<p>Edinburgh: For the Members of the Royal Association for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in Scotland. 1860. First edition with a suite of proof engravings. Signed and inscribed by the artist. Folio. Publisher's original green pebble-grained cloth with decorative borders and titles in gilt to the upper board. Inscribed "Proof before letters" in pencil to the front pastedown. Illustrated with 6 fine proof engravings. A good copy the binding secure with splitting to the joints at the head and foot a few marks to the boards and wear to the corners. The contents with cracking to the hinges at front and rear some faint creasing to page edges and some occasional light scattered foxing are otherwise in good order. Signed and inscribed by Joseph Nöel Paton in ink to the head of the title page "To Miss Fergus / with all good wishes of / J. Nöel Paton / Jan. 1861". A beautifully illustrated edition of this Scottish border ballad of conflict love and loss with six full-page engravings by the Scottish artist illustrator and sculptor Sir Joseph Nöel Paton 1821-1901.</p><p>Initially studying at the Dunfermline Art Academy Paton spent most of his life in Scotland although did briefly attend the Royal Academy London in 1843. Whilst there Paton met John Everett Millais who asked him to join the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He declined this offer despite his continuing to paint in the Pre-Raphaelite style and became a painter of historical fairy and allegorical subjects. Paton also had a great interest - and significant expertise - in the fields of Scottish folklore and Celtic legend frequently choosing to paint or illustrate these subjects. His edition of 'The Dowie Dens O' Yarrow' clearly demonstrates this typically combining his Pre-Raphaelite tendencies with his love of Scottish history and culture.</p><p>The present copy - likely presented to a friend or patron - contains a wonderfully sharp suite of proof engravings and uncommonly is inscribed by Paton himself.</p> [Edinburgh]: For the Members of the Royal Association for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in Scotland. hardcover

A good autograph letter signed 4-sides 8vo 80-lines approx. 450 words to "My dear Sir".
He writes that he has been unwell and that he is "allowed to work no more than four hours a-day; a matter of much vexation and disappointment overwhelmed as I am with half completed works of every description" and continues by mentioning Puck and that he has made a "rough draft of 'A Night Mail' to the scale of the first edition but I can without much difficulty reduce it 'on the block'.As regards the business part of the transaction I have a.great aversion to money dealings between myself and any person I desire to regard as a friend.we will then.put filthy lucre out of court" and continues by stating that whereas he would without hesitation take money from a publisher "but from a private individual I cannot accept payment for such a thing as an illustration of your poem" and continues "your Symposium I should doubtless have enjoyed but I must in honesty assure you my presence could in no way have promoted 'the flow of Sole' which no doubt took place on the occasion." etc. unknown

Autograph letter signed to the Art Director of Messrs Cassell Petter & Galpin concerning corrected proofs. 33 George Square Edinburgh 4 October 1879. 2 pages on a bifolium written in ink and signed by Noel Paton. Old fold show-through from ink otherwise very good. Accompanied by a contemporary portrait photograph of Paton albumen print c. 1870s-80s c. 165 x 110 mm captioned in a contemporary hand Sir Noel Paton and mounted to card. Paton writes following his return from the Highlands acknowledging receipt of two proofs and noting that he has marked and returned one by return of post requesting that he be informed what enquiries may be made. He also refers to retaining one proof and to corrections required. The letter is routine publishing correspondence showing the working relationship between artist and publisher. Sir Joseph Noel Paton 1821-1901 Scottish painter and illustrator was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite circle and later served as Queen's Limner for Scotland. Messrs Cassell Petter & Galpin were among the leading illustrated publishers of the later nineteenth century issuing numerous literary and popular works requiring engraved plates and proofs for correction. .
