Noel Thomas J.
Colorado; A Liquid History & Tavern Guide to the Highest State
Golden CO: Fulcrum Publishing 1999. First Printing Stated. Trade paperback. Very good. The format is approximately 7 inches by 9 inches. xviii 254 pages. Illustrated covers. Illustrations. Further Reading. Index. Autographed copy sticker on front cover. Signed by the author with sentiment Cheers on the title page. Slight sticker residue noted on front cover. Thomas Jacob Noel born 6 May 1945 in Boston Massachusetts often introduced in media interviews as Dr. Colorado is an American historian specializing in the history of the Rocky Mountain West and especially of the state of Colorado. Noel is a graduate of the University of Denver B.A. history and M.A. library science. He received an M.A. and Ph.D. in history from the University of Colorado Boulder. He is a professor of history at the University of Colorado at Denver where he teaches classes in the history of the American West Colorado Denver historic preservation mining and railroads national parks and Western art and architecture. He is the co-author or author of more than fifty books numerous articles and newspaper columns. He is the director of the Center for Colorado Studies at the Denver Public Library. Noel won a Colorado Book Award in 1997 among numerous other awards. Noel leads walking railroading and motor-coach tours for various groups including The Colorado Historical Society and The Smithsonian. He chaired the Denver Landmark Preservation Commission and served as a National Register reviewer for Colorado. Extracts from a 1999 review by Ed Quillen for the Colorado Central Magazine: This book isn’t exactly history and it’s not quite a guidebook although it contains strong elements of both. It’s more like a collection of the lore you would hear if you embarked upon a tour of the saloons taverns roadhouses lounges dives gin mills tap rooms and bars of Colorado and somehow remained sober enough to remember the tales some of them doubtless true or true enough. Tom Noel a professor of history at the University of Colorado at Denver took on this challenge for all of Colorado after cataloging all 500 or so saloons in Denver. There he discovered that any book is a snapshot — saloons frequently come and go so that the author always misses a few and other accounts are obituaries by the time they appear in print. His research method which I was privileged to observe involved grabbing a local informant if possible then a night of bar-hopping with Tom always scribbling notes on 3 x5 cards. These became the basis for the book. It is organized alphabetically by towns from Alamosa to Yampa and Noel’s research extends from the Victorian splendors with gorgeous backbars which were in operation long before Prohibition to modern operations. Some Colorado guides focus only on the small mountain towns but Noel gives Denver Colorado Springs and Pueblo their full due and does not stint on the High Plains. There’s hard-drinking Leadville where the Manhattan “is so rough that the regulars chew on their beer bottles†and “the beer signs are more than the decor; they also provide the lighting and help hold the roof up. The Manhattan also has the other essential ingredient for a saloon: shiftlessness.†One of my favorites the Owl Cigar Store in Cañon City still serves malts the old-fashioned way and its hamburgers make no concession to the health craze gets nearly a full page. I was curious about the tin ceilings in many handsome old saloons such as Salida’s Victoria Tavern. They look good but they’re hell on acoustics when there’s a band. That’s by design Noel explains — since there were hotel rooms upstairs in many such establishments and people wanted to sleep despite any revelry downstairs the tin ceilings were designed to reflect the sound downward. This is a fine book witty and humane about those Colorado places “where everybody knows your name.†Indeed Colorado began in such a place — the first effort at organizing the territory then split among Kansas Nebraska Utah and New Mexico began in Dick Wooten’s saloon in what is now Denver. Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible
Grand Rapids MI: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company 2000. New Edition First Printing Stated. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. xxxiii 1 1425 21--including color maps pages. Two column format. Illustrations. This is a heavy volume and if shipped outside of the United States will require an additional shipping payment. Information printed inside front and back covers and on fep and rep. Contents includes a List of Maps; Consulting Editors Contributors Preface Introduction Abbreviations and Entries A-Z. Two terms in the title of this volume require some comment i.e. definition or explanation and elaboration: "Bible" and "Dictionary". "Bible" refers to the Christian Bible as commonly used in places where the great majority of the people have some affiliation with the christian Church and includes both the Old and Net Testaments. The OT for Protestands is the same as the Hevrew Scriptires acknoledges by the Jewish community as sacred Scripture. Catholic Christians also accept the Apocrypha or Deuterocaonicals as part of the OT. all of the above are treated in this Dictionary as well as the NT which is accepted as canonical scripture by practically all Christian groups. As for the second term Bible dictionaries generally come in two sizes: multivolume versions and one-volume dictionaries like the familiar Eerdmans Bible Dictionary of which the present volume represents not merely a new edition but in essence a fresh beginning. The one-volume Bible dictionary is interned to be a rapid-response reference work. It should supply sufficient factual information about books and persons places and events define words and longer expressions and thereby fulfill the basic purpose of any dictionary: to explain. The Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible gathers nearly 5000 alphabetically ordered articles that thoroughly yet clearly explain all the books persons places and significant terms found in the Bible. The Dictionary also explores the background of each biblical book and related writings and discusses cultural natural geographical and literary phenomena--matters that Bible students at all levels may encounter in reading or discussion. Nearly 600 first-rate Bible authorities have contributed to the Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible. Intended as a tool for practical Bible use this illustrated dictionary reflects recent archaeological discoveries and the breadth of current biblical scholarship including insights from critical analysis of literary historical sociological and other methodological issues. The editorial team has also incorporated articles that explore and interpret important focuses of biblical theology text and transmission Near Eastern archaeology extrabiblical writings and pertinent ecclesiastical traditions--all of which help make the Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible the most comprehensive and up-to-date one-volume Bible dictionary on the market today. Busch, Noel F.
