‎Jazz Journal Archive‎

‎Complete Run of Jazz Journal Includes Louis Armstrong Coleman Hawkins and Baby Dodds Fats Waller Earl Hine Archive 1950‎

‎1950. Complete 1950 run of Jazz Journal Vol. 3 Nos. 1-12. London: L. M. Publications 1950. Complete run of the 1950 volume. Twelve issues with each issue around 20 pages. Black-and-white photo illustrations throughout. Printed paper wraps. Founded in 1948 by editor Sinclair Traill Jazz Journal became a critical platform for serious jazz criticism in Britain at a time when the country began appreciating the impact of African American musical innovation. This volume features twelve monthly issues each spotlighting legendary musicians in deeply reverent portraits: Louis Armstrong Baby Dodds Coleman Hawkins Fats Waller Earl Hines and others. The December cover has a Christmas theme.<br /> <br /> This archive is a window into Britain's postwar jazz awakening. The articles range from retrospectives to musicology and artist discographies. Floyd Levin's "The American Jazz Scene" captures the transatlantic tone of the journal mourning the death of Buster Wilson and lauding figures like Sidney Anderson and Kid Ory as vanguards of "authentic" jazz-framed as endangered in a postwar America increasingly seduced by commercialism. Meanwhile Derrick Stewart-Baxter's "Preachin' the Blues" traces rural-to-urban migration patterns in blues development analyzing Sleepy John Estes' discography and folk influences. The December issue features a full-page bibliophilic essay "A Case for Books" reviewing A Treasury of the Blues by W. C. Handy whom it names "the composer of the classic Memphis Blues and Joe Turner Blues" emphasizing the book's role in preserving "the true and historical survey of the blues." Taken together the essays discographies and image curation construct a coherent theory of jazz not only as music but as cultural heritage. Moderate and consistent soiling and creasing to wrappers; binding intact but some covers remain delicate. Occasional chipping at spine. Covers remain vivid with strong photographic contrasts. Overall good condition. A complete year's run of one of the earliest and most influential British jazz journals with signatures from leading musicians of the era such as Armstrong Dodds and Hawkins. unknown‎

‎19th c Journal Poetry and Poems‎

‎Early American Woman's Family Poetry and Prayer Journal 1820-1830‎

‎1820. Tuckerman H. P. Poetry and prayer journal 1820-1830 documents early nineteenth-century manuscript album culture within Anglo-American Protestant communities with particular attention to women's devotional writing moral instruction and shared literary practices. The volume supports research into gendered authorship religious education and the circulation of poetic and didactic texts in the early republic where handwritten albums functioned as spaces for communal inscription. The presence of multiple hands across dated entries demonstrates a participatory literary culture structured around kinship and social networks while recurring themes of childhood piety mortality and moral virtue situate the text within contemporary evangelical and didactic traditions.<br /> Tuckerman H. P. Poetry and prayer journal. Circa 1820-1830. Manuscript volume with 53 handwritten entries by multiple contributors including poems hymns and devotional reflections. Entries include a hymn composed for the British and Foreign School Society emphasizing education and moral uplift through the metaphor "Oh stream of knowledge when thy tides.Forget not then the flowers" alongside gendered moral instruction concluding "woman's Happiest destiny Is only - to be good." Biblical passages including references to Luke 2 appear throughout accompanied by original prayers such as an 1827 entry: "Heaven sees no sight so fair As happy childhood bowed in prayer." Several texts address mortality and impermanence including reflections such as "Life is but a scanty ledge.suspended o'er a fathomless abyss" and a memorial poem introduced as written by a young man shortly before death from consumption invoking Romantic-era associations with illness and artistic sensibility. Additional entries focus on natural landscapes including "Spring Mountain" 1828 which situates spiritual reflection within pastoral imagery. The volume includes an original drawing of a mother and child signed "S. Tuckerman" as well as two pencil drawings of forest scenes reinforcing the integration of visual and literary expression within album practices.<br /> This manuscript emerges from a period in which evangelical Protestantism moral education movements and literary cultivation intersected within domestic and semi-public spheres particularly among women and youth. The reference to the British and Foreign School Society situates the volume within transatlantic educational reform efforts emphasizing literacy and moral discipline. The collaborative nature of the entries aligns with early nineteenth-century album traditions where social exchange and authorship were intertwined. Such materials provide insight into how religious belief gender norms and literary expression were internalized and reproduced within everyday practice. Original red half morocco binding with owner's name "H. P. Tuckerman" in gilt on front cover; approximately 120 pages with writing on 76 pages; includes three original drawings; measures 9 x 7 1/2 inches. ‎Handwritten 1818 Commonplace Book Offers a Detailed View into Everyday life two hundred years Ago "Of all the tyrannies on humankind the worst is that which persecutes the mind.‎

