Dickens Charles
A Child's History of England in 3 vols.
London: Bradbury & Evans 1854. First edition. Fine. A Fine copy in original cloth with publisher's marbled edges and endpapers. Slight bit of sunning to spines but overall in beautiful unsophisticated condition. Collation and issue points conforming to Smith. Bookplates of two previous owners to front pastedowns of each. Internally clean and unmarked. Housed in a custom quarter morocco slipcase with chemise. A superior copy accompanied by an early James F. Drake description.

As the only book Dickens wrote specifically for children it occupies a unique place in his' oeuvre. "Dickens' intention for the book was made manifest in the dedication at the beginning of the first volume to his 'own dear children: Whom I hope it may help bye-and-bye to read with interest larger and better books on the same subject.' This makes the purpose clear. Dickens did not intend the book to supplant or rival those books by Keightley or Macaulay that preceded it. The book rather is intended by Dickens as an exciting or interesting study of the subject which will whet his children's -- and other children's -- appetites for English history and is designed to act as a springboard to discovery" Tearle. Thus while Dickens doesn't break new ground in uncovering or analyzing history he uses his novelistic abilities to make past figures feel more real more exciting and more present and to cast long-ago events as relevant to life in his own time. Illustrated with plates after the originals by "Phiz" Hablot Knight Browne George Cruikshank Frederick Walker Edwin Landseer Daniel Maclise John Leech Marcus Stone George Cattermole and Luke Fildes. Partially unopened. A near fine set.

"The Library Edition came about largely because of the suggestion of Forster that while Dickens's works were available in volumes in the Cheap Edition and in reprints of the serial parts there was no high-quality edition that would appeal to the wealthy. Dickens eventually came round to the idea that an elegant edition could raise the stature of his writings. He faced a complication in that the rights to the works were divided between Chapman and Hall and Bradbury and Evans. Consequently the volumes contained the imprints of both publishers. With a dedication to Forster the Library Edition appeared in 22 volumes in 1858-9 at 7s 6d per volume. Titles included Pickwick Nickleby Chuzzlewit Old Curiosity Shop Reprinted Pieces Barnaby Rudge Hard Times Sketches by Boz Oliver Twist Dombey Copperfield Pictures from Italy Bleak House Little Dorrit and Christmas Books. The only illustrations were the frontispieces.

Between 1861 and 1874 this edition was reissued in 30 volumes with the addition of Tale of Two Cities Great Expectations Our Mutual Friend The Uncommercial Traveller A Child's History of England Christmas Stories and Drood. The reissue contained illustrations—the frontispieces plus additional illustrations by artists such as Marcus Stone John Leech and Clarkson Stanfield—and came to be known as the Illustrated Library Edition.Recognizing the continuing potential for sales of Dickens's works Chapman and Hall in 1873 published a prospectus for the Second Illustrated Library Edition containing they contended all the works the novelist wished to preserve. Calling it the first well-printed issue with specially cast type and better paper than that used in previous editions this set was published in 30 volumes between 1873 and 1876 and sold at £15 for the set a high price for the time" Oxford Companion to Dickens.

Gimbel D72. Var. nd circa 1900. Unique. Hardcover. Very Good. Light shelf/edge wear age toning to some leaves creases to some two bookplates at front pastedown ephemera laid in else tight bright and unmarred. Full tan leather binding two raised bands gilt lettering and decorative elements dentelles marbled endpages. 8vo. np. Illus. b/w plates. comprised of three parts see below

Bookplate of renowned author and librettist Harry Bache Smith. Also bears armorial bookplate of Claire Mendel noted German Consul and collector.
A bit of background on Lord Bateman: "An adaptation of the traditional ballad attributed to Thackeray British Library Catalogue with preface and notes by Dickens. George Cruikshank regaled a dinner of the Antiquarian Society with a rendition of the ballad. On "hearing Cruikshank mournfully intone the word's of the Turks' daughter to the imprisoned LordÂ… Dickens offered to polish it into an even more solemn absurdity. He told Cruikshank to ask his sister Fanny to take down the music and 'to be sure to mark the shades and the expression.' And although he kept his part in The Loving Ballad secret he not only wrote a burlesque introduction and notes but altered lines and substituted a new last verse." Johnson p. 260. It has also been suggested that Thackeray arranged the old ballad Dickens is thought to have contributed the 'scholarly' notes and Cruikshank provided the illustrations.
This volume is comprised of four parts the first is an engraving of Thackeray of unknown origin the second is Dec. 1892 Harper's Magazine article by Anne Thackeray Richie considering the history of the story's origin and arguing that her father was responsible without Dicken's contribution. The third part is 4 mss pages in Harry Bache Smith exploring his Bateman holdings and its history and noting a direct contradiction to Richie's argument. Finally and notably there are 3 4-up fo leaves which appear to be maquettes of Cruikshank's illustrations for the 1939 first edition.no other such set is known to exist.
An unusual and genuinely significant collection. hardcover books

The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby
London: Chapman and Hall 1839. First edition. Bound by Bayntun in three-quarter red calf over cloth boards all edges gilt. Spine a bid faded internally an excellent copy. Complete with the half-title and all 40 plates engraved by Phiz. Likely washed at the time of binding as most plates show little to no foxing. Most of Smith's internal flaws are found including the ones of pgs. 123 and 160 only found in the earliest copies bound from the parts.

