Spine expertly renewed on part I and perhaps a few others; light soiling to a few wrappers. Neat owner name on upper margin of part IX and XVI. Annotated on the upper margin of part XVI front wrapper by bibliographer Thomas Hatton thus: "Slip to be added" - the slip is present here as are all slips and ads. A rare slip is laid in by the publisher or possibly by booksellers with the following message: "All ye who wish to read this part of Little Dorrit - Ye surely will not grudge to pay a penny for it; Three days ye'll get to read as well as one to send it And if ye damage 't aught 'tis hop'd ye will refund it." This slip is one of 6 found in the Thomas Hatton collection. Internally clean and bright. An outstanding set with everything including a pedigree - it is from the famed Hatton & Cleaver collection. Original blind-stamped green publisher's cloth with spines elaborately decorated in gilt. First "Cheap" Edition first issue from the first and most important collected works of Dickens with in this case a 2pp new introduction and a specially commissioned new frontispiece. Begun in 1847 with works already published Dickens added further titles as he went along. Most were published by Chapman & Hall however this particular title belonged to Bradbury & Evans yet both provided a book nearly identical in design. Despite being called "cheap" Dickens made sure that these volumes were just as high quality in texture and ornamentation as his first editions; there are 17 volumes in total all are rarely seen in fine condition. A FINE copy quite rare in this splendid condition spine a trifle browned as almost always with this olive-green cloth trifling wear to the extremities armorial bookplate of Henry Smith and blind-stamp of W. ‎1850. This is a complete set Dickens's annual "Extra Christmas Numbers" -- all nine of HOUSEHOLD WORDS followed by all nine of ALL THE YEAR ROUND. London: Dec. 1850 - Dec. 1858 and Dec. 1859 - Dec. 1867. Original self-wrappers first 13 numbers and original blue printed wrappers last five numbers -- as issued. First Editions of all eighteen pieces. Dickens was the editor or "conductor" of both of these periodicals -- one rising out of the ashes of the other -- but he also wrote at least part of the Christmas story in each of these eighteen numbers. Five of the numbers HhW 1854 through 1858 still have unopened leaves; a few appear that they might once have been bound up though not trimmed or anything. They are housed in a modern cloth case with inner chemise. Though the last five numbers the ones in blue wrappers are not uncommon the others have become rather scarce; it is now quite unusual to encounter a complete collection of all eighteen. First issue of text with the word "Delight" instead of "Joy" mentioned twice on page 284 part IX; with "Capatin" in the last line of page 324 part XI; first state of Advertiser in part XIII with "October 1847" in unbroken type on p. 1; the word "if" omitted on page 426 line 9 page number 431 is present in part XIV; Part XIX/XX with first issue title page showing Captain Cuttle's hook on his left arm and with the 2 line errata. Part XV with 10 diary leaves in the Letts Son & Steer ad. With 40 inserted plates by Hablot K. Brown Phiz who also designed the green wrappers. Spines are expertly renewed on parts I VII XVI and perhaps a few others. Light soiling to wraps of some parts; neat owner name on front wrap of part XII. Booksellers' ticket on front wrap of several parts. Plates are very good to fine light tanning at edges of a few. There are a couple of "firsts" in Dombey and Son: the plate "On the Dark Road" in part XVIII is the first of what became known as the "dark plates" - also this is the first appearance of the "horizontal plates" on which the subject is rotated 90 degrees. ‎Typescript Lecture of Charles Dickens's "Personal Reminiscences" DICKENS Charles. Personal Reminiscences of his Father Miss Dickens's Type Writing Office N.p.: N.d. ca. 1934. Typescript of a lecture 118 pp. On one side only. Quarto. With about twenty hand changes in text. The lecture was published in a supplement to the Christmas number of the Windsor Magazine for 1934 under the title "An Important Literary Discovery" and with a forward by Mary Angela Dickens Charles Dickens's grand-daughter. This typescript was done at "Miss Dickens" typewriting office and according to a pencil note "She was one of the pioneers of Typewriting in London. She charged 1/2d a folio." Half brown morocco over brown pebbled cloth gilt-stamped on spine with five raised bands. Many period corrections throughout. Edges rubbed small spot to front cover. Very good. ‎First Obtainable Printing of "Is She His Wife or Something Singular" DICKENS Charles. Is She His Wife or Something Singular. A Comic Burletta in One Act. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1877. First obtainable printing. Sixteenmo. 80pp. Original brown cloth decoratively blocked in black and blind lettered in gilt and black. Off-white endpapers printed in red. A fine bright copy. Housed in a custom maroon cloth slipcase black morocco label on spine gilt-stamped. Apparently no copy exists of the first 1837 edition of this play Dickensí third published play first performed 6 March 1837; this is the only published work by Dickens to which this situation applies. The Gimbel collection has playbills for performances on 13 March and 6 April 1837. Eckel mentions that the only known copy of this edition was at Osgood for their 1877 reprint and was subsequently destroyed in a fire there in 1879. A census in Eckel finds only three extant copies of the 1873 British reprint. Thus the Osgood reprint of 1877 is the first obtainable printing of this piece. The Gimbel collection does have a copy of the 1873 English probably the one mentioned by Eckel as lacking the back wrapper; the extensive McQuire collection of American Dickens did not have a copy; Vander Poel had both green and brick cloth variants of the 1877 as did Gimbel. These issues would be collected in fours and bound in blue wrappers as nine parts in a slightly more common presumably later binding state. Near Fine generally clean and bright with a few stains to no. 84 age-toning to certain issues stain in nos. 115-116 mild ripple to leaves occasional minor creases or fore-edge tears. Issue 119 spine worn. Presented in green cloth-covered clamshell box with paper spine label.<br /> <br /> A complete collection of the serialized novel Great Expectations. Dickens was editing the journal All the Year Round but circulation was flagging. He realized that if he wanted something done right he'd have to do it himself so he ran his own novel to get more readers. Especially rare in such nice condition. Chapman and Hall unknown books‎

Illustrated by an engraved frontispiece and vignette titlepage along with 38 additional plates by H.K. Browne 'Phiz'. All is as called for in Smith including signature 2B2 printed as B2. Smith I 12; Gimbel A 141. A bit of scattered foxing on the plates and preliminary matter but most leaves and plates are quite clean; small hairline crack to the bottom of the front joint otherwise very attractive and sound.