T.R.; The Story of Theodore Roosevelt and His Influence on Our Times
New York: Reynal & Company 1963. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Good/Fair. 6 346 pages. Name in ink inside front cover. Bookseller stamp inside front cover. Discoloration on fep. DJ worn and torn. Illustrations. T.R.--A Chronology. Selected Bibliography. Index. Noel Fairchild Busch was an author and Life magazine correspondent who reported extensively on World War II and its aftermath. During the war he reported for Life from such countries as Argentina South Africa Egypt Saudi Arabia Britain Yugoslavia and Japan. A report on the United States occupation of Japan under Gen. Douglas MacArthur for Life's issue of Dec. 2 1946 led to one of his many books -''Fallen Sun'' published in 1948. His other books about Japan were ''Two Minutes to Noon'' an account of the 1923 Tokyo-Yokohama earthquake and fire and ''A Concise History of Japan.'' Mr. Busch began his association with the Time-Life publications in 1927 when he left Princeton University in his junior year to join Time magazine as an associate editor at the invitation of his cousin Briton Hadden who with Henry R. Luce had founded Time in 1923. Mr. Busch left Life in 1952 to become the representative of the Asia Foundation in Tokyo and Bangkok Thailand and was special assistant to the foundation's president in 1958 and 1959. He became a staff writer for Reader's Digest in 1959 and retired in 1976. Among his books were ''My Unconsidered Judgment'' his reminiscences about his roaming Life assignments; ''What Manner of Man'' a biography of Franklin D. Roosevelt; ''Briton Hadden: His Life and Time'' a biography and ''T.R. The Story of Theodore Roosevelt and His influence on Our Times.'' Derived from a Kirkus review: The Story of Theodore Roosevelt and His Influence in Our Times "is one more of those tantalizing historical conjectures upon which it may be permissible to speculate". Busch contributes a further explanation of and eulogy to Theodore Roosevelt. It does not tell everything in the Great Man's life; it assembles the facts of a notable career so that readers can form one's own opinion. The main point in Mr. Busch's biography is that T.R. had a strenuously clear intelligence and grasp of particulars right to the end. From what is presented here T.R. certainly did. He emerges as one of the most superior men who ever lived. Reynal & Company hardcover

Maurer Noel and Yu Carlos
The Big Ditch; How America Took Built Ran and Ultimately Gave Away the Panama Canal
Princeton NJ: Princeton University Press 2011. First Printing Stated. Hardcover. Good/Good. xv 3 420 2 pages. List of Illustrations. List of Tables. Illustrations. Tables. Notes. Index. Stamp on bottom edge. Depression on front cover and front of DJ. Noel Maurer is an associate professor of International Affairs and International Business at the George Washington University. Maurer earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1997. Between 1998 and 2004 he worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Economics at ITAM a university in Mexico City. Maurer also worked at an NGO dedicated to helping small rural communities in Chiapas find new business opportunities. After a brief unexpected stint as a full-time employee of the federal government in 2002-03 he began work as an assistant professor at the Harvard Business School in 2005. In 2015 he took the opportunity to join the faculty at George Washington University. Maurer's primary research interest is how private actors defend their property rights under dictatorial governments or political instability. The Big Ditch: How America Took Built Ran and Ultimately Gave Away the Panama Canal chronicles the economic and political history of the Canal from Spain's 1529 proposals through the present day. The book shows that the Canal produced great economic dividends until 1945 despite massive cost overruns and delays. Relying on geographical advantage and military might the United States captured most of these benefits. By the 1970s however when the Carter administration negotiated the turnover of the Canal back to Panama the strategic and economic value of the Canal had disappeared. And yet contrary to skeptics who believed it was impossible for a nation plagued by corruption to manage the Canal the Panamanians ultimately succeeded at running it better than their northern patrons. Name of previous owner stamped on fep. Cover has some wear and soiling. This reflects the state of the art the state of knowledge and the state of practice just at the United States was entering the Vietnam War. This revision into the thirteenth edition was undertaken at the request of the U.S. Naval Institute by the Standards and Curriculum Division Training Bureau of Naval Personnel. For nearly half a century The Bluejackets' Manual has been a basic training and reference text for hundreds of thousands of Navy men. During these years the book has incorporated the experience gained from two major wars and has evolved into an ever more effective volume. This thirteenth edition is the most recent step in that evolution. The Bluejackets' Manual was originally prepared in 1902 by Lieutenant Ridley McLean United States Navy and revised in 1914 1916 1922 and 1927 and was revised again in 1938. Ship Handling
