The Clan Chattan Association is a confederation of highland clans. 2pp 4to. In fair condition lightly aged with slight creasing to one corner and rust staining from paperclip. Folded twice for postage. Addressed to MP’s London address in Coventry Street. ‘I’ve heard about your James MacQueen. His name appears in quite a few locally published papers &c. on Culloden. His new teeth are quite famous up here.’ He accepts the proposal for an article: ‘if you could go to 900-1000 words I’d be happy’. He reports: ‘Our President - The Mackintosh has just been returned unopposed as representative of the parish of Moy & Dalarossie on Inverness County Council. He was also the other day commissioned as a Deputy Lieutenant. / During the last two years of the Home Guard I commanded a platoon - about 300 strong! - located outside Inverness and mostly in the Mackintosh country’. He names locations adding: ‘I had a big number of MacQueen’s in the platoon. About half dozen in the Farr section were very strict Wee Frees and wouldn’t turn out to drill on the “Sabbath†our chief day for drills!’ He continues with reference to ‘a coast defence battery’ he recruited and ends with reference to his recent ill-health. 3 May 1952; on letterhead of the Clan Chattan Association, The Castle, Inverness, Scotland. unknown

Cyril Clemens editor of the Mark Twain Journal. Typed Letter Signed to military historian Barrie Pitt informing him of his election as 'A Knight of Mark Twain'. With photocopy of letter from Winston Churchill to Clemens inscribed to Pitt.
Clemens' letter to Pitt is dated 5 May 1978. On his letterhead as editor of the Mark Twain Journal Kirkwood Missouri. The photocopy is of a Churchill letter dated from 10 Downing Street 25 October 1943. ONE: Typed Letter Signed from Clemens to Pitt. In good condition with light signs of age and wear. Expansive signature in blue ink. Letterhead with printed quotations from President Ford Carl Van Doren William Faulkener Lyndon B. Johnson John F. Kennedy and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Message reads: 'Dear Barrie Pitt In recognition of your outstanding contribution to Biography you have been unanimously elected in succession to the late Captain Basil Liddell Hart A KNIGHT of MARK TWAIN'. TWO: Photocopy of letter from Churchill to Clemens. In fair condition with creasing and wear to one edge. Inscribed at head 'To Barrie Pitt a great Englishman Who may not have known that M.T. took the Chair Greetings fm Mark's Kinsman Cyril Clemens'. Photocopy of a Churchill letter expressing his 'thanks to the International Mark Twain Society for their Gold Medal which has been handed to me by Mr. Philip Guedalla'. Churchill recalls that Twain showed him 'much kindness when I visited New York as a young man by taking the Chair at my first public lecture and by autographing copies of his works which still form a valued part of my library'. Part of the photocopy is a note by Clemens at the foot of the page stating that Churchill joined the Society on 14 July 1927 'and always took a keen intrerest in its activities'. THREE: Carbon copy of typed letter from Pitt to Clemens 25 May 1978 expressing thanks at the 'honour just bestowed upon me' and referring to his 'old mentor and most generous friend Captain Sir Basil Liddell Hart'. Each issue HAS A FINE DECORATIVE COVER PRESERVED HERE. PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED. MANY IN COLOR. Contributors included Bialik Lissitzky Chagall Tchernichovsky Nathan Altman and others many of the Jewish-Russian Avantgarde. This YIDDISH language journal published in BERLIN between 1922-1924 was dedicated to Jewish arts and literature and unique in its paper and printing quality. It served as a parallel publication to the Hebrew edition "Rimon" but varied in the literary content which was edited by the famous Yiddish writers Dovid Bergelson and Der Nister. The initiators of this exquisite production were Dr. Mark Wischnitzer and his wife famous art historian RACHEL BERNSTEIN-WISCHNITZER who had joined a group of Russian-Jewish intellectuals immigrants in Berlin with multi-lingual literary needs. Text in yiddish except for the additional content page in each issue which is in German for the first issue and in English for all the others issues. George F. Parker Public Relations Substantial Autograph Letter Signed "George F. Parker" to "Mrs Pike" about her "little" book about her brother and her satisfying lifestyle.
Headed Westwood 245 London Road Croydon 20 August 1903. Three pages 12mo good condition closely written. He commends her on "the little book about her brother" which he couldn't put down. "It is a most interesting record of a most interesting man. If I should make any criticism at all it would be that it did not go quite fully enough into those close relations which your late brother maintained with the miserable and the unhappy nor give a sufficiently complete account of the individual instances of which I always heard from so many quarters during my long residence in Birmingham . his incessant labours on behlf of men. " He then goes on to characterise HER life "Pleasant and cheerful" in spite of advancing years and "undeserved misfortunes" listing her reasons to feel blessed including "how comforting it is to have certail literary tastes which promote resourcefulness and make ennui underlined impossible. He hopes this state of happiness continues. He congratulates her on her "choice of American friends" which paralles his choice of English." Columbus: Ohio State Journal Company 1854. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very good-. Octavo 135pp. illustrated. This is the second edition published two years after the first and certainly the better one being the first to contain the numerous tinted lithographed plates. About very good in the publisher's blind-tooled red cloth with gilt detail on the spine. Some inartful but not disfiguring coloring-in to some chipped areas on the spine extremities. This copy lacking the folding frontispiece and one plate "View of Morrow from the South" but otherwise complete and with five plates not noted in the list of illustrations all in the Cleveland area "Cleveland Station" "West Branch Rocky River Near Olmsted Station" "East Branch Rocky River Berea Station" "Elk Creek" and "Grand River Near Painesville Station". The list of illustrations calls for 28 plates including the map. While we have 26 of the 28 the 5 extra yield a total of 31 plates. Thus while incomplete still a desirable and very "Cleveland" copy of this important image-driven guide for rail travelers in Ohio. The author goes on tangents for example spending more than two pages discussing the general history of the Mormons as the guide passes through Kirtland but these digressions seem to be in some sense the point--offering diversion to the weary traveler. Large tabloid-style newspaper measuring about 14" x 19.5" and unfolding to about 28" x 19.5". 4pp. In very good or better condition with old folds and creases but quite bright and clean. Tongue-in-cheek humor newspaper meant for Harvard students published in "Shamebridge Mess." Loaded with inside jokes and some topical humor of the period along with several "articles" and "advertisements" which play up the "ladies' journal" theme ostensibly advertising corsets and the like even though the intended audience was mostly male. Since the very top of the front panel reads "Extra!" it is possible that this was a supplement to an issue of the Harvard Lampoon or a similar magazine but OCLC records zero holdings in worldwide libraries including Harvard. Presumably quite scarce and of interest to any Harvard enthusiast. [no publisher given, likely a Harvard club] unknown
