Tight attractive issue of this Rome-based academic journal of philology almost entirely in Italian with a bit of English. Contributor's copy bearing the name/address Milan inkstamp on front flyleaf of Ioan Petru Culianu or Couliano 1950-91 the controversial Romanian philosopher essayist and historian of ideas religion and culture. On May 21 1991 he was murdered -- some say assassinated -- in a bathroom at the University of Chicago's Divinity School likely because he proved a vocal critic of Romania's Communist post-Revolution regime in interviews and articles. His article "Note Sur Opsis et Theoria Dans la Poesie d'Eminescu" appears on pp. 93-98 where laid in are three photocopies of another unidentified Couliano journal article. Quite unusual. One fold-out plate facsimile of a letter in 1660 and eight other facsimiles as plates. Contemporary brown calf-leather; spine and corners. Marbled boards. Indexed. Spines with slight wear; strong and soundly bound. VERY GOOD. Very scarce as a complete set. Referenced by: Smith I 983. LUKE HOWARD FRS 1772-1864 was a British manufacturing chemist and an amateur meteorologist with broad interests in science. His lasting contribution to science is a nomenclature system for clouds which he proposed in an 1802 presentation to the Askesian Society. He was born in London the son of Robert Howard a lamp manufacturer and educated at the Quaker school in Burford Oxfordshire. He was a Quaker later converting to the Plymouth Brethren and became a pharmacist by profession. After serving an apprenticeship with a pharmacist in Stockport Cheshire he set up his own pharmacy in Fleet Street in 1793. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1821. He spent the years 1824 to 1852 in Ackworth Yorkshire West Riding . He died in Tottenham London. He had married Mariabella Eliott 1769-1852; they had several children including John Eliot Howard FRS chemist and botanist. 8vo. An unbroken run of the first 16 years of this semi-annual journal from the first issue in 1989 to 2004. The Journal of the History of Collections is a scholarly journal "dedicated to the investigation and documentation of all aspects of collecting activity". The range of subject-matter treated in the Journal is wide encompassing everything from the earliest universal collections to highly-specialized ones. Equally collections of all periods are covered from the Renaissance 'cabinets de curiosites' to 20th century collections; there have been occasional articles too on both medieval and Roman period collections. The approach is cross-disciplinary with the object of making papers in what may be specialized subjects accessible to a broad readership of non-specialists : 'it is well known that the mechanisms of collecting and classification developed in natural history for example came to influence practices amongst collectors and curators in the fine arts and in ethnography hence every opportunity is taken here to illustrate and to illuminate the common ground that exists between all those whose researches were founded on material collections.' The Journal regularly commissions reviews by established scholars of publications that have appeared within its subject-area as well as occasional reviews of exhibitions rendering it the most comprehensive source available on a subject of increasing interest and study. An excellent and rarely-seen run of the first 21 years' issues of the New Arcadian Journal lacking only volume 14 The Atlantic Wall 1995. Well-produced but in an unfussy style the NAJ is an important and original contribution to garden and landscape history The publisher's description is that it "investigates the cultural politics of historical landscapes by scrutinising their architecture gardens monuments sculpture and inscriptions. By championing the study of political gardening and by promoting restoration of place and meaning the New Arcadian Journal has shed new light on historical landscapes and has also been the catalyst to contemporary re-interpretation and conservation." In a notice in Parenthesis Jack Chesterman enthused that "the New Arcadian Press promotes and supports texts and images of great passion humour intelligence engrossing uses of language and much visual dexterity and wit."The New Arcadian Press has through its Journals produced a I remarkable body of work winch enables us to see our man-made and natural landscapes with new eyes and insights. The New Arcadian writers and artists do not seek to prettify or demystify their subjects but through scholarly and creative responses tell us more about them. The Journals are decidedly not ‘Heritage' based or ‘National Trust' inclined although both these agencies may recognise the depth of knowledge and understanding contained within these publications so much of whose material predates their own current concerns." Starting life as a quarterly in 1981 the Journal eventually settled into annual publication in 1988 with issues from 1990 being double-numbers.
