Corps de l’ouvrage en très bel état : belles marges, peu ou pas de rousseurs, petites salissures dans la marge sup. du frontispice, les deux planches dépliantes en parfait état & notamment la planche colorée de M. Gautier-Dagoty aux teintes éclatantes. Edition séparée, du troisième volume « Du Monde Primitif (1773- 82, 9 vol. in-4) », augmentée de la planche colorée de Gautier-Dagoty, dont l’Explication des figures fut rédigée par M. Dessault, chirurgien à Paris. Elle est considérée comme originale car elle reparue en 1816, à Paris chez Plancher, sous le nouveau titre « Histoire naturelle de la parole, ou grammaire universelle, à l'usage des jeunes gens. Bound at the Stinehour Press in full silver-gray Dutch natural finish cloth, stamped in blue and blind. Original glassine wraps. Original blue paper covered cloth slipcase. The beautiful endpaper designs and slipcase decorations are reproduced from original paste papers designed by Carol Blinn. Copy number 1848 of and edition limited to 2,000 numbered copies signed by the photographer, Richard Benson. "Bright, volatile, short-lived and hard-drinking, Crane was in some ways an archetype of the Roaring Twenties author. Crane is best known for The Bridge (1930), an epic vision of American life with the Brooklyn Bridge as a central image. Crane is often compared to Walt Whitman, both for his modern American sensibilities and for the homoerotic imagery some find in his work. In sheer style Crane also resembled T.S. Eliot, whom he admired. Crane committed suicide by leaping from the S.S. Orizaba in 1932. Slipcase has some soiling on the top and bottom edge. There is also a small (less than 1/2") loss of colored paper in the lower corner of the slipcase. A brilliantly photo illustrated work. It would make a great gift. W37

Sans lieu [Corbeil-Essonnes], [Imprimerie Creté], sans date [circa 1935] In-8 - 15,5 x 23,5 cm. Reliure de l'imprimeur-éditeur en pleine toile métis beige, dos lisse et muet, premier plat titré à froid en bistre. 447 pp. Rare catalogue, sans page de titre, regroupant des exemples de textes imprimés avec des caractères utilisés par Creté, dans les séries numérotées 2, 10, 17, 20, 50, 68, 158, 170, 3, 1, 18, 25, 26, 27, 44, 46, 65, 71, 111, 169, 82, ainsi que le Bodoni, le Cheltenham, le Sphinx, le Cochin, le Della Robia, le Gill, l'Europe, le Rockwell, le Grotesque, et divers (antiques, latin noir, devinnes, elzévir,...). In-fine, les sections "chiffres pour catalogues" et "vignettes et filets", ainsi qu'une table des matières. On joint une brochure de 4 feuillets intitulée "Spécimen de nos caractères lino", de chez Schiffer (56, passage du Caire, Paris 2e), qui propose de la composition linotype à façon. Véritable institution à Corbeil, l'imprimerie Creté porte le nom de du fondateur d'une dynastie d'imprimeurs-éditeurs qui acquit en 1827 une entreprise installée d'abord rue de la Poterie. Louis-Simon Creté achète également le journal départemental "L'Abeille de Seine-et-Oise", obtient le brevet de maître-imprimeur en 1829 et transfère son établissement de l'autre côté de la Seine, dans l'impasse Notre-Dame, jusqu'en 1842, où il s'établit définitivement dans la rue des Petites Bordes. Le patriarche est l'un des premiers imprimeurs à employer des femmes dans la composition. Son fils Jules lui succède et participe activement à la vie locale, d'abord comme conseiller municipal à l'aube de la Troisième République, puis en tant que maire de Corbeil, en 1878. A sa mort, en 1899, son fils Edouard a pris la direction d'une usine prospère, comptant 500 ouvriers et équipée de 4 rotatives traitant la couleur, d'un atelier de brochage et de photogravure. L'imprimerie connaît son apogée entre les années 1920 et 1970, forte d'un effectif de plus de 2 000 employés et occupant une place majeure dans les secteurs du Livre et de la Presse française, Devenue Hélio Corbeil en 1998, suite à de multiples crises, rachats et changements de noms, l'imprimerie s'est amplement transformée à partir de la structure familiale initiale, mais le patronyme Creté, aujourd'hui accolé à un boulevard, reste dans les mémoires des habitants de Corbeil.

br. Melchiorre Sessa e i suoi eredi furono, prima di tutto e in senso pieno, editori. La loro attività si estendeva sui due versanti dell'editoria, quello della produzione e quello della vendita dei libri. Da una parte erano attenti agli autori, ai testi e alla loro resa tipografica, in una parola alla formazione del catalogo, anche grazie ad accordi con altri tipografi più di loro versati in particolari tipi di testi. Sul versante delle vendite i Sessa si inserirono con efficacia su una rete commerciale già ben consolidata che, partendo da Venezia, consentiva di far giungere ogni sorta di mercanzie in tutta Italia. Dobbiamo, pertanto, essere grati a Silvia Curi Nicolardi che, in anni di continuo lavoro in archivi, biblioteche e ultimamente anche sulla rete, ha costruito questa bella macchina di documentazione e di analisi delle edizioni di Melchiorre Sessa, cui possiamo d'ora in poi attingere con grande profitto per la conoscenza della sua produzione editoriale, specchio fedele della vita e della cultura veneziana e italiana del Cinquecento.

