‎Contested Identities : Gender and Kinship in Modern Greece‎

‎In this collection leading anthropologists provide a comprehensive yet highly nuanced view of what it means to be a Greek man or woman, married or unmarried, functioning within a complex society based on kinship ties. Exploring the ways in which sexual identity is constructed, these authors discuss, for example, how going out for coffee embodies dominant ideas about female sexuality, moral virtue, and autonomy; why men in a Lesbos village maintain elaborate friendships with nonfamily members while the women do not; why young housewives often participate in conflict-resolution rituals; and how the dominant role of mature married householders is challenged by unmarried persons who emphasize spontaneity and personal autonomy. This collection demonstrates that kinship and gender identities in Greece are not unitary and fixed: kinship is organized in several highly specific forms, and gender identities are plural, competing, antagonistic, and are continually being redefined by contexts and social change. Contents: Part One : Gender and kinship in marries life Part Two ; Gender, Kinship and Religion: 'Reconstructing' the Anthropology of Greece by Jill Dubisch; Cosmos and Gender in Village Greece by Juliet du Boulay; Silence, Submission and subversion: Towards a Poetics of Womenhood by Michael Herzfeld; The Resolution of a Conflict through song in Greek Ritual Therapy by Loring Danforth; The Limits of K inship by Roger Just. PART TWO GENDER AND KINSHIP OUTSIDE MARRIAGE: Sisters in Christ: Metaphors of kinship among Greek nuns by A Marina Iossafides; Friends of the Heart: Male Commensal Solidarity, Ge nder and kinship in Aegean Greece by Evthymios Papataxiarchis: Going out for Coffee? Contesting the Grounds of Gendered Pleasures in evryday Sociability by Jane Cowan; Hunters and Hunted: Kamaki and t he ambiguities of sexual Predation in a Grek Town by Sofka Zinovieff; Gender, Sexuality and the Person in Greek Culture by Peter Loizos and Evthymios Papataxiarchis.259p. plates. bibliography.index Book‎

‎BARBARIANS IN GREEK COMEDY‎

‎Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers. Pocket has been removed from ffep causing some damage. Else VG. ; Greeks divided the world into Greece vs. The land of foreigners, into Hellenes vs. Barbarians, seeing their country as a bastion of culture, learning, and military might surrounded by a sea of the uncivilized. Long shows how comedy expressed the Greek feeling of superiority over the barbarians, how it dealt with the so-called barbarian-Hellene antithesis. The result is a contribution to the study of ancient Greek comedy—both the comedy itself and the beliefs, the prejudices, the limitations, and the variety in the society from which the plays emerged. The comedians’ responses to the barbarians ranged from idealization to neutrality to raw racism. Although contemptuous of barbarians, the Hellenes could not keep elements of foreign culture from entering their own. Long’s major contention is that the Greek reaction to Oriental and other foreign influence can be seen in the treatment of barbarians in Greek comedy. ; 240 pages‎

‎LONGIN ; [ PSEUDO-LONGIN ] ; [ BODONI, Giambattista ]‎

The present copy is a specimen from Giambattista Bodoni at the peak of his career, his celebrated Horace and Virgil having been published in 1791 and 1793 respectively. This is one of the rare complete copies, with Bodoni's preface to Pope Pius VI, a preface often missing because it was removed from copies due to its offensive remarks against the French who had just invaded Italy. This copy in quarto format (different collation from the folio version published by Bodoni on the same date) with text in greek and in latin, is followed by the text of the French translation by Boileau, taken from an unidentified edition of his complete works. Copy of good provenance: from the library of Alidor Delzant (1848-1905), who was secretary and executor of the will of the Goncourt brothers and of the great critic and writer Paul de Saint-Victor. Good condition (slightly rubbed boards, small discreet slot in one joint in upper cap, very good condition otherwise, 2 ex-libris on guard including the beautiful ex-libris of Alidor Delzant engraved by Loviot).
