MENSCH - HEROS - GOTT Weltentwürfe Und Lebensmodelle Im Mythos Der Vormoderne
183 pages; The constructive and critical-reflexive potential of myth in its varied literary and everyday contexts is the focus of this volume. Taking a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary approach, the contributions study universal concepts and life models in pre-modern myths from a variety of angles. They focus on humans, heroes and gods as the protagonists of myths, mythopoietics, and the constant actualization, instrumentalization, transformation and presentation of mythical themes in vase painting, architecture and literature. ODYSSEUS A Life
Book is fine. DJ is creased. ; Everyone knows something about Odysseus: how he defeated the Trojans in a surprise attack with a massive wooden horse, wandered the Mediterranean seas for years trying to get home, confronted the Cyclops, and killed the suitors of his faithful wife Penelope back at his Ithaca palace. Odysseus turns up everywhere: Homer's epics The Iliad and The Odyssey, Tennyson's poem 'Ulysses' (the Roman name for Odysseus) , Constantine Cavafy's Ithaca, and more. Even the Coen brothers based a film, O Brother Where Art Thou, on his voyage. But no one has chronicled Odysseus' life from start to finish -- until now. In this entertaining 'biography,' Charles Beye fills out the story of this extraordinary figure, at the same time portraying Odysseus' evolution through the course of a strange and adventuresome life, at times so remote, at times so immediate in the contemporary perspective.; 8.6 X 5.9 X 0.8 inches; 224 pages

Bible Greek New Teastament; Alford Henry.
THE GREEK TESTAMENT: With a Critically Revised Text: A Digest of Various Readings: Marginal References To Verbal and Idiomatic Usage: Prolegomena: And a Critical and Exegetical Commentary. For the Use of Theological Students and Ministers. In Four Volumes
Lee and Shepard Boston; Lee Shepard and Dillingham New York: 1873. 1873 Four Volumes. Text in English and Greek. All edges marbled. 225mm. Original full leather bindings rubbed and worn. Original morocco spine labels. Sixth edition. Hardbound. Very good. Henry Alford 1810-1871 was an English churchman Dean of Canterbury theologian textual critic scholar poet hymnodist and writer. "His chief fame rests on this monumental edition of the New Testament in Greek which occupied him from 1841 to 1861. In this work he first produced a careful collation of the readings of the chief manuscripts and the researches of the ripest continental scholarship of his day. Philological rather than theological in character it marked an epochal change from the old homiletic commentary and though more recent research patristic and papyral has largely changed the method of New Testament exegesis Alford's work is still a quarry where the student can dig with a good deal of profit." - Wiki. THΣ KAINHΣ ΔΙΑΘΗΚΗΣ ΑΠΑÎΤΑ. Novum Jesu Christi Domini Nostri Testamentum. Ex Regiis aliisque optimis editionibus cum cura expressum.
Sedan Ex Typographia & Typis Novissimis Joannis Jannoni 1628 colophon dated 1629. 32mo in eights 80 x 45 mm. Early 19th-century full crushed morocco by J. Levett of Cambridge bookseller's label inside front cover ornamented in gilt inner dentelles gilt all edges gilt functioning silver clasps; pp. 571 1 colophon; only slightest rubbing to extremities light offseting from pins of clasps to initial and final leaves a few minute wormholes not easy to detect very light toning; a very good copy of a great rarity neat ownership inscription from the date of binding to head of title. 'The smallest Greek Testament ever printed with the exception of Pickering's miniature edition of 1828' Darlow and Moule in a handsome nineteenth century Cambridge sombre binding. Jean Jannon's astonishing book production with a minute Greek type cut by him recently 'typis novissimis' is textually based of the Elzevier edition of 1624. Jannon had used this Greek type only once before in his 1627 works of Horace. Printed in the independent up to 1651 Protestant Principality of Sedan in the Ardennes close to the modern French border with Belgium this NT is a rather sensational achievement of French typography and Protestant book production. In 1610 the Parisian master printer Robert III Estienne recommended the printer librarian and typecutter Jean Jannon to the Prince of Sedan as a talented and Protestant man of the book. Sedan developed into an academy of Protestant erudition with an impressive collection of printed books manustcripts and works of art. Jeannon began