‎A Complete Set of the Nine Extra Christmas Numbers of ALL THE YEAR ROUND‎

‎1859. London: Office of All The Year Round / Chapman & Hall 1859-1867. In nine volumes. Original self-wrappers first four and blue printed wrappers last five -- as issued.

First Editions of all nine "Extra Christmas Numbers" of this periodical that Charles Dickens founded and edited for its nine years of existence. Previously he had likewise founded Household Words which likewise lasted nine years -- and which has nine Extra Christmas Numbers as well. In addition to editing these tales Dickens also wrote a portion of them -- specifically per Eckel: Christmas 1859: THE HAUNTED HOUSE. Dickens wrote "The Mortals in the House" "The Ghost in Master B's Room" and "The Ghost in the Corner Room" as well as most of the other opening paragraphs. Christmas 1860: A MESSAGE FROM THE SEA. Dickens wrote Chapters I II and V plus passages in the others; the rest is by Wilkie Collins. Christmas 1861: TOM TIDDLER'S GROUND. Dickens wrote Chapters I VI and VII. Christmas 1862: SOMEBODY'S LUGGAGE. Dickens wrote "His Leaving It Til Called For" "His Boots" "His Brown-Paper Parcel" "His Wonderful End" plus part of "His Umbrella." Christmas 1863: MRS. LIRRIPER'S LODGINGS. Dickens wrote Chapters I and VII. Christmas 1864: MRS. LIRRIPER'S LEGACY. Dickens again wrote Chapters I and VII. Christmas 1865: DR. MARIGOLD'S PRESCRIPTIONS. Dickens wrote Chapters I VI and VIII. Christmas 1866: MUGBY JUNCTION. Dickens wrote "Barbox Brothers" "Barbox Brothers and Co." "Main Line" and "No. 1 Branch Line." Christmas 1867: NO THOROUGHFARE. Dickens wrote the Overture Act III plus parts of Act I and Act IV; Wilkie Collins wrote the rest. As for condition all nine issues are near-fine the self-wrappers of the first four have some minor expert restoration; the latter five's blue wrappers are just about fine except for some small ink-drops on the fifth; the leaves of the 1864 and 1867 issues are unopened. It is very tough to assemble all nine of these in this condition. Podeschi Yale E11 E13-E20. Housed in a handsome though lightly scuffed full-morocco case with inner chemise. unknown books‎

‎BLEAK HOUSE‎

‎1853. in the primary cloth binding With Illustrations by Hablot. K. Browne. London: Bradbury and Evans 1853. Original blind-stamped olive green cloth all page edges gilt.

First Edition in book form following issuance in 20-in-19 monthly parts of Dickens's famous novel that attacks Chancery the London legal system. Included are forty plates by "Phiz" of which ten are "dark plates" made possible by a new procedure. This copy is still in the original cloth binding -- the primary one with blind-stamping that includes 16 little beads around each cover's outer margin. An ad in the final serial part urged customers to either a buy the book in this binding for one guinea £1/1s/0d or b take their serial parts to "their Booksellers" to arrange for the parts to be bound up in this binding for 1s/6d. This copy -- bound without the half-title and of course without all the ads -- is from the latter option as one can see the parts' stab-holes; the owner of these parts paid extra though to have gilding added to the page edges. Condition is good-to-very good -- actually near-fine except for the rear joint where there is wear along the rear joint and a little at the spine ends though no cloth is missing and nothing new other than glue has been added. The pale-yellow endpapers are original though substantially cracked at the gutter again glued in place so all is tight. Lastly all forty plates are present but as is often the case they are browned at the outer margin and some have moderate foxing; as always the spine is sunned to a honey brown -- unavoidable with olive green cloth. These hefty octavo Dickens volumes this one is 624 pages not including the plates were much too heavy for their delicate cloth and endpapers -- which is why the vast majority of copies have been rebound; in our experience BLEAK HOUSE is considerably more difficult to find in original cloth than in serial parts. With Inspector Bucket investigating BLEAK HOUSE is a Haycraft-Queen "Cornerstone" of Detective Crime & Mystery Fiction; the book first appeared on the screen as a silent film in 1920 and more recently 2005 as a British TV mini-series. Smith I pp 79-84. unknown books‎

‎THE CHIMES‎

‎1845. A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year out and a New Year in. With Illustrations. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard 1845. Original blue-grey cloth decorated in gilt.