Nicholas Nickleby Dickens' third novel was originally serialized in monthly parts then issued as a book in cloth. The publishers also had a small number of copies bound up in the present morocco both for presentation - a census of copies inscribed by Dickens on publication show them all to be in the green morocco binding - and for sale to the public at a higher price. "Dickens' third novel has always been a favourite with the general public. Indeed it was the book's huge sales that enabled Dickens to give up parliamentary reporting and become a full-time writer. The theatricality of the novel attracted new and more appreciative critical attention and it demonstrates the inextricable link between public and private" Bannerjee. A satire tackling the injustices faced by both women and men within the Victorian class system that relied so heavily the social status of the patriarch the novel follows Nicholas Nickleby as he seeks to support his mother and sister after his father's death. When Nicholas' father dies after losing all of the family's money it is up to the young man to emerge as the new and more morally sound patriarch. Dashing and likable Nicholas ultimately prevails dodging shady characters along the way and securing a respectable life in Devonshire for his extended family. London: Bradbury and Evans 1848. First edition. Near Fine. Finely bound by Morrell in three-quarter green morocco all edges gilt spines with intricate details and raised bands marbled end papers. An excellent copy overall with four additional portrait plates bound in depicting characters from the novel.

Dombey and Son tackles a number of key themes that appear throughout Dickens' authorial career -- concerns about family duty class position child welfare and the dangers of arranged marriages in particular. As the titular Dombey builds his shipping company he fantasizes that his son will someday take over the business and continue his legacy. But England is changing rapidly due to the effects of industrialization and its effects ripple throughout Victorian culture. One symbol of industrialization's promise and its perils is the railroad. In chapter six Dickens calls the railroad's impact a "great earthquake." Dombey and Son grapples with the effects of industrialization and the railroad is one of the novel's symbols for this momentous era. Near Fine. Bradbury and Evans unknown books

Dickens Charles Sir S. L. Fildes illustrator
The Mystery of Edwin Drood Extra-Illustrated
London: Chapman and Hall 1870. First Edition. Fine. Bound by Cedric Chivers circa 1911 in full red crushed morocco. With the coat of arms for the city of Rocherster on the front panel and intricate details on the spine. Silk moire end papers all edges gilt extra-illustrated with 17 anonymously executed watercolors depicting localites in Rochester the inspiration for the setting of the novel and Dickens's childhood home. Four of the original watercolors are in full color. Additional hand drawn title page; portrait of Fildes and John Forster tipped in as well as a few leaves from Forster's "Life of Dickens" relating to this work. Book and binding in exceptional Fine condition. Two other extra-illustrated copies in Chivers bindings appeared in the auction record 1991 and 1995 but nothing since then. This binding likely executed at the same time c. 1911.

Famed for his lush bindings involving leather gilt and vellum Cedric Chivers often partnered with William Morris' Kelmscott Press. By the turn of the century his work began to be sought out for presentation and exhibition copies of literature by authors including Charles Dickens Dante Gabriel Rossetti Alfred Lord Tennyson and Charles Lamb.

Dickens' final novel left unfinished and published posthumously breaks with some of the author's previously established literary tendencies. Present are Dickens' emphasis on the relationship among smaller family units that create a larger social ecosystem; also present are his interests in blood versus conjugal familial duties. Yet the novel takes on an even darker tone than previous works. Drood's uncle John Jasper sits at the book's center; and his roles as an opium addict and philanderer affect all characters in orbit around him. In love with Drood's fiancee Rosa Jasper becomes the main suspect when Drood disappears under suspicious circumstances. Yet because the novel was left unfinished at the time of Dickens' death no final conclusion exists. Thus a part of the book's popularity was and continues to be derived from the ongoing mystery. "Since its publication in 1870 there have been hundreds of theories.trying to argue for how they think the story might end.the existing half of Drood spans just over 200 pages but the non-existent half has been expanded into thousands of pages presented in letters journal articles monographs novels. Dickens' book is open ended albeit unintentionally and that has meant a colossal opportunity for readers to engage with and explore the wide unknown of Drood's conclusion" Orford. Fine. The Personal History of David Copperfield
Bradbury & Evans 1850. First Edition. wrappers. Very good. 20 vols. in 19 a serialization sequentially published over 1 1/2 years. 1st edition 1st issue in the original monthly parts preceding all other editions and read the next sentence deliberately because the distressing phrase you inevitably see is "almost every" while the happy phrase you are about to see is "each and every." This set conforms to each and every point in Hatton & Cleaver all erratum the correct covers all ads all samples and all 40 inserted plates by H. K. Browne including the frontispiece and vignette title. And perfection is important in a Dickens parts serialization because later ads are the telltale sign of later issue in many cases months later so do not discount comprehensiveness as mere frill or turn your back on it the way you would on a drunk woman haphazardly seated nearby at a dinner party who relentlessly keeps insisting that you name your favorite Powerpuff Girl. Original wrappers neat repairs to backstrips light wear at edges else a very good set the old-fashioned very good infrequently offered for sale so clean complete upright and intact a stirring combination of quality magnitude precedence and inclusiveness. Full dark blue morocco case. Collation: Octavo 8 1/8" X 5 9/16". i-vii viii ix x-xii xiii xiv xv-xvi 1 2-624. Reference: Hatton and Cleaver pp. 253-272. Eckel pp. 75-77. Raising his game at the height of his powers Dickens explores writing in the first person and achieves the great novel of initiation finding the ideal balance between the bustling energy of his early works and the mature sense of design exhibited here for the first time. The plotline is pierced by an unsettling exposé of the treatment inflicted on Victorian children and this is buttressed by poignant statements about the terrors and torments of youth coming of age most of which apply in any era and successfully concluding his quest the novel ends with a glimpse of the grown man. Dickens began to write it as pure autobiography but he found the naked facts too personal accordingly many of the events are drawn from his personal experiences but many more are fictionalized from his keen reconnaissance of life. However Micawber can be no other than Dickens' father and there is no doubt that David Copperfield is Dickens himself. And knowing that he had laid the needle against the redline pin on the great-ometer he openly stated more than once that Copperfield was his favorite from among all his books.