‎1818. Americana Handwritten 1818 commonplace book. 38 handwritten pages 6" x 4." England. While the writer of this book remains unnamed flipping through the pages offers an intimate look into their thoughts ideas and reading habits. Writings in this book range from the political "The paper money system is a system of murder as well as robbery" to the thoughtful "An artichoke and a pineapple have the same shape but what a difference in flavor!" to the biting "Women have such a tedious manner of telling a story." The latter half of the book is entitled "Memorandum" and appears to be mostly concerned with matters of business. There quotes and verses of poems that the writer found inspiring such as an excerpt from Voltaire: "The art of instructing succeeds better than the art of lampooning because satire dies with those who are its victims but.virtue is immortal." Other excerpts include "The universe appeared as a vault wherein true comfort was entombed; and the sun himself as a lamp to show the gloomy horror of a guilty mind." "One of the Roman emperors sent to buy the pillow of a man that was greatly in debt yet could sleep sweetly." "Of all the tyrannies on humankind the worst is that which persecutes the mind." "Many prose writers dislike wit as eunuchs dislike love." "On Monday evening Mr. Brougham is reported to have made a motion for the diminution of the influence of the crown in a speech which the Times calls the greater parliamentary effort this __. If instead of the greatest the Times had called it the longest that judicious paper would have been for once right.we have heard that the hon. member spoke for three hours & a half." Fascinating journal that offers a detailed view into everyday life two hundred years ago. Delicate pages are intact with expected tanning. Cover is loose from the book with a large stain to blank area. Otherwise very good condition. unknown‎

Anna moved into the White House with her children after this first divorce. ‎Yalta Crimea: April; 13 1945. Silver print. French text on separate sheet pasted to verso. Photographer's stamp verso. 18 x 13 cm. Published the day after FDR's death. .The Yalta Conference took place in a Russian resort town in the Crimea from February 4–11 1945 during World War Two. At Yalta U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin made important decisions regarding the future progress of the war and the postwar world.World Leaders at the Yalta Conference. The Allied leaders came to Yalta knowing that an Allied victory in Europe was practically inevitable but less convinced that the Pacific war was nearing an end. Recognizing that a victory over Japan might require a protracted fight the United States and Great Britain saw a major strategic advantage to Soviet participation in the Pacific theater. At Yalta Roosevelt and Churchill discussed with Stalin the conditions under which the Soviet Union would enter the war against Japan and all three agreed that in exchange for potentially crucial Soviet participation in the Pacific theater the Soviets would be granted a sphere of influence in Manchuria following Japan’s surrender. This included the southern portion of Sakhalin a lease at Port Arthur now Lüshunkou a share in the operation of the Manchurian railroads and the Kurile Islands. This agreement was the major concrete accomplishment of the Yalta Conference. Yalta, Crimea: April; 13, 1945 unknown‎

‎President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 21-year-old John Roosevelt causes an altercation with Mayor Pierre Nouveau of Cannes in 1937. Original photograph.‎

‎Cannes France: Aug. 19 1937. Silver print. French text on verso. Photographer's stamp verso. 18 x 13 cm.Shows John leaving a taxi in Paris after causing the following contetemps in Cannes. . Time Magazine: Monday Aug. 30 1937.This took place at Cannes France whose Mayor Pierre Nouveau almost created an international incident by his description of the conduct of 21-year-old John Roosevelt the President's youngest son at Cannes' "Battle of Flowers.".Mayor Nouveau spying John Roosevelt—or his spitting image—going past in an open carriage hurried down from his reviewing stand to give the city's distinguished guest a handsome bouquet and an eloquent French welcome. The lad picked up a bottle of champagne from the carriage floor squirted it full in his beaming face. While the gushing stream coursed down over the mayor's best suit of clothes the gay youngster taking the Battle of Flowers in too literal a sense seized the proffered bouquet and brought it down vigorously on the donor's head. M. Nouveau's emotions were inexpressible.Only notable misdemeanors of John Roosevelt have been arrests for speeding breaking photographers' cameras. In Paris where he went the evening after the Battle of Flowers Son John sought the diplomatic advice of his father's friend Ambassador William C. Bullitt then explained to the press that he had indeed attended the Cannes fete in a carriage put at his disposal by the proprietor of his hotel but had not attacked the mayor remembered nothing of the incident. Said he: ''I never met the mayor of Cannes. There were no speeches. I don't know anything about it. . . . It certainly must have been somebody else. . . .".Meanwhile in Cannes Mayor Nouveau reiterated his story: ". . . I regret to say I am certain now it was Mr. Roosevelt." Upshot of the Cannes Battle of Flowers was a deluge of French editorials night-club skits and radio songs; in the U. S. a comment by John Roosevelt's mother:"I am sure John told the truth about it when he said he didn't do it. because I have never known him to tell anything but the truth. He is one of the most dignified of my children. He never did any such thing at home and I can't imagine him doing any such thing abroad. If it happened. I am sure he didn't know the identity of the mayor. It is a perfectly understandable thing for any youngster to do in such a fete where everyone was throwing flowers and celebrating if he didn't know who the mayor was.".