to print academic theses classics and religious works whilst designing and cutting types in Latin Greek Hebrew and Syriac. The type used here the Greek version of la petite sedanoise as it became known later after it had been pirated by a Parisian typecutter was the smallest type created since the invention of printing. It measures a mere 4.9 points. Jannon reserved this particular type solely for his own use and did not sell it to other printers as he did with other types of his design. The French government seized Jannon's printshop in 1641 and the Imprimérie Royale used this particularly small type which was later mis-attributed to Garamond. Darlow and Moule 4676. Ramsden p.109. unknown

The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England. 8 1279 1; 186 2 pp. plus terminal blank. 1 vols. 4to signed in 8's 195 x 143mm. The Uncommon Quarto Printing. The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England with the Scholia the scarce printing in quarto format. The text is derived from the Sixtine text and edited by John Biddle 1615-1662 the Unitarian controversialist who was imprisoned by the Parliamentary Commissioners for his religious views. <br/>The SCHOLIA . has a separate title-leaf register and pagination. The same setting was imposed in both quarto and octavo formats the latter with rules separating the columns of text. In regard to institutional representation the edition in quarto is much more uncommon than that in octavo: ESTC locates 4 copies of the quarto printing in North America as opposed to 19 of the octavo printing. Occasionally Daniel's reprint of the New Testament is bound up with the octavo printings to form a complete Bible. Brunet cites that format but notes the sale of a copy on "Gr. Pap." presumably a copy in this format. Over the last 35 years ABPC records sale of one copy in quarto 1999 and four in octavo. ESTC R12599 & R236817; Wing B2718 octavo edition only; Darlow & Moule 4692; Brunet I:863 Excudebat Rogerus Daniel: prostat autem venale apud Joannem Martin & Jacobum Allestrye, sub signo Campanae in Cometerio D. Bible - Greek New Teastament; Alford, Henry.
Four Volumes. Text in English and Greek. All edges marbled. 225mm. Original full leather bindings rubbed and worn. Original morocco spine labels. Sixth edition. Hardbound. Very good. Henry Alford (1810-1871) was an English churchman (Dean of Canterbury), theologian, textual critic, scholar, poet, hymnodist, and writer. "His chief fame rests on this monumental edition of the New Testament in Greek, which occupied him from 1841 to 1861. In this work he first produced a careful collation of the readings of the chief manuscripts and the researches of the ripest continental scholarship of his day. Philological rather than theological in character, it marked an epochal change from the old homiletic commentary, and though more recent research, patristic and papyral, has largely changed the method of New Testament exegesis, Alford's work is still a quarry where the student can dig with a good deal of profit." - Wiki. Bible - New Testament - Greek; Baskerville. 1763.
HE KAINE DIATHEKE [Greek Title] = NOVUM TESTAMENTUM : JUXTA EXEMPLAR MILLIANUM. Typis Joannis Baskerville.
pp. [4], 415, [1]. Small age and damp stains to the first and last 40 leaves or so. Wide margined. Large 4to. 300mm. All edges gold gilt. Early plain full vellum binding. Marbled endpapers. Hand lettered ownership of: J.M Hicks, Winton, September 1910. Sole quarto printing of the Greek New Testament using Baskerville type (i.e., Greek type that Baskerville designed and cut himself). The text follows the 1707 edition by John Mill (1645-1707), with seven variations. This quarto edition was limited to 500 copies, and is much scarcer than the 8vo edition issued around the same time. Gaskell - Add. 1; Darlow & Moule 4755. John Baskerville (1706-1775) was the greatest printer of his era. Born in Wolverley, Hereford - Worcester, England, he became a writing master in Birmingham. He also carried on a successful japanning (varnishing) business there. In about 1750 he began to make experiments in letter founding, and produced the wonderful series of types now named after him. His first book, the Virgil of 1757, was also the first to be printed upon wove paper (manufactured by a process that he invented). In 1758 he became printer to Cambridge University. There he designed other fonts, including his remarkable Greek type. All of his books bear the marks of fine craftsmanship and a refined sense of design.**PRICE JUST REDUCED! RARE. SAFE ADD 1
