Nouvelle edition augmentee. 8vo rebound in handsome chocolate calf with black gilt spine labels 488 pp with the first blank inscribed: 'Presented to the Museum Library by Mr. Joseph Dorfmuller Mar. 21 1809' - this blank page has some restoration to edges using rice paper; also the title page through p.vi 3 leafs appear to be photoreproductions on very similar old laid paper; it fooled us for a while! The rest of the text appears to be original. This book in its original edition was first published in 1732 and was a widely popular survey of natural history. The editor de Chastenet from an illustrious French family became fascinated with animal magnetism and Mesmerism and became one of the leading proponents of those hypnotic techniques lecturing and writing on the subject.
