‎Greek painters of Istanbul.= Istanbullu Rum ressamlar.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (32 x 24 cm). Ills. In Turkish and English. 384 p. It is generally recognized that Greek painters from Istanbul contributed to a great extent to Ottoman and Turkish culture, beginning during the Byzantine era. Even after the end of the Byzantine era, however, Greek artists continued to play an active role in the development of art in Istanbul. Undeniably, one of the results of the Greeks having had to leave Turkey for political reasons has been the removal of an important treasure of art and culture from Istanbul. The beauty and splendor of Istanbul and the recurrent themes of migration and longing, are characteristic of the works of numerous Greek artists who left Istanbul at an early age and who developed or continued their artistic work in Greece or in various European countries. This book contains the biographies and more than five hundred works of nearly two hundred Greek artists of Istanbul.‎

Louvaris Fast and Abstinence in Byzantium; Australian Association for Byzantine Studies. Byzantina Australiensia 15; 216 pages; In recent decades there has been an increasing interest in the study of food and drink in the ancient, Mediaeval and Byzantine worlds and of their supply and consumption. This volume presents selected papers from the biennial conference of the Australian Association for Byzantine Studies, which was held at the University of Adelaide, 11-12 July 2003. The theme was food and drink in Byzantium. Published selectively in the present volume, the papers of the conference are augmented by contributions from international scholars. While some papers address the use of food directly (children's diet, fasting) or tangentially (in love spells) , or discuss philosophical approaches towards food (vegetarianism) , other papers in this volume examine the topic from another perspective: the role and perception of food and drink - and their consumption - in society. Yet others examine issues of supply (military logistics) and the role it played in shaping Byzantium. This volume will appeal to readers interested in the history of food, in late antique and Byzantine society, in Byzantine rhetoric, in magic in late antiquity and in the Jews in early Byzantium.‎

‎THE POISON KING The Life and Legend of Mithradates, Rome's Deadliest Enemy‎

‎The Poison King describes a life brimming with spectacle and excitement. Claiming Alexander the Great and Darius of Persia as ancestors, Mithradates inherited a wealthy Black Sea kingdom at age fourteen after his mother poisoned his father. He fled into exile and returned in triumph to become a ruler of superb intelligence and fierce ambition. Hailed as a savior by his followers and feared as a second Hannibal by his enemies, he envisioned a grand Eastern empire to rival Rome. After massacring eighty thousand Roman citizens in 88 BC, he seized Greece and modern-day Turkey. Fighting some of the most spectacular battles in ancient history, he dragged Rome into a long round of wars and threatened to invade Italy itself. His uncanny ability to elude capture and surge back after devastating losses unnerved the Romans, while his mastery of poisons allowed him to foil assassination attempts and eliminate rivals. ; 448 pages‎

Additis in fine collectaneis quibusdam & indicibus sane quam necessariis‎

Brunet III, 1561. - - VENTE PAR CORRESPONDANCE UNIQUEMENT‎

‎SLAVES, MASTERS, AND THE ART OF AUTHORITY IN PLAUTINE COMEDY‎

‎Scholars' bookplate to inner cover. Very light bumping to corners. DJ has light creasing and shelf wear. ; What pleasures did Plautus' heroic tricksters provide their original audience? How should we understand the compelling mix of rebellion and social conservatism that Plautus offers? Through a close reading of four plays representing the full range of his work (Menaechmi, Casina, Persa, and Captivi) , Kathleen McCarthy develops an innovative model of Plautine comedy and its social effects. She concentrates on how the plays are shaped by the interaction of two comic modes: the socially conservative mode of naturalism and the potentially subversive mode of farce. It is precisely this balance of the naturalistic and the farcical that allows everyone in the audience--especially those well placed in the social hierarchy--to identify both with and against the rebel, to feel both the thrill of being a clever underdog and the complacency of being a securely ensconced authority figure. ; 240 pages‎