First hardbound and fully-illustrated American edition -- preceded by only three days by E. Winchester's edition and by Harper's edition both of which were issued in wrappers and with one or no illustrations. "The L&B edition is almost an exact copy of the original English edition" with the same front cover decoration and with the same plates by John Leech Richard Doyle and others. The illustrations which in the English edition share pages with text were for this edition "extended" to occupy entire pages: "the work of the illustrations is very well done but it is doubtful if the changes have improved them any" quotes from Wilkins. This copy is bound in blue cloth; others are in yellowish-white or pink no priority. Curiously the binder's name "J.G. Russell Binder" appears in the lower margin of each cover's design. Condition is very good -- better than that externally as there is only minor soil and edge-wear. Unfortunately for the text pages a very cheap paper was employed such that today those leaves are heavily browned. This does not apply to the plates however which are quite white and bright. Smith pp 55-58 his illustrations are of THIS copy; Podeschi Yale A88; Wilkins p. 37. Provenance: penciled signature of bibliographer Walter Smith on the front endpaper where resides as well an inked 1851 gift inscription. unknown books‎

‎THE BATTLE OF LIFE‎

‎1846. A Love Story. London: Bradbury & Evans 1846. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in gilt.

First Edition of the fourth of Dickens's five illustrated Christmas books -- following A CHRISTMAS CAROL THE CHIMES and THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH and preceding THE HAUNTED MAN. This is an unusual tale in which two sisters love the same man both ultimately settling in with him though only one is married to him -- according to Thackeray "a wretched affair." It is in fact quite autobiographical: Dickens loved Mary Hogarth married her sister Catherine and then was happy to have his household run by their sister Georgina. This copy has the vignette title page in the fourth and usual state Todd's state E1 with an angel holding the banner and with no publisher's imprint. In our experience at least 90% and perhaps 95% of the copies encountered are of this state. This is a bright attractive copy just about fine with only the faintest hint of wear at the very tips volume slightly askew as usual. The front endpaper bears the inked inscription "Ellen F. Lee from her father December 25 1846" -- Christmas Day six days after publication. Smith II pp 60-65; Podeschi Yale A116. unknown books‎

‎THE HAUNTED MAN and THE GHOST'S BARGAIN‎

‎1848. A Fancy for Christmas-Time. London: Bradbury & Evans 1848. 2 pp preliminary undated ads. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in gilt all page edges gilt.

First Edition of the fifth and last of Dickens's illustrated Christmas books none had been published in 1847 when he had been busy working on DOMBEY AND SON. This is the tale of Redlaw the chemist who makes a pact with his "evil genius" to remove all of his memories only to be saved in the end by his guiding angel. The book is illustrated by John Leech John Tenniel and others. In this copy the first page numeral on p. 166 is damaged -- which though priority is uncertain is the only identifiable issue point of this book. This is a near-fine copy spine slightly faded just a touch of wear at the spine corners; atypically the original delicate endpapers are intact. The front free endpaper bears the inked inscription "Ellen F. Lee from her father December 25 1848" -- Christmas Day six days after publication. Smith II pp 66-70; Podeschi Yale A119. unknown books‎

‎Dealings with the Firm of DOMBEY AND SON‎

‎1846. a remarkably fine set Wholesale Retail and for Exportation. With Illustrations by H. K. Browne beginning with the 6th part: With Illustrations engraved on Wood by J. W. Orr from designs by H. K. Browne. New York: Wiley and Putnam beginning with the 18th part: John Wiley 1846-1848. Twenty monthly parts in nineteen in the original brownish-grey wrappers printed in black.

