Engraved portrait frontispiece and 39 engraved illustrations by 'Phiz.' 8vo beautifully bound by Wallis in full tan calf the spine with gilt-stippled raised bands between fully gilt decorated compartments featuring panels tooled in gilt at the edges and corners and with gilt floral devices at the center two compartments with contrasting red and green morocco labels lettered and ruled in gilt all edges gilt marbled endleaves. xvi 624 pp. A beautiful copy the binding especially handsome and very skillfully accomplished internally quite fresh and clean and very solid. FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE RARE IN SUCH FINE CONDITION. ONE OF DICKENS’ MOST GROUNDBREAKING NOVELS. NICHOLAS NICKLEBY rode on the coattails of the success of THE PICKWICK PAPERS commissioned by Chapman and Hall in November of 1837 for Å150 per monthly installment which was ten times the amount Dickens had received for THE PICKWICK PAPERS. 1838 was an incredibly prolific year for Dickens; he worked on NICKLEBY concurrently with OLIVER TWIST and BARNABY RUDGE eventually deciding that the latter must be postponed in the interest of producing quality work on the projects already undertaken. In addition to his fiction that year he became the first editor of the periodical BENTLEY’S MISCELLANY in which OLIVER TWIST appeared. The success of NICKLEBY benefited from Dickens’ established popularity: the serial began in April 1838 and sold 48000 copies of the first installment. It ended in October 1839 and the bound edition followed within a few months of its completion.<br> NICHOLAS NICKLEBY represents the beginning of Dickens’ lifelong warfare against the bad old methods of education. Royal 8vo in sixes very handsomely bound in three-quarter forest-green crushed morocco over light-green cloth covered boards the spines with raised bands gilt ruled the compartments of the spine with triple gilt ruled panels with central gilt ornamental devices two compartments lettered in gilt top edges gilt others untrimmed marbled end-leaves open ended cloth covered slipcase housing the three volumes. iv 306; vi 306; 426 2 ads pp. A very handsome set the bindings beautifully preserved strong and tight and very usable occasional spotting internally as is often typical of the parts issue generally quite clean and bright. A VERY HANDSOME SET OF MASTER HUMPHREY’S CLOCK which was initiated as an experiment on Dickens’ part. Originally he intended the work to be a miscellany which would contain a continuous narrative linked by reminisces of the narrator Master Humphrey. He outlined his goals in a preliminary letter to Chapman and Hall: “To introduce a little club or knot of characters and to carry their personal histories and proceedings through the work; to introduce fresh characters constantly; to reintroduce Mr. Pickwick and Sam Weller; xxx to write amusing essays on the various foibles of the day as they arise; to take advantage of passing events; and to vary the form of the papers by throwing them into sketches letters from imaginary correspondents and so forth so as to diversify the contents as much as possible.†Dickens would use ideas from the outline of this form in several succeeding books. <br> As the originally-conceived miscellany MASTER HUMPHREY’S CLOCK failed to gain a substantial readership so the project was quickly abandoned the story transformed into a serial and the character of Master Humphrey himself abandoned as a narrator in the midst of THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP.
