Original publisher's red cloth binding with gilt stamping to front board & spine. AEG. Pale yellow eps. Bright gilt. Slight lean. Very minor wear. A handsome VG copy. 8 174 2 pp. Advert last 2 pp. 14 illustrations by Leech et al. 8vo. 6-3/4" x 4-3/16"

Cricket was Dickens' 3rd Christmas book debuting 20 December 1845 and quickly requiring 2 additional editions. The story one of allaying a husband's suspicions when he sees his young wife talking with another gentleman; said suspicions laid to rest by the work's supernatural agent the Cricket. While not capturing the public's favor as did his initial foray into Christmas novellas with Christmas Carol "Andrew Sanders has argued that it has key similarities to Shakespearean comedy and should be seen 'both as a significant indication of the tastes of the 1840s and Dickens himself.'" as quoted by Schlicke in the Reader's Companion to Dickens p. 124. I think it is the Oxford India Paper Dickens set of 17volumes as the numbering of titles Roman numerals is the same for both sets. The first three volumes of this listed set do not have the Roman Numeral numbering. That would make the missing VII Nicholas Nickleby the missing one in the 20 volumes quoted for ' The Works of Charles Dickens '. I would also surmise that this set is a subsequent edition to the India paper one circa 1900. Bookseller's Inventory # 200280. . No Edition Stated. Blue Cloth. Various/No Jackets. Illus. by Various. 6 3/4" X 4 1/2". Chapman & Hall, Limited; and Henry Frowde Hardcover
