‎TRAGEDY IN ATHENS Performance Space and Theatrical Meaning‎

‎Former classics scholar's bookplate on ffep (John H. Betts) else Fine. ; 244 pages; David Wiles explores the performance of tragedy as a spatial practice specific to Athenian culture, at once religious and political. After reviewing controversies and archaeological data regarding the fifth-century performance space, Wiles turns to the chorus and shows how dance mapped out the space for the purposes of any given play. He shows how performance as a whole was organized and, through informative diagrams and accessible analyses, brings the theater of Greek tragedy to life.‎

‎THE TRAGEDIES OF ENNIUS The Fragments. Edited with an Introduction and Commentary‎

‎Notes in ink and pencil by G. P. Goold (? ) to some pages. Light bumping to a couple of corners. ; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries; 482 pages; The Tragedies of Ennius were theatrical adaptations of Attic originals. None has survived; but fragments of twenty-two of them can be found in the work of other writers. Dr Jocelyn prints all the identifiable fragments, substantial extracts from the works which quote them and, where necessary, a critical apparatus. The long introduction discusses the early history of Roman public spectacles; the physical conditions of the theatre in the third and second centuries; the effect these had on the poets who had to adapt the scripts of Attic tragedies; the general character of the Latin plays thus produced; and the fate of these scripts (particularly those of Ennius) in later antiquity. The commentary is both detailed and discursive. Besides glossing and interpreting in the usual way, it considers the problems of restoring individual fragments and of using these fragments to reconstruct both the plays from which they came and the Attic originals. It also elucidates the methods used by Ennius to reproduce the effects of language and style of the classical Athenian dramatists.‎

‎PERSUASION IN GREEK TRAGEDY A Study of Peitho‎

‎Light foxing to top of textblock. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). Minor shelfwear to book. Dustjacket spine is sunned. ; One of the difficulties in appreciating the literature of a foreign culture, and even more that of an ancient one, is to be sensitive to the overtones that certain concepts held for the original audience. A distinctive feature of Greek culture was an awareness of the power of words, and an interest in the interrelationships between persuasion (peitho) , deception and violence. These issues figured with some prominence in Greek plays. Dr Buxton maintains that certain aspects of classical tragedy become clearer if we recognise what peitho meant to the Greeks. In the first part of his book, he attempts to 'excavate' the concept of peitho, uncovering its various associations in different areas of experience - politics, rhetoric, love, morality and philosophy. Armed with what he has discovered, he turns in the second part to an analysis of selected plays by Aischylos, Sophokles and Euripides in which persuasion plays a major role. ; 260 pages‎

‎THE GREEK THEATRE AND FESTIVALS Documentary Studies‎

‎Minor bumping. Light shelfwear to DJ and book. ; A collection of essays, by leading international scholars, on the history of the Greek theatre, and on the wider context of festival culture in which theatrical activity took place in the Greek world. The emphasis is on the documentary material - inscriptions, archaeological remains and monuments - which provides so much of our 'hard' evidence for the activities of the theatre. Much of the important material discussed here is unknown except to specialists, and these studies offer access to its interpretation to a wider audience. They cover a wide range of time and place, from the earliest days of the Greek theatre to the Roman period, with special emphasis on the neglected Hellenistic period, which is especially rich in documentary evidence. ; Oxford Studies In Ancient Documents; 8.6 X 5.7 X 1.2 inches; 400 pages‎
