Órfão desde muito cedo foi protegido pelo cónego Bouin que descobriu as suas aptitudes para as ciências matemáticas e o orientou para a hidrografia. Nomeado professor de hidrografia do <em>Collège Royal de Rouen</em> em 1753 ocupou a cátedra durante quarenta anos até 1791 sendo admitido em 1756 à Academia de Rouen da qual foi diretor entre 1766-1767. The iconographic collection constitutes a fundamental technical testimony to the methods of teaching hydrography at the end of the 18th century offering a complete overview of the instruments and procedures used at the time in French naval schools.</p> <p>Carefully printed in round characters on quality paper decorated with a small printer"s device on the face and elegant headpieces vignettes and initials woodcut with floral motifs and geometric mouldings.</p> <p>Copy with handwritten ownership title from 'J. P. Smith' on the title page and other handwritten notes on the front cover. Damp stains on the pages. Moisture damage to the binding with leather flaws on the spine and edges of the folders and softened cardboard.</p> <p>It shows the king"s approval and privilege on the two unnumbered pages after page 246.</p> <p>First rare edition of this technical manual from the late 18th century published by royal order as an official text for all French hydrography schools. The work was adopted by the French government to standardise nautical teaching in all the kingdom"s ports and was an essential reference for maritime training until the mid-19th century.</p> <p>The work was born in the context of French naval expansion under the ministry of Maréchal de Castries 1780-1787 a period of intense modernisation of the navy that included the creation of new hydrography schools and the adoption of standardised teaching methods. It summarises the fundamental knowledge of navigation at the time bringing together theoretical and practical precepts on nautical astronomy the use of instruments position calculations and the steering of vessels. It is a summary of the same author"s famous 'Leçons de Navigation' 1768 specifically adapted to the needs of the merchant navy captain"s exams.
