Charles Dickens
The Adventures of Oliver Twist
London - Bradbury and Evans 1846 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. The new and revised edition of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. Actually a nice copy with the plates in particularly clean condition. Some rubbing to the Davies Closter binding but this could be restored. Originally published as a serial inBentley's Miscellany1837-39 and then as athree volume bookbyBentley in 1838Dickens made the decision to revise his text. He reworkedhis second novelwhilsthe was in Italy in 1844-5. By this timeDickenshad bought the copyright for the title back from Richard Bentley who published the novel previously. Therefore the 'New and Revised edition' appeared in 1846. The revised editionwas unparallelled in comparison to Dickens' othernovels andthis edition forms the basis of the present Oliver Twist text. This text is bound fromthe ten monthly parts which were released of this edition. With the author's preface to the third edition. Illustrated with twenty four platesfrom illustrations by George Cruikshank. Collated complete. In a Davies Closter half calf binding. Oliver Twist is one ofDickens' most famous works and is notable for its unromantic portrayal of criminals and theirsordid lives. It is also noted for exposing the cruel treatment of many orphansinmid-nineteenth century London. Dicking satirizes the hypocrisies of his time such as child labour the recruitment of childrenas criminals as well as the presence of street children. Condition: In a half calf Davies Closter binding. Binder's stamp to verso of front endpaper. Externally generally smart with rubbing to the joints spine and extremities. Some loss to spine due to rubbing. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with the odd spot throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED. London - Bradbury and Evans hardcover

DICKENS Charles illustr. HK. BROWNE H. K.
Dombey and Son
London: Chapman and Hall n.d. Octavo. Bound in contemporary half red calf over marbled paper boards red and green labels raised bands and gilt decoration to spine; all edges marbled marbled endpapers. Binding shows well with a little rubbing. Evidence of page removed from prelims. Internally clean and free from spotting. Dickens' study of the deep desire to build something and pass it onto one's children and of the horrifying consequences that a misguided version of this passion can wreak on those children who disappoint their parents. In many ways a much darker novel than Dickens' other works and is in many ways therefore also the most interesting to read. London: Chapman and Hall, n.d. unknown
