Three colour woodblock prints a triptych panels loose each 24 x 35.4cm Japanese text in red identifying the actors and in yellow identifying the roles in the upper left of two panels and program title in the top right of the third panel further text within in a red fish-shape in the lower right of the third panel some offsetting of red ink on the first panel but not affecting the main image slivers of affixing tape to the verso of each print some surface wear and abrasion mainly to the verso but the three images in very good bright condition. Dramatic depiction of the famous Kabuki actors Onoe Kikugorō V 1844-1903 as Yosaburô and Onoe Matsusuke IV 1843-1928 playing the role of Kômori Yasu in the 1892 staging of "Yowa Nasake Ukina no Yokogushi" commonly called "Kirare Yosa". <br> <br>Images such as these were collected by Kabuki fans of the day who bought woodblocks of their favourite actors and then had the prints made up into albums so that they could be enjoyed much in the way poster books and other fan memorabilia of famous movie stars is enjoyed today. <br> <br>The artist Toyohara Kunichika 1835-1900 was acclaimed as one of "The Three Greats of Meiji Ukiyo-e". Many stories surround him including his boast that he had moved 100 times which appears unlikely but this claim combined with his hard drinking womanising lifestyle and overall "live for the day" attitude all contributed to his colourful reputation. <p>New York Friday May 21. . Fine. - Over 120 words penned on both sides of her 4 inch high by 6 inch wide personal embossed card stock. Isabelle Stevenson is sorry she didn't see Jean Dalrymple before she left on her trip "It sounds wonderful - hope it is and was!" She goes on to mention that Jean has "no doubt" heard about events at the "Wing" and the resignation of a member "Economics and circumstances dictate we do not at this time replace him - the consensus is 'find a young man or woman willing to work hard' --- The Wing office will be closed from June 1st for 2 weeks." She goes on to say that "I feel 'lonely' not having seen you before you took off." Signed "Isabelle". Fine.</p><p>Isabelle Stevenson 1913-2003 was president and chairman of the board of the American Theatre Wing which partners with the Tony Awards in promoting and supporting theatre arts. As an actress Stevenson had her debut in the annual musical extravanza which were "Earl Carroll's Vanities" and toured as a dancer including an appearance at the London Palladium before Queen Elizabeth. She studied journalism at New York University as well as fashion and costume design and supervised publication of books at Greystone Publishing. She co-chaired New York City Board of Education's All-Day Neighborhood Schools and served on the board of directors of The Museum of the City of New York and of the New Dramatists Inc. The Isabelle Stevenson Award given out during the Tony Awards ceremonies was named in her honor.</p><p>The recipient Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jos Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member producer and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.</p> New York, Friday, May 21.

Katonah N.Y.: The Katonah Gallery 1989. First. Paperback. Very Good. Aronson Boris. A small book—only 24 unpaginated pages—serving as the catalog for a small yet important exhibition. Boris Aronson started designing theater sets revolutionary Russia and then Germany working in the new Constructivist style before moving to New York in 1923. He started out in the more adventurous Jewish theaters of the city’s Lower East Side but by 1932 he was working on Broadway. By the end of his life in 1980 he had won six Tony Awards for scenic design had designed sets for not only major theater productions of such plays as “The Crucible†“The Diary of Anne Frank†“Cabaret†and “Fiddler on the Roof†but he had become great friends with the painter Marc Chagall whose work inspired some of his designs and worked closely with composer Kurt Weill director Harold Prince and dancer/choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov. New York Times theater critic Frank Rich not only served as curator for this exhibition he also thought Aronson so important that he co-wrote a biography of him two years before this exhibition of his drawings paintings photographs and models with Aronson’s widow Lisa Jalowetz Aronson. An extended piece by Rich about Aronson also starts off this catalog.