Notice by Sainte Beuve. Contemporary half emerald green shagreen binding signed P. Pralon à Dijon at top of first endpaper. Smooth spine decorated with mirrored tooling connected by series of fillets. Boards covered with glazed green paper with relief motifs. Spine uniformly sunned. Traces of rubbing. Some rare and light foxing but overall paper quite white which is very rare for this edition which is most often found foxed and browned; however some signatures tinted. Provenance: visiting card inserted in first volume: Vicomte de la Tour. One of the finest books illustrated by Johannot with Don Quixote and one of the gems of Romantic illustration. Some of the plays that appear in this volume are Le Medecin Volant Depit Amoureux and Les Facheux. Each volume has the following format: red & green general t.p. with central ill. in red of a Moliere female character different for each vol.small black engraving & epigraph verso next leafhalf-titlef/p on verso as t.p.image but in blackvolume t.p. with central image in black different for each vol.repeat half-titlemain text with head and tailpieces and intermittent engr.ills usually one or two per play occ.more or fewer blue central motif to verso final leaf as on epigraph page with printer's imprint orange endpapers & pastedowns. Top edges gilt others uncut. All covers in blue-green cloth with gilt flower motif top front outer corner spine titles all rather dull. Internally all vols. seem to be clean tight & unmarked covers clean with only slight spine end rubbing to some vols. Ills all but Louis-Edouard Fournier though small motif at end signed 'Nelumbo'. There may be possible minor variations to this format but I have not spotted any. Usually 3-4 plays per vol. Uncommon in this condition.