In-4° grande (cm. 37x26), pp. 45, (2) con copertina incisa litograficamente in tonalità seppia su disegno di MAUZAN, cm. 25,5x18,7 al filo della lastra. Frontespizio xilografico in rosso e nero illustrato e ornato (cane che morde il cavallo alato Pègaso), occhiello delle "note all'azione" illustrato da xilografia in rosso e nero (braciere a forma di nave sospesa appeso a un'architrave sorretta da elefanti e irraggiante verso il,basso). 5 TESTATE xilogr. in rosso e nero (città in fiamme, Etna eruttante, drammi ed eroiche figure) e 5 FINALINI (tra cui uno col gigantesco mostro). Il testo dannunziano è tutto in caratteri maiuscoli. Cartoncino leggero editorial. Il libro è perfetto, legato da fettuccia color avorio passante al dorso e munito della lussuosa sovraccoperta in pergamino muto ricccamente ornato. La sola sovraccoperta reca tracce del tempo (fessure alle pieghe, usure ai margini, fessura al dorso, ma il libro è immacolato in carta di pregio nelle sue barbe. Da NON confondere con analoghe edizioni in-8° o in 16°, questa edizione grande di gran lusso è introvabile.

In folio. pp (2), 38, un rame al frontespizio “dominicus muratori inv. et delin. Vincen. Franceschini scul.”, nel testo da indisegni di Muratori e incisi da Rossi, Limpach, Allet, 6 vignette incise su rame come testatine e finalini e un capolettera. Contiene gli elogia a Maria Clementina in diverse lingue: ebraico, graco, arabo, siriaco, armeno, caldaico, copto, polacco, gotico, illirico, ecc ecc. Legatura in piena pelle con cornice dorata ai piatti e decorazioni in oro al dorso.

Edizione originale. Esemplare nella «Serie a», senza indicazione di numero, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Raro: Iccu localizza solo 4 esemplari. «[...] lo fa stampare a sue spese dalle Arti Grafiche fratelli Magnani di Milano con una carta speciale in alcune centinaia di esemplari ai quali non viene applicato neppure il numero progressivo» (Magrì). -- Curiosa opera sul gioco d’azzardo a mezzo tra il trattato e la memorialistica. «Non esiste possibilità in se stessa, ma solo esiste un limite alla comprensione dell’uomo [...] Lo scopo dal quale ci sentiamo animati nello scrivere un ‘Trattato delle possibilità impossibili’ non è quello di offrire al nostro prossimo un nuovo procedimento per smantellare i Casinos leggendari, dalle cupole dorate. Eppure abbiamo dato al nostro libro anche un sottotitolo: ‘L’Arte di vincere al giuoco’; ed è questa una possibilità, che dalla scienza dei matematici venne ritenuta impossibile. Ma il giuocatore a noi [...] appare come quegli che più direttamente si trova in lotta con l’Inconoscibile, mentre accanitamente perseguita, ed è perseguitato, da quel fantasma di tutti i calcoli — supremo ed universale Dio della vita — cui si è dato il nome di Azzardo» (pp. 8-9). Degne di nota alcune scelte tipografiche, dall’impaginazione ‘a colophon’ del testo in copertina e frontespizio, al sottotitolo abbreviato in «etc.», alle testatine che suddividono il titolo completo in quattro pagine («Il trattato delle» - «Possibilità impossibili» - «Con l’arte» - «Di vincere al giuoco»). [Tipografia-Raro] (cm. 17,3) ottima piena pergamena originale, con tracce di lacci e unghie. Cuffia e un angolino ben restaurati.-- cc. 12 nn., cc. 573. Elegante carattere rotondo e corsivo. Opera vasta e ricca di erudizione più volte ristampata. Manca ad Adams e Bm. Stc. e a molta bibliografia consultata. E' la prima di due uniche edizioni (1583-1584) stampate da Zaltieri Marcantonio in società con Zanetti Michele. Pastorello "Tipografi a Venezia" n° 471/1, appunto conosce 2 sole edizioni dei due in società e Ascarelli-Menato "Tipografia del 500" p. 397 accenna a questa breve società fra i due tipografi. Circa la marca tipografica al frontis, è sempre uno struzzo, ma diversa da quella riprodotta da Zappella fig. 1149 e da Ascarelli-Menato fig. 515, si tratta di una variante non nota. Qualche lieve ombreggiatura ma esemplare bello, nitido e genuino. al frontis antico ex libris manoscritto: ".di Fr. Giuseppe della pieve di S. Stefano." (Arezzo) e alla sguardia in grafia coeva: "Usu F. Franc. brunetti Biturgensis Minor. conv." (di Sansepolcro).[f46] Libro
