The book and its contents are in mostly clean bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked gift notation on the front endpaper. The dust jacket has edge wear nicks edge tears and noticeable chips including a very large chip missing from the bottom rear corner. "Dickens's literary success began with the 1836 serial publication of The Pickwick Papers. Within a few years he had become an international literary celebrity famous for his humour satire and keen observation of character and society. His novels most published in monthly or weekly instalments pioneered the serial publication of narrative fiction which became the dominant Victorian mode for novel publication. Cliffhanger endings in his serial publications kept readers in suspense. The instalment format allowed Dickens to evaluate his audience's reaction and he often modified his plot and character development based on such feedback. For example when his wife's chiropodist expressed distress at the way Miss Mowcher in David Copperfield seemed to reflect her disabilities Dickens improved the character with positive features." . This copy also has duplicates of two ads. Original green printed wrappers. The usual rubbing and light wear and some light soiling to wrappers and plates. Some minor ink notes on top margin of front wrapper of part XV. Still a handsome near fine copy. Housed in a green cloth clamshell which is a bit soiled. "In Bleak House for the first time society is seen as an absurdity an irrelevance almost a madness. A dark force from which the real people must escape in order to create another society of their own. Dickens had been preparing for this novel all his life and despite the calamities. which had helped to provoke it in the first place . was even happy while he was writing it.
