27 June 1847. Folded bifolium total leaf size 226 x 182 mm writing on three sides. With the original envelope. Very light old adhesive residue general toning. In very good condition. Autograph letter signed from Charles Dickens to Julius Moritz Feist 1802-1872 in all about 120 words in his hand. Writing from the Athenaeum Dickens apologizes for not having been able to meet him during his visit to France and expressing his hope that he will be able to meet him in London: "I am exceedingly sorry not to have had the opportunity of making your acquaintance when you came to me with so good an introduction as that of our friend Count d'Orsay. When you next visit London I shall hope to be more fortunate and that you will then find me in my own house Devonshire Terrace Regent's Park where I have not been able to reside since my recent return to England in consequence of having let it during my absence abroad. Allow me to express the pleasure I have had with the receipt of your obliging letter; and may except the assurance of my consideration. I am Sir Faithfully Yours Charles Dickens". Dickens had visited Paris in 1847 but the illness of his eldest son meant that he ended his trip prematurely and returned to England. The Count d'Orsay referred to is the artist and extravagant socialite Alfred Grimaud Comte d'Orsay 1801-1852. d'Orsay was a close friend of Dickens and the godfather to his sixth child. Julius Moritz Feist was a Jewish banker in Frankfurt; there does not appear to be any evidence of him ever meeting Dickens again. This letter was published in the Pilgrim Press edition of the Letters of Charles Dickens 1981 vol. V p. 104. unknown