<br /> <br /> Fourteen images of designs appear in this catalog in addition to the design on the cover; eleven of them are in full color and twelve of them are full page. Although this book is new it does show signs of shelf wear on the front cover particularly at the spine. There some cosmetic damage to the upper right corner of the cover and faint smudging upper corners of several other pages. However there is no damage to the images themselves—they are prinstine. The programme includes 'Poor Gentleman' a celebrated comedy followed by a 'Comic Song by Mr Weston'' dancing by Miss Smith and a laughable farce of the 'Spoil'd Child'. Print remains bold and crisp. A small nick to tail and a very small hole and 1 cm clean tear to bottom left fore edge; neither compromising the text. A very appealing little piece of ephemera. Measures 19 m x 12 cm. Charles Boucher is further described here as the winner of the first prize at the St. Louis Opera and also the first prize at the Lille Conservatory. We could locate no historical information on him. Hardcover. Good. Unusual 1920s -30s SCRAPBOOK devoted to Thelma Carlton an actor and dancer who amongst other things executed one helluva hula. Fourteen black leaves 20 cm x 14 cm tied with ribbon -- a bit chipped along the edges covers absent last page coming loose. Each page is covered recto and verso with newspaper clippings images and ads devoted to Thelma Carlton. Many items are underlined to emphasize the parts specific to Carlton and there is a small photograph of her name in lights over the Club Orlando which leads one to wonder if the scrapbook belonged to a loved one of Carlton's Carlton herself or a really devoted fan. Carlton got her start with a traveling Shakespeare company and within a decade became a star of burlesque and a featured dancer at the Palais Royal in New York as well as other hits both on an off Broadway -- including "Frivolities" 44th Street Theater 1920 Nora Bayes' "Her Family Tree" Schubert Theater 1921 and "Artists and Models" Winter Garden Theater 1925. The reviews collected here invariably remark on her skill versatility and loveliness -- and few can refrain from commenting on her "ravishing" hula and other exotic numbers. While the scrapbook was not created by the tidiest of hands as the crooked cuts and occasional splotches of glue will attest it's a compelling tribute with wonderful images of costumes of the era. <br/><br/> hardcover

Japan. Meiji 35 1902. Striking black and white woodblock theatre poster depicting 18 dramatic scenes accompanied by a list of actors. Folded a few closed tears repaired on the reverse with archival washi red chop on reverse causing a little show-through at lower right. Overall very good. 45.5 x 71cm. Attractive black and white 1902 theatre poster advertising two performances on the 1 January 1902 of the Yamaguchi Theatre Group . The matinee performance starting at 9am was a patriotic play of five acts titled "Flag Fluttering Wind of Japan". The evening performance comprising six acts began at 5pm and appears to feature various kabuki plays under the title "Actors' Temperaments". <br> <br>The Yamaguchi Theatre Group was a part of the Shinpa 新派Theatre movement which incorporated both modern and traditional theatrical themes during Meiji period. This style and theme remains popular up till present day. Interestingly in this theatre group actors were all male playing both male and female roles. . unknown

In two fourteen-line stanzas. Chorus: 'Dreams dreams all dreams Sorrow is real and all else seems'. Containing several minor emendations. Begins: 'Sitting alone - musing alone With a click of coral in the dull red glow Only heard with the low deep moan Of the wintry wind o'er a waste of snow'. Charles Kean Shakespearian actor. Autograph Letter Signed asking Charles Lamb Kenney to report on the ‘parting words’ he proposes to give on his ‘intended retirement from management’ after the first performance of the new season.
‘30 August 1858 / 7 Upper Hyde Park St. / Hyde Park Squre’. See his entry and those of his father wife and Kenney in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. On first leaf of a bifolium the blank second leaf of which carries a thin strip of tape from the mount. In good condition lightly aged. Folded twice. Good bold signature ‘C. Kean’. Begins: ‘My dear Kenney / Would you like a Private. Box or stalls next Friday being the opening night of our season - I should like you to give a kind of notice of my past season and of my intended retirement from management next July to which I shall refer in the parting words I purpose delivering according to the custom’. ‘So much for vaccination!’: Charles Mathews celebrated actor-manager. Autograph Letter Signed to ‘Harley’ distinguished actor indignant at a doctor after his son the actor Charles James Mathews’ attack of small pox following inoculation.
