‎Fields, W. C.‎

‎FIELDS FOR PRESIDENT. Introduction and Commentary (and Photograph Selection) by Michael M. Taylor.‎

‎pp. xxiii, 163. Illustrated with photos from Field's movies, state acts, and vaudeville routines. Fist issued in 1940, a presidential year, and Fields at the height of his popularity. The incumbent, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, had very little to worry about from Fields the candidate. But Fields certainly offered a few nuggets of political wisdom in his book for the public to chew on. For example, he poked fun at one of FDR's major policies with this statement: "I shall, my fellow citizens, offer no such empty panaceas as a New Deal, or an Old Deal, or even a Re-Deal. No, my friends, the reliable old False Shuffle was good enough for my father and it's good enough for me." The book's chapters closely followed the typical issues that the on-screen Fields delighted in: 'My Views on Marriage'; 'How to Beat the Federal Income Tax - and What to See and Do at Alcatraz'; 'My Rules of Etiquette'; 'The Care of Babies'; 'How I have Built Myself into a Physical Marvel'; 'How to Suceed in Business'; Etc. An example from 'The Care of Babies': "I always carried a number of sterilized blindfolds, which I would casually place over a baby's eyes before I kissed it. This prevented its growth from being stunted through terror." The photos in this edition are quite remarkable. First photo illustrated edition. HUMOR 8‎

‎Murphy, Arthur.‎

‎ALL IN THE WRONG, A COMEDY. As it is Acted at the Theatre-Royal in Drury-Lane. By Mr. Murphy.‎

‎pp. (1) [Title page], (1) ["Advertisement"], (1) ["Dramatis Personae" - a list of the 7 male actors and the 6 women actors, and the roles they play], 106, (2) [Advertisement by the publisher/printer Paul Vaillant offering for sale 24 plays, including four by David Garrick]. 8vo. 5.25 x 8". Some page repairs. Disbound. Arthur Murphy (1727-1805), Irish actor and dramatist, first became an actor in 1754, playing many important roles. He then wrote and produced a series of farces (which were almost all adaptations from the French) that were very successful, securing for their author both fame and wealth. Murphy edited a political periodical, called the Test, in support of Henry Fox, by whose influence he was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn, although he had been refused at the Middle Temple in 1757 on account of his connection with the stage. Murphy also wrote a biography of Fielding, an essay on the life and genius of Samuel Johnson and translations of Sallust and Tacitus. FIRST EDITION. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W140‎

‎(Hook, Theodore Edward) [1788-1841].‎

‎SAYINGS AND DOINGS. A Series Of Sketches From Life. In Two Volumes.‎

‎Two Volumes bound in one: pp. 323; 347. Engraved bookplate of Macaulay. 12mo. 185 mm. Later 19th century binding. Leather spine over marbled covered boards. Spine decorated and lettered in gold gilt, worn and repaired. Hardbound. Good. Hook was an English man of letters and composer, and briefly a civil servant in Mauritius. He is best known for his practical jokes, particularly the Berners Street hoax in 1810. The world's first postcard was received by Hook in 1840, which he probably posted to himself. While he was confined in a debtors sponging-house from (1823-1825), he wrote the nine volumes of stories afterwards collected under the title of Sayings and Doings. After various successes Hook returned to his old habits and a prolonged attempt to combine industry and dissipation resulted in the confession that he was done up in purse, in mind and in body. His estate was seized by the Treasury. He never married but lived with Mary Anne Doughty and they had six children. Hook was one of the most brilliant figures of Georgian times. He inspired the characters of Lucian Gay in Benjamin Disraeli's novel Coningsby and Mr Wagg in Thackeray's Vanity Fair. Coleridge praised him as being 'as true a genius as Dante'.
