MOLIERE pseud. for Jean Baptiste POQUELIN 1622 1673.
The Dramatic Works of Moliere. Rendered into English by Henri Van Laun. With a Prefatory Memoir Introductory Notices Appendices and Notes. 6 volumes.
Edinburgh:: William Paterson 1875-1876. 1875. 6 volumes. Tall Royal 8vo. 6 frontispieces including a portrait of Moliere and scenes from his plays 34 engraved plates on India paper. The portrait is an etching by the French artist Adolphe Lalauze 1834-1906 after Nolin. The other illustrations are original compositions by Lalauze. Later half burgundy gilt-stamped morocco cherry cloth raised bands top edges gilt; spine ends on volume I mended with kozo. Rubber-stamp of Paul D. Bremer St. Paul Minnesota. Very good. A lovely set translated Henri Van Laun 1820-1896 one of the eminent scholars of French literature of his time. This highly admired and heavily annotated edition is generally considered Van Laun's Magnum Opus. Sotheran quoting the Athenaeum wrote that this is "not only the best translation of Moliere in existence but the best to be hoped." – Sotheran's Price Current of Literature CCXI Jan. 1882. / "Van Laun's translation of the 'Dramatic Works' of Moliere was published in 6 vols. at Edinburgh in 1875–6 8vo with illustrations by Lalauze. It embodies much curious information derived from Langbaine and other sources concerning seventeenth and eighteenth century translations of and plagiarisms from separate plays acknowledged or unacknowledged." – DNB XX p. 132. "While at the Edinburgh Academy he made the friendship of Professor Blackie Lord Neaves Sir Alexander Grant Mr. Edmondstone and many other intellectual celebrities with the result that he was stimulated to undertake his great work the translation of Moliere. He brought to his task a knowledge of French and English idiom such as few men possess a cultivated critical taste and a vast store of scholarly erudition." – Van Laun's obituary in The Times. Les Films Moliere
LE CAMION THE LORRY 1977
No binding. Fine. Photo Vintage original 5 x 7"" 13 x 18 cm. photo France. Gérard Depardieu Marguerite Duras actor writer-director; Les Films Moliere. Writer-director Duras was a major name in mid-century French literature one of the creators of the Nouveau Roman New Novel and a great experimental voice in film and literature. She also wrote many screenplays beginning with HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR 1959. She began directing in 1967 with an output of 19 films over two decades. ""Her themes are memory loss and the interplay of reality and fictional perception. Her own films make great play with words and with words that are more than normally separated from their images."" Thompson p. 265. Photo of Duras and Depardieu. ""In this most talky and personal of films director Marguerite Duras and actor Gérard Depardieu do an on-camera read-through of a movie script. Occasionally the director comments about the characters or their motivations and sometimes the actor does. That's all -- there is no action there are no location shots no one pretends to be anything else. The script itself tells about an encounter between a blank-slate of a woman hitchhiker and a communist truck driver. As the reading progresses Duras comments bitterly about the failed ideals of communism and the glorious revolution that will probably never happen."" IMDb FINE. unknown books

Comedy-ballet without the music by Lully a contemporary date on title page in ink notes the first performance as Mar 22 1665. Bound by Trautz-Bauzonnet in red morocco gilt rules. A very handsome copy. Slipcase. <br /><br />Love-sick Lucinde feigns illness. Her father Sganarelle brings in one doctor after another but he rejects their cures. Finally Lucinde's beloved Clitandre masquerading as a doctor suggests that marriage is the cure for this kind of love-sickness but Sganarelle wants to keep Lucinde and her dowry for himself. The miserly father is tricked into signing a marriage contract between the two lovers which he thinks is a only a placebo to raise her spirits. <br /><br />Commissioned by the King for a royal entertainment at Versailles and first performed on September 15 1664 l'Amour Medecin is a comedy ballet with music by Lully in three acts. With ballet entries interspresed through the action entre-actes are described in the text. In his Preface MoliÄre cautions that one should not judge the play without seeing it. He also writes that he wrote the ballet in only five days and apologizes that it is only a sketch. He praises Lully's music. <br /><br />The comedy ballet form was in part created by Moliere himself along with the ballet teacher and theorist Pierre Beauchamps. For this form the ballet entries themselves had a dramatic structure in contrast to the early ballets du cour where the entries were metaphorical not dramatic. Moliere believed that ballets were comedies without words. In the case of this ballet comedy music and dance are the greatest doctors.<br /><br />The plot of the play in which a number of quack doctors attempt to cure a love-sick patient is probably based on Charles Sorel's novel Palais d'Angelie 1622. The play is now chiefly remembered for its devastating satire on physicians and has often been referred to as Les Médecins. The enduring play was produced three times in 1665 at Versailles 27 times in Paris and from 1680 when the Comedie Francaise was established 274 times until 1900.<br /><br />References: Guibert A.J.