‘Ivy Cottage Kentish Town / Novr 25 - /28 1828’. See his entry and that of his son in the Oxford DNB. The topic of this letter is referred to in the second volume of Dickens's edition of the son's life 1879. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged with strip of tape from mount adhering at edge of blank second leaf and two folds for postage. Addressed to ‘Dear Harley’ and signed ‘C Mathews.’ He begins by thanking him for his ‘kind enquiries’ and with regard to his son the actor Charles James Mathews writes that ‘Our dear good Charles thank God! is recovered and writes in excellent spirits from Florence. His disorder has been small pox! So much for vaccination! for of all the victims I have ever witnessed to that system he was the greatest - as his face was covered with frightful blotches for two years after inoculation.’ He claims that the ‘English Physician’ who attended the boy ‘hand no hesitation from the first in pronouncing it to be Small Pox’ but that ‘this was concealed from us’. ‘He accounts rationally for 3 weeks of silence - namely that he was blind. “The first reason will do.â€â€™ He has had ‘irksome work to play comforter to an almost broken hearted mother - and six nights per week to mimic gladness when the heart was sad’. ‘Theatre. Royal Dublin / 23rd Apl 1844’. 2pp 12mo. On first leaf of grey-paper bifolium the blank second leaf carrying a thin strip of tape from the mount. In good condition folded once. Signed ‘John W. Calcraft’. The recipient is not named. Thirty-four lines of text in a somewhat difficult hand. After a reference to ‘Mrs. Cook’s letter’ he gives the details of a forthcoming production including the dates ending with the benefit. ‘Terms as understood 10£ per night & halfbenefit. I do not usually play on the Friday Night at this time of the year as they are uniformly bad nights’. He explains that he often finds ‘single extra nights’ more productive. Asks ‘Pray let me have your Books of your pieces as soon as possible & also any parts you may have by you’. Concludes: ‘I think every thing is perfectly understood.’ ‘T[heatre]. ODA OTOYA COLLECTION OF STAGE DESIGNS
JAPANESE THEATRE. ODA OTOYA: A COLLECTION OF STAGE DESIGNS. Oda Otoya 1920-2006 began his career in the arts as an illustrator of fiction moving to stage design in the post-war period. He created designs for many plays at the National Theatre in Tokyo as well as the famous Little Theatre there. He published an important book on his own work in 1977: BUTAI BIJUTSU WO KANGEARU THOUGHTS ON STAGE DESIGN. Receiving a special Kikuta Kazuo Theatre Prize in 1977 and then the coveted Shijushô Purple Ribbon Decoration in 1983 for his advancement of the Japanese theatre arts he was regarded as one of the grand old men of the Japanese theatre. Besides his extensive work in Kabuki he also designed the sets of many modern theatre productions including plays by Mishima Tanizaki etc. This collection consists of literally thousands of his original designs and design ideas for the stage.<br /> <br /> There are:<br /> <br /> 2311 oblong sheets most are around 7 x 21 inches showing proscenium views stage backgrounds pieces of scenery scrims etc. Some are preliminary sketches with touches of color but the majority. over 2000 are highly finished watercolor designs that show either an entire scenic design on one sheet or component pieces of a single scenic design on two or more sheets that form the whole or even a large prop such as a boat. A handful of designs have small photos attached to them that either indicate the inspiration for the design suggest a view to be seen outside a stage window and in one instance show the set as realized with actors.<br /> <br /> 46 smaller various sizes preliminary and final sketches either colored or with touches of color that show scenic designs details of specific elements of designs props decorative motifs etc.<br /> <br /> 456 drawings some sketches while others are quite detailed and include measurements along with photocopies of drawings and painted designs many of which are marked with notations or with areas of color.<br /> <br /> 363 stage plans various sizes that show the placement of the component elements of the rendered designs.<br /> <br /> 29 watercolors of kimono designs 15 x 10 inches and 3 sheets of costume designs.<br /> <br /> An important archive documenting Japanese theatre design in creative context. unknown
