Octavo xxiv chiefly indices 456 146 Postal Directory for the Colony 62 advertisements pages plus advertisements printed on the endpapers. Purple cloth extensively lettered in gilt and decorated in blind on both sides; rear cover affected by moisture buckling the board a little and staining the cloth and causing it to lift and crease; spine sunned and a little inkstained with a neat repair to the head; a few other minor signs of age and use; notwithstanding overall in very good condition internally excellent. The twenty-fourth number of the 'Natal Almanac and Register'. Provenance: the ownership signature 'Searcy' is written in ink at the head of the title page. We recognise it to be the hand of Alfred Searcy 1854-1925 customs officer parliamentary official and author. In 1882 he 'went to the Northern Territory as sub-collector to direct new customs arrangements. In recognition of his varied and excellent work he was promoted in 1888 and also became a justice of the peace. Within the tiny white community he was one of a handful of public servants striving to establish orderly administration over a vast area. In the 1880s especially there seemed to be a rosy future for many developmental schemes and Searcy was always an enthusiastic optimist. Rabaul in red pencil bound into a green pebbled cloth Penfold's springback letter file slightly scuffed edges of the typescript a little ragged but in very good condition. Translation from the German of Richard Parkinson's scarce work on the Bismarck Archipelago first published in 1907. This recently discovered typescript by translator and Rabaul resident Noel C. Barry is based on the second edition published in 1926. <br> <br>Barry began work on his translation in the 1920s after returning from service in WWI and completed it in the 1940s before War again intervened. The scholarly edition by John Dennison and J. Peter White of Parkinson's original work published in 1997 and online in 2010 by Sydney University made note of Barry's work observing "For many people this Barry translation became the sole avenue into Parkinson’s book." <br> <br>This copy with an early New Guinea provenance is from the collection of R. L. Pulsford a colleague of Noel Barry's at the Department of Agriculture Stock and Fisheries Rabaul has the errors in transcription mentioned in the Sydney University edition and as such is a valuable insight into the publishing history of a foundation work on the Pacific. . hardcover

Amongst the group all dressed in their Sunday best clothing is a European dressed in a dark suit with the words "Merry Christmas" above him.<br /> <br /> A wharenui big house is the communal meeting house of the Maori people of New Zealand. The houses are often elaborately carved inside and out with stylized images of the tribe's ancestors in the tribe's unique patterns. This meeting house was newly constructed with a large glass window next to the door.<br /> <br /> 6 x 4" laid down on card stock. The Christmas greeting captioned in white. Original linen covers 2 photographs of Noel's memorial tablet pasted to the end-papers 5 autograph family letters one is a copy and including two from Sidney Noel one of which records her sending a copy this one of the memoir to a family member Commander Noel in 1932. Ernest Noel FGS 18 August 1831 – 20 May 1931 was Member of Parliament MP for the Scottish seat of Dumfries Burghs from 1874 to 1886. He was chairman of the Artizans Labourers & General Dwellings Company from 1880 during the construction of a new suburb for the working classes in Wood Green which was named "Noel Park" in his honour. Noel was the second son of the Reverend Baptist Wriothesley Noel and Jane Noel née Baillie of Dochfour Inverness. His father was the tenth son of Sir Gerard Noel and Diana Baroness Barham and brother of Charles Noel 3rd Baron Barham later 1st Earl of Gainsborough. He was educated in Edinburgh was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society in 1849. Between 17 March 1851 and 11 Feb 1852 he partnered Hiram Williams as a Civil Mineral Engineer Agent and Surveyor and together they reported on the Hafod-y-Llan and Sygun mines in Snowdonia for a prospective buyer. He later entered Trinity College Cambridge at the age of 25. Between 1874 and 1886 Noel was Liberal member of Parliament for the Scottish seat of Dumfries Burghs. In the 1886 and 1892 elections he stood in Stirlingshire as a Liberal Unionist candidate but was unsuccessful both times. From 1880 was chairman of the Artizans Labourers & General Dwellings Company a for profit joint stock company interested in the construction of improved housing for the working classes. The company's "Noel Park" estate at Wood Green was named in his honour. Noel was deputy chairman of the English and Scottish London Board of the Eagle Star and British Dominions Insurance Company.