First American Edition in the original parts. The English parts ran from October 1846 through April 1848 and each Wiley & Putnam part was issued immediately after its English counterpart. As Wilkins observes "At the bottom of the first page of each number was printed 'The Illustrations for this Number will be given with the Next' the text probably being set in type as soon as the English number was received and printed at once without waiting for the engraving of the plates for that number so that the plates were always one number behind the text. The Phiz plates were redrawn and engraved on wood by J. W. Orr and it is remarkable how closely the spirit of the original etchings was reproduced in wood engravings." The Wiley & Putnam parts contain a total of 36 plates two in each part except for the first; not included were the four plates that accompanied the English 19/20th part because of the one-month lag in reproducing the engravings . Part I includes a title page and the final part includes the other preliminaries necessary to facilitate the binding of the parts into two volumes 38 plates are listed in these preliminary leaves: the final two were later available upon application to the publisher. Two other American publishers also issued DOMBEY in parts. Bradbury & Guild of Boston issued a very similar set of parts likewise with 36 plates running a month behind in wrappers that were exact facsimiles of the English ones. Priority between this issue and the Wiley & Putnam one is unknown as it probably was measured in hours not days. Lea & Blanchard of Philadelphia also issued parts but not as quickly: they waited for plates to be engraved so that all 40 could be included they advertised it as "the only edition which presents the plates accompanying the text to which they refer." This is A REMARKABLY FINE SET. Most of the parts are virtually flawless other than trifling wear at the very tips of the spine; Part I has a chip in its rear wrapper and Parts XV and XVII have minor wear at the spine but overall the condition of this set is amazing. The rarity of American Dickens in parts can hardly be over-emphasized; it is no exaggeration that one encounters hundreds of English sets in parts for every single American set of parts. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase bearing the wrong date and inner chemise. Podeschi Yale A104; Wilkins p. 25. unknown books‎

‎The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby Extra Illustrated‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1839. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Browne Hablot K. 'Phiz"; Meadows Kenney. First printing mixed state octavo size 707 pp. This was writer Charles Dickens' 1812-1870 third novel widely anticipated and loved. He is often considered the greatest of the Victorian era novelists blending drama and comedy into compelling stories. In this novel Dickens explores the social issues that his works are known for such as harsh boarding schools the privilege of royal title and wealth social customs of the day and the plight of the working class. The plot focuses on the hardships courageously navigated by young Nicholas Nickleby after his father passes away.

The extra illustrations provided were drawn by Joseph Kenny Meadows 1790 - 1874 best known for his drawings published in Punch magazine. He was a friend of Charles Dickens and several other writers of the period. These caricatures add a visual element to the characters depicted by Dickens n.b. above information from Wiki.

___DESCRIPTION: Half red morocco leather over marbled paper boards six compartments on spine five with gilt title and author in gilt to one compartment embossed decorative and gilt borders to front and rear boards all edges marbled frontis of a young Charles Dickens supplied thirty-nine plates by Hablot K. Browne "Phiz" and twenty-four plates of various characters in the novel by Kenny Meadows the extra plates. This is a mixed state in that two of the first four plates have the Chapman and Hall imprint further the correction on p.123 has been made but "latter" for "letter" still appears on p.160 line 43. Octavo size 8 1/2" by 5 1/2 " iii-vii viii-xvi 1 2-624.

___CONDITION: Overall very good internally this volume is quite clean the text block is square the hinges are sound and the gilt on the spine is bright. ‎London: Bradbury & Evans 1854. First edition. Fine. A Fine copy in original cloth with publisher's marbled edges and endpapers. Slight bit of sunning to spines but overall in beautiful unsophisticated condition. Collation and issue points conforming to Smith. Bookplates of two previous owners to front pastedowns of each. Internally clean and unmarked. Housed in a custom quarter morocco slipcase with chemise. A superior copy accompanied by an early James F. Drake description.

As the only book Dickens wrote specifically for children it occupies a unique place in his' oeuvre. "Dickens' intention for the book was made manifest in the dedication at the beginning of the first volume to his 'own dear children: Whom I hope it may help bye-and-bye to read with interest larger and better books on the same subject.' This makes the purpose clear. Dickens did not intend the book to supplant or rival those books by Keightley or Macaulay that preceded it. The book rather is intended by Dickens as an exciting or interesting study of the subject which will whet his children's -- and other children's -- appetites for English history and is designed to act as a springboard to discovery" Tearle. Thus while Dickens doesn't break new ground in uncovering or analyzing history he uses his novelistic abilities to make past figures feel more real more exciting and more present and to cast long-ago events as relevant to life in his own time.
