Strappo a pg 99 angolo basso con perdita di una sola parola.La prima rappresentazione dell'opera si svolse a Palazzo Farnese a Caprarola il primo settembre del 1599 (posticipata rispetto alla previsione del 1598). L'attribuzione al Tasso è combattuta e fonte di scontro fra critici letterari. A rafforzare la paternità tassiana dell'opera esiste una lettera del Tasso scritta nel 1586 nella quale il Tasso affermò che stesse per iniziare la scrittura di una commedia dedicata a Virgiania De' Medici. Ritornando agli studi critici, è indubbio il lavoro di revisione di Antonio Liberati (autore del prologo e degli intermezzi) e in generale dei venti Accademici di Caprarola, in primis anche lo stesso Scipione Perini, finanziatore dell'opera stampata e probabilmente ideatore del titolo. Egli stesso infatti, pur nativo di Caprarola, si trasferì a Viterbo nel 1603 e in quello stesso anno prese la decisione di curare la stampa e commissionarla allo stampatore, Girolamo Discepolo. Fu il massimo esponente della cultura Rinascimentale Estense e fu considerato uno dei massimi teorici del genere Teatrale. Opera dedicata a Alessandro Este. L'opera è tratta da un'opera complessiva nella quale comaparivano altre otto tragedie del Giraldi. La tragedia è composta da 5 atti. Presenza di piccolo foro di tarlo nel margine bianco basso senza lesione di testo lungo trenta pagine. .

Single sheet pre-printed in red 'Anna Neagle CBE' and addressed from the Adelphi Theatre, signed in black ink; near fine condition. The letter is addressed to a 'Miss Sage' whom Anna Neagle thanks for a letter. She goes on to remark that 'as you saw we are having lovely and most appreciative audiences and I am very happy to be dancing in a musical again'. The letter is addressed from the Adelphi Theatre in London's West End where Anna Neagle was appearing in Wallace Douglas's hugely successful production of Heneker and Taylor's musical 'Charlie Girl'. It ran for a staggering six years and over 2,000 performances earning the actress an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for her enduring popularity. Anna Neagle CBE (1904-1986), the highly popular English stage and film actress and singer, was awarded the CBE in 1952 and created a Dame in 1969. Her most memorable film appearances include Nurse Edith Cavell (1939), No No Nanette (1940), The Yellow Canary (1943) and Odette (1950)

John Paddy Carstairs (1910-1970), director and author, was a stalwart of the British film industry for over thirty years. Starting his career as assistant cameraman, he quickly progressed to writing screenplays (beginning with 'Honeymoon Adventure' in 1931) and directed his first feature in 1934. He is best known for 'The Chiltern Hundreds' (1949), the first (and hugely successful) Norman Wisdom comedy 'Trouble in Store' (1953) and numerous subsequent vehicles for Frankie Howerd, Tommy Steele, Charlie Drake and Bob Monkhouse. As a writer he produced a string of humorous and semi-autobiographical novels, of which the present work is regarded as among the finest. This copy was inscribed by Carstairs at Pinewood Studios during the making of 'The Big Money' (1956) produced by Joseph Janni and starring Ian Carmichael and Kathleen Harrison.

Flora Robson (1902-1984), outstanding British character actress, was born in South Shields but her theatrical training took place at RADA where she was awarded a bronze medal in 1921. From a long and most distinguished career she is probably best remembered for her portrayal of Elizabeth I in William K Howard's feature film 'Fire Over England' (1937) in which she starred with Laurence Oliver and Vivien Leigh, and as the Mother Superior in Michael Powell's cult classic 'Black Narcissus' (1946). She was nominated for an Academy Award for Sam Wood's 'Saratoga Trunk' (1943) and awarded the DBE in 1960.
