L'opera è un autorevole e stimato repertorio dalle origini della musica sino al novecento. I volumi appartengono purtroppo a edizioni diverse e sono stati raccolti dal collezionista che li possedeva che ci ha lasciato anche un manoscritto con commento all'opera nella prima pagina di sguardia del primo tomo. Il primo tomo del 1950 descrive la musica nelle civiltà preromane, a Roma antica, nel Medioevo e nel Rinascimento. Il secondo tomo del 1950 descrive la musica nel seicento: il Teatro (melodramma) la musica sacra la vocale da camera e strumentale. Il terzo tomo del 1946 descrive la musica nel settecento: il teatro (opera seria e buffa nel settecento), voci e strumenti della musica classica (il sentimento religioso, letteratura degli strumenti da tasto, violinisti compositori, musica polistrumentale). Il quarto tomo del 1945 descrive la musica nell'ottocento: la scena (melodramma degli italiani, opera francese, opera tedesca, opera russa) la musica da camenra, sinfonica e chiesastica (romantici europei, canzone romantica, polifonia in Chiesa e in sala). The first tome of 1950 describes music in preromans civilizations, in ancient Rome, in Middle Age and in Rinascimento. The second tome of 1950 describes music in 1600: the Theatre (melodramma). The third tome of 1946 describes music in 1700. The fourth tome of 1945 describes music in 1800. The fifth tome in 1949 describes music in 1900.
