The edges of the letter are very lightly creased with a tiny chip & a paper-clip mark to the top edge. Folded twice for mailing. Very good. <p>Brown writes to Madeleine Sherwood the widow of playwright Robert E. Sherwood. The date the letter was answered is noted in ink below the address. Jared A. Brown is writing a biography of the famous acting couple Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne and seeks permission from Mrs. Sherwood to quote from letters to the Lunts from herself and Robert Sherwood. He also asks if he may quote from Robert Sherwood's letters to others about the Lunts' activities which appear in a book by John Mason Brown. A poster 11"x14" announcing "The San Francisco Renaissance: A Counterculture History of the 50's & '60's " a two-part event held during January 25-27 1985 at the Victoria Theatre in San Francisco. One part was entitled "West Coast Beat & Beyond: A Tribute to Jack Kerouac" & included a video featuring Gregory Corso Lawrence Ferlinghetti Allen Ginsberg Bob Kaufman Kerouac Ken Kesey Joanne Kyger Philip Lamantia Peter Orlovsky & other primary figures of the Beat Generation; as well as a reading by acclaimed Kerouac biographer Gerald Nicosia from his then-recently released "Memory Babe: A Critical Biography of Jack Kerouac." The other part was entitled "The San Francisco Oracle Slide Show" & was devoted to the named legendary underground journal. Wonderfully illustrated with a saxophone forming the stem of "K" in "Kerouac sunflowers at lower margins reproduction of a vintage photograph of Kerouac etc. We're of course delighted that the very words of our own motto are here: "Beat & Beyond"! A superb relic in tribute to the Beat Generation & the 60's-era counterculture that followed in its immediate wake from the city that was their zenith.