New York: D. Van Nostrand Company Inc 1954. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Good/Fair. xii 219 1 pages. Illustrations. Definitions. DJ has wear soiling tears and chips. Commander Edward R. King was the commanding officer of the Destroyer leader John S. McCain. He spent most of his career at sea in destroyers cruisers and battleships. He had his first destroyer command during World War II. The John S. McCain was his fourth command. He and his co-author were classmates 1936 at the Naval Academy. Commander Noel also spent most of his career in destroyers cruisers and amphibious ships and had command of a destroyer for the last two years of WWII. He served in the Department of Seamanship and Navigation at the Naval Academy. This work reflects the state-of-the-art the state of knowledge and the state of practice between the end of Korean War and the development of American military involvement in the conflicts in Indochina and Southeast Asia. A fundamental skill of professional seamanship is being able to maneuver a vessel with accuracy and precision. Unlike vehicles on land a ship afloat is subject to the movements of the air around it and the water in which it floats. Another complicating factor is the mass of a ship that has to be accounted for when stopping and starting. Ship-handling is about arriving and departing a berth or buoy maneuvering in confined channels and harbors and in proximity to other ships whilst at all times navigating safely. Two other types of operations berthing alongside another ship and replenishment at sea are occasionally included. A key ability for a ship-handler is a good understanding of how the wind tide and swell the passage of other vessels as well as the shape of the seabed will affect a vessel's movement which together with an understanding of a specific vessel's performance should allow that vessel a safe passage. Gerson, Noel B.
Neptune
New York: Dodd Mead & Company 1976. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. 10 242 4 pages. Noel Bertram Gerson 1913-1988 was an American author who wrote 325 books including several best sellers among them two screenplay novelizations penned under the pseudonym Samuel Edwards The Naked Maja and 55 Days at Peking. Aside from "Samuel Edwards" which would seem to have been his dedicated by-line for tie-in work Gerson used the following nine pseudonyms in addition to his own name: Anne Marie Burgess; Michael Burgess; Nicholas Gorham; Paul Lewis; Leon Phillips; Donald Clayton Porter; Dana Fuller Ross; Philip Vail; and Carter A. Vaughan. After his World War II military experience in Army intelligence he began writing TV scripts before beginning his career as an author in 1950. Gerson's primary focus was on historical novels mostly stand-alone with American history receiving considerable attention. Of note he wrote a number of historical novels about colonial America and also the United States in its formative years. This is the story of one of the most daring projects of modern times. Jointly conceived and executed by an American Intelligence agency and a patriotic industrialist at a cost of many hundreds of millions of dollars. Operation Neptune was a plan to recover a sunken Russian submarine lying on the bottom three miles below the surface of the South China Sea. The price that award success is high: an armed Russian atomic device believed to be on board along with a copy of the Russian navy code. To carry out Operation Neptune new techniques must be developed but above all it is necessary to protect the operations from Russian intelligence and from the Chinese who have their own reasons for wanting to disrupt the work. Hyannis MA: Parnassus Imprints 1996. First Edition stated presumed first printing. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Format 5.25 inches by 7.25 inches. ix 3 259 1 pages. Illustrations. Bibliography. Noel Hynd was born in New York City and grew up in New York and Connecticut. He began writing professionally before graduation from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in International Relations. His first novel "Revenge" was published in 1976. Hynd worked with former British intelligence office 'Christopher Creighton' to tell the inside story of Britain's Crabb Affair one of the most notorious British diplomatic and intelligence scandals of the 1950s. It is the true story of Hall of Fame baseball pitcher Rube Marquard who attempted to quit baseball and join his wife actress/singer Blossom Seeley as a musical hall star in the years before World War I. Derived from a Publisher's Weekly review: Rube Marquard ne Richard LeMarquis was the pitching star of the New York Giants in their pennant-winning years of 1911-1913. Blossom Seeley nee Minnie Guyer had success as a singer on the West Coast and went to New York City where her show The Hen-Pecks established her as a star. Sports stars often played in vaudeville shows written for them and so it was that the skit ""Breaking the Record"" was put together for Marquard and Seeley. The two fell in love and Seeley divorced her husband to marry Marquard. In 1914 however the Giants had a bad year Marquard became less of a stage attraction and his wife went back on the vaudeville circuit as a solo act. They separated in 1916 and were divorced in 1922 as his career went downhill and hers soared so high that George Gershwin wrote ""Somebody Loves Me"" for her. Hynd has captured the spirit of the times in this quaint and entertaining sidelight to sports and show-biz history. Parnassus Imprints hardcover
