auch: Baldauf; um 1450-1510; 1495 in Antwerpen Gegenzeichner des Vorvertrags zur habsburgisch-spanischen Doppelhochzeit) und seine Frau Barbara hatten 1501 der Pfarrkirche in Hall eine Marienkapelle, eine Reliquiensammlung und ein Predigtamt gestiftet. Die Stadt Hall als Verwalterin der Waldauf-Stiftung hatte dafür zu sorgen, "das alle jar etliche puecher nach anzaigen des predigers zum predigambt gekauft und in der heiligen capellen liberei an ketten gehangen und versorgt werden"; ferner sollten der Bibliothek Bücher aus den Nachlässen der Prediger und Meßkapläne zukommen. Entgegen der Anordnung Waldaufs wurde die Bibliothek kaum durch gezielte Ankäufe vermehrt, sondern größtenteils durch die zufällige Übernahme von Büchern und Schenkungen, hauptsächlich von Geistlichen, Stiften und Schülern. Der bekannteste Vorbesitzer ist Johannes Eck. "Nach 400 Jahren ihres Bestehens und nur fallweisem Zuwachs schien das Interesse am Fortbestand der Ritter-Waldauf-Bibliothek als geschlossener Sammlung verlorenzugehen. Obendrein war das Stiftungsvermögen im Ersten Weltkrieg vollends untergegangen. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde eine unbekannte Anzahl wertvoller Handschriften und Drucke an Privatpersonen in Hall und Umgebung ausgehändigt, um sie vor der Beschlagnahmung durch die Nationalsozialisten zu sichern. 4to. (16), 265, (1) pp. With a large woodcut on the title-page showing a gardener at work with his tools, and about 800 woodcut illustrations in the text. About 700 show trees, fruit, edible and medicinal plants, while the rest show insects, a tick, coral, shells, various sea and land animals and a view of a pond with plants and birds. It includes a two-headed snake, dragon, griffin, and a few other mythical creatures. With all woodcuts coloured by a contemporary hand. Contemporary pigskin over wooden boards, richly blind-tooled in a panel design with two rolls (one alternating heads and coats of arms, the other with standing figures), a large acorn and other stamps; brass clasps and catch-plates with engraved decoration. Rare first dated edition of an extensively illustrated early herbal in contemporary hand-colour, with the title and most of the plant and animal names in Latin and German. The title-page is followed by a 13-page index of the Latin and German names. About 200 of the woodcuts are about half-page, while the last six pages show 16 small animal woodcuts per page. The Folger Library notes that F. W. E. Roth attributes this herbal to Adam Lonicer (1528-86) of Marburg and Frankfurt, who married Egenolph's daughter and became a partner in the firm after Egenolph died in 1555. The firm published herbals and related works under his name beginning in 1551. Egenolph published all three editions of the present herbal. VD 16 lists the undated one as ca. 1545 (citing only the Wellcome Library copy), which would make the present 1546 edition the second. Another appeared in 1552. Egenolph's successors were to become famous not only as printers but also as one of the largest and most important early typefoundries. The present book uses Roman and Italic for the Latin, but Fraktur and Schwabacher for the German, giving a good overview of the firm's stock of type at this early date. - This copy has early owner's inscriptions by the Nuremberg pharmacist Georg Volland (d. 1631) in Latin at the foot of the title-page and in Greek on the facing endleaf. - Binding worn; some browning and stains to interior, especially to the first and last leaves. Seltenes Festgedicht auf die Geburt der Dorothea von Sachsen (1591-1617, später Äbtissin von Quedlinburg), Tochter des Christian I. von Sachsen und der Sophie von Brandenburg. Am Schluß ein dreiseitiges Gedicht auf das Erdbeben vom 5. September 1590, das Ostmitteleuropa von Österreich bis Sachsen erschütterte. - Der Theologe und Humanist Johann Major (1533-1600) aus St. Joachimsthal studierte in Wittenberg und wurde 1558 in Frankfurt am Main zum Poeta Laureatus gekrönt. "Die kryptocalvinistischen Streitigkeiten führten ihn auf die Seite der Philippisten, als deren eifriger Vertreter er die Lutheraner heftig befehdete, sein Spott erging sich gegen sie besonders in satirischen Gedichten [...] Wegen seiner beständigen Befehdung der Concordienformel verwies man ihn 1586 von der Wittenberger Universität. Dank dem in demselben Jahre eingetretenen Thronwechsel durfte er zwar wieder zurückkehren, wurde aber als Kryptocalvinist 1591 von neuem eingekerkert. 1593 erscheint er wieder auf freiem Fuße und verlebte seine letzte Lebenszeit als Privatmann" (ADB XX, 111). - Wohl einem altem Sammelband entnommen; am Titel alte hs.
