The Land of Green Ginger
Puffin Books 1977. Book. Illus. by Edward Ardizzone. Very Good. Hardcover. First Thus. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Light brown cloth-effect boards lettered in gold foil. Both covers show faint surface spotting foxed endpapers and adjacent blanks and text block edges otherwise only slight actual wear. Color illus. dust jacket Near Fine presents well just a hint of shelf wear with foxed flaps now in mylar. 1977 printing of the 1966 version rewritten from the 1937 first edition; all versions are quite scarce. 197 pp. illus. Langley was possibly better-known owing to the initial success of this novel as one of the screenwriters hired in the same year that it was published to adapt L. Frank Baum's Wonderful Wizard of Oz to film; his treatment includes a number of story elements that remained in the finished film such as creating farmhand characters in the sepia opening scenes who would become the Scarecrow Tin Woodman and Cowardly Lion in Oz; creating Almira Gulch the Wicked Witch's Kansas counterpart; and changing the color of Dorothy's slippers from silver to ruby.
